My Take -> Week 17

Greetings, G-Force.

Brian Gutekunst is confidently walking with his chin up and his shoulders back. Dude should be really proud of what he’s accomplished in his short time as GM of the 13-time World Champion, Green Bay Packers. Gutekunst has quickly infused the talent in the roster with athletic phenoms in the prime of their careers.

As I write, I sip a 2017 New Gladys Enigma. Even with two years of age to it, it stills pours a fruit soured punch. I listen to the Bob Marley and the Wailers Burnin’ album. 10 magical hits to this vinyl. Tosh and Marley together, so powerful.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

Matt LaFleur went into Minnesota and fully out coached Mike Zimmer. Zimmer had trouble slowing the Packers down all day. And, even though the scoreboard only read 23 points, it felt much more commanding than that.

Over the last two weeks, the Packers beat the Bears to clinch a playoff berth and to eliminate the Bears. Then, they went into Minnesota to capture the NFC North crown. Matt LaFleur has swept the Bears and ‘queens in his first year as Head Coach. Powerful!

Mike Pettine pushed all of the right buttons. As the DL continued to win their battles, Pettine was able to simply rush 3 or 4 lineman. There was no need to blitz Cousins as Za’Darius and Clark were dominating the line of scrimmage.

In a match up of NFC North powerhouses, Za’Darius Smith was the best player on the field. He led the Packers in tackles. He also had 3.5 sacks. He dominated the line of scrimmage and singlehandedly destroyed the ‘queens game plan.

Kevin King with the play of the game. It felt like Minnesota was starting to gain some momentum. They had just converted a 3rd and long. They were across midfield. When King snagged the pass and started to take the ball upfield, it instantly felt as though all momentum was on the Packers side.

After quiet October and November months, Kenny Clark has dialed you his intensity. He’s been wrecking the opposition all December. He bulled his way through the Minnesota passing game. He helped to destroy their passing game with constant interior pressure. It feels like his game was ignited against the Giants when he wrapped up Barkley on the 3rd and 1 on the first possession of the game. Ever since that play, Clark was been unstoppable.

Kevin King and Jaire were dynamite tacklers. They were physical in the open field. King’s tackle on Thielen on the 3rd and short run led to a huge stop. An absolutely monstrous performance by King.

LaFleur was confusing the Minnesota all day. On the Packers second possession of the 1st Quarter, he sent Ervin in motion and flipped him the ball. Ervin slipped forward for 7 yards. LaFleur came back to this play a couple of times later with Ervin used as a decoy. Ervin drew attention as he has to be accounted for. As eyes peeled towards Ervin, Jenkins paves the way for Aaron Jones to get loose. MVS also chipped in with a great block. And, with that, Jones was off to the races. 56 yards later, the Packers were tossing a dagger into the Minnesota faithful and for the regular season, Green Bay returned to its namesake —Titletown, U.S.A.

Bakhtiari and Bulaga were trustworthy. Billy Turner continues to shine. Jenkins looks like a future Pro Bowl Guard. He frequently gobbles up multiple would-be defenders. Linsley wasn’t his normal mistake free self, but he stood up to the test and helped to manage a tough environment.

I’m so happy for Aaron Rodgers. Again, he didn’t look like the guy that we’ve known and loved since he took over the reigns in 2008. Rodgers was inaccurate. He missed his mark a number of occasions. But, he stood tall in the pocket. He didn’t hold onto the football. He played in rhythm.

Aaron Jones is an elite RB. 160 total yards. 2 TDs. He’s capable of getting loose at any time.

Kumerow, MVS and Lazard have developed into really good blocking WRs. Not only are they willing, but they’re very skilled.

Davante was clutch. Minnesota couldn’t guard him. 13 catches on 16 targets. One of those incompletions was the drop in the end zone on a poorly thrown pass that you’d love to see Adams catch, but other than that, Adams was mostly flawless. 116 yards for Adams in the NFC North Division clinching game in Minnesota.

Lazard has evolved into a legitimate threat on 3rd down.

On the 2-point conversion play call, LaFleur could sense. blood in the water. His courage paid off to give the Packers a 7-point lead.

The Packers were the more dominant team. They were the more possessed team. With more than 36 minutes of ball control, the Packers dominated the game. They had twice as many first downs via the pass as Minnesota had total first downs. The Packers were more physical and had a much better plan of attack.

Rashan Gary has amped up his force over the last month. He was really close to making game changing plays on a couple of occasions. I keep waiting for him to strip the ball from behind.

Fackrell was active. When Minnesota was attempting to dial up one last comeback effort, it was Fackrell beating Reiff around the edge to force the all-important holding penalty.

Keep chopping wood, Za’Darius! Dude is the hardest working player on the field. He’s changed the spirit of this franchise.

The Packers need Preston Smith to regain his stride. Preston has not been the impact player that he was over the course of the first 8 weeks. The Packers need the Pass rushing consistency from Preston that we watched earlier in the year. If Preston finds his form, and you combine it with the December play of Clark and Za’Darius, and you add the Fackrell/Gary rotation to the mix; suddenly, it looks like a 4-man rush that could carry the Packers to a Super run.

Lancaster and Lowry made their presence felt in the run game. Loved seeing Lowry get his hands up again to knock down the 1st Quarter pass. Lowry and Lancaster are playing with confidence.

The Packers had three brutal turnovers in the 1st half and only gave up 10 points. When the defense stepped into the field for the first time and it was 1st and goal, the tone of this game felt different. Huge kudos to the defense for rising to the occasion.

TMon had a fantastic game. He jumped the third down route to get the ball back late in the 2nd Quarter. He was a great tackler all game long.

Chandon Sullivan plays with excellent length. He brings physicality as well. He’s a solid rotational DB.

Blake Martinez is a tough dude. He’s the glue in the middle of this defense.

Have to enjoy watching all of the 2 and 3 TE sets. Soon, we will see a play that was designed to get Jace free in space. At this stage, you’d think that he’d be the least likely target. I’d anticipate that you could potentially see an explosive chunk play coming off of play action in a 3-TE set.

The Packers held the ‘queens to 139 net yards. On Monday Night Football. In Minnesota. To clinch the NFC North. That buzz is sublime!

It’s December football, baby. The Packers are 12-3. It feels like they’re gaining momentum. Soak this in. Enjoy these days.

Wouldn’t it be great if Rodgers would take a pay cut after the season, so that the Packers could afford to resign Clark, Martinez and Bulaga? Prior to the Packers converting the roster bonus into a signing bonus, Rodgers was scheduled to make more $32 million next year. I’m not sure what his cap figure is for 2020 after the bonus conversion, but I did see that the Packers created more than $11 million in cap space. If he could drop that to $25 million and if the Packers release Graham, they’d be able to free up more than $15 million. Martinez would have to come at a cap friendly deal, so the Packers could afford to pay Clark and Bulaga. In this scenario, the Packers would have Clark, Lowry, Gary, the Smith Bros., Martinez, Jaire, Amos and Savage all locked you for the next three years. That’s 9 of the key defenders on their current roster.

How pathetic has the sports scene been in Minnesota? The Star-Tribune named the Barr hit on Rodgers as one of the top 5 sports moments in Minnesota over the last decade. This only adds to the enjoyment of beating Minnesota in Minnesota to secure the NFC North crown.

For this weeks 2020 NFL Packers mock draft, I used the updated Fanspeak Draft Board. Here goes:

Round 1: Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson.
Round 2: Dylan Moses, ILB, Alabama.
Round 3: Jalen Reagor, WR, TCU.
Round 4: J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State.
Round 5: Labryan Ray, DL, Alabama.
Round 6: Jordyn Brooks, ILB, Texas Tech.
Round 6: JR Reed, S, Georgia.
Round 7: Matt Bushman, TE, BYU.
Round 7: Troy Pride, Jr., CB, ND.
Round 7: Michael Pittman, Jr., WR, USC.

This week - the Packers travel to Detroit to play the Lions. LaFleur will attempt to have his team go 6-0 in the NFC North. I went to the Lions game last weekend at Denver. The Lions didn’t give max effort. They’re banged up and lacking intensity. Injuries have taken their toll and they’re currently lacking leadership. If the Packers don’t walk into Ford Field with lackadaisical passion, they’ll win handily. But, in division games, anything can happen, so the Packers must show up ready to play with heightened desire.

The Lions are really beat up on offense. They still have Kenny Golladay and he’s sure to challenge the Packers downfield. Detroit will look to beat the Packers over the top with Golladay. Danny Amendola is still a worthy slot WR. He finds the soft spot in the defense. Surprisingly, the Lions are still playing Kerryon Johnson. Johnson is a good back, but he’s been dealing with a boatload of injuries. David Blough throws a good deep ball. He’s not ready for prime time and will give the Packers a couple of opportunities to steal the football. The Lions OL is mostly intact. Ricky Wagner and Taylor Decker are big bodied Tackles who have manned up and played through injury. Frank Ragnow is a good interior lineman. Lady Aboushi couldn’t hold up at Denver. Graham Glasgow also struggled. Look for Za’Darius to be lined up on the interior of the defense most of the game. Aboushi can’t block an inspired Za’Darius. Bo Scarborough is a worthwhile backup RB who hits the hole hard. The Lions injuries at WR, TE, and RB have decimated the depth of their talent at the skill positions.

Defensively, the Lions still have Flowers, Robinson and Harrison to disrupt the flow of the game. They’re all talented players. Darius Slay is still grinding at CB, too. Tavon Wilson is trying to step up as the leader of the defense and Tracy Walker looks to be following his lead. The Lions are really banged up at LB. the middle of the Lions defense won’t be able to slow down the Packers rushing attack. If the Packers can get Jones to the 2nd level, look for Jones to feast all day.

The Lions will try to pound the ball at the heart of the Packers defense. Blake Martinez has to step up and plug the hole. If the Packers can slow the Lions run game down early, Blough can’t beat them.

Look for Pettine to give King help over the top with Savage against Golladay. Expect Savage to snag an interception this week.

LaFleur comes out with play action. He takes a shot deep to Lazard and Rodgers is on point.

Detroit fights hard early. They keep it close for 20 minutes. But, they don’t have the stamina to keep up with this determined Packers team. The nail biting won’t last long.

The Packers OL leans on the Detroit DL and Aaron Jones gets loose in a big way.

Clark and Za’Darius create havoc.

Let’s go, Preston! Come off the edge and make a play. I’m cheering for you to destroy a 3rd down.

With Slay mostly on Adams, Rodgers looks to Graham, Lazard and G-Mo.

Look for LaFleur to get Ervin involved in the screen game or on a halfback wheel.

With Jamaal Williams unlikely to play, we might see Dexter Williams involved this week.

Rodgers tosses 2 TDs, Jones runs for 2.

The Packers bring playoff intensity to a meaningless game for the Lions. With that, the Packers earn a 1st round bye and a 13-3 record.

The last time the Packers won the Division was in 2016 and the Packers closed out the Regular Season with a win in Detroit. Once again, the Packers are the Division Champions and they’ll be closing out the season with a win in Detroit.

Packers 31.
Lions 13.

My Take -> Week 16

Greetings, G-Force.

The 2019 version of the Green Bay Packers are the most misunderstood Packers team in my life. They play within themselves. They don’t beat themselves. They find new ways to win on nearly a weekly basis. They grind for 60 minutes. They believe in the power of positivity. They have faith in one another. And, when things are close late, they don’t think they’re going to win; they know they’re going to win. You can call them ugly, I will call them misunderstood. The choice is yours.

As I write, I’m in a festive spirit. I listen to a blend of Christmas Music. I always enjoy diving into John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas War is Over” and Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime.” I sip a 2016 River North Avarice. It’s a Russian Imperial Stout that weighs in over 9%. It’s a sipper.

Here are my thoughts over the last week:

WHAT A TREAT! The Packers clinch a playoff berth and the Bears are eliminated on the same day. An early Christmas present!

I loved LaFleur’s approach. The shot call to MVS to start. The play was there. The pass was there. MVS didn’t finish. Should’ve been LaFleur 7 Bears 0, but MVS short armed the perfect pass. LaFleur was aggressive to start the 3rd. The first two drives led to an exciting brand of football. Aggressive passing game out of play-action. Tossing it to Adams off of play-action to the weak side of the field. When the Packers led 21-3 and got the ball back, I fully expected LaFleur to come back to that play, but to call a double move to Adams on the outside. I’m certain it would’ve worked. And, it’d have been a 3rd Quarter dagger. I was surprised that LaFleur tapped the breaks and went with a more ball-control, eat-the-clock approach.

Mike Pettine is starting to show the creativity that we liked for most of 2018. Pettine dominated the first 43 minutes of the game. He had great disguise. He mixed his rushes and his coverage. While the Bears young QB had a statistically positive performance, he was often confused and unable to move the sticks as he crossed midfield.

This team wins the Red Zone battle. This team wins the turnover battle. These are significant ingredients to recipe to have a winning record. This team is misunderstood.

Za’Darius Smith is the Packers best player. I love his versatility. His pressure on the Lowry pick was a game changing moment. And, how about Lowry showing high-end athleticism?

Feed me some more Jake Kumerow. Comical to see him make HaHa miss in the open field.

Davante Adams was clutch on the 4th down TD and on the dart to start the 3rd.

Once again, G-Mo showed inconsistent hands. Need to clean up that portion of his game.

Elgton Jenkins continues to dominate the line of scrimmage. Especially in short yardage situations.

Loved seeing Bakhtiari and Bulaga as the first ones to greet Aaron Jones on his long TD run. The Tackles have been anchors for this team all year.

Rodgers was throwing in rhythm to start the 3rd and not surprisingly, the results were stimulating!

THE BEARS STILL SUCK!!

Dean. Lowry.

Tyler Ervin is making Gutekunst look like a mastermind.

Fun to see Gary get home on the sack. And, then Savage had a chance for a pick. Would’ve been stellar to see Gutekunst’s two first-round picks make monster plays to prevent the Bears from scoring points. Instead, Savage was only able to knock the ball down. Still, it was fun to see the rookies step up to hold the Bears to 3 points.

Gary has looked active two weeks in a row. Let’s hope he can continue to grow into the playoffs. With Za’Darius playing more on the inside, the Packers need Gary or Fackrell to step up on the outside.

Kenny Clark was phenomenal. Three weeks in a row, he’s been a dominant figure in the center of the defense.

Blake Martinez was tough as nails.

Another top-tier performance by Jaire. I’m amazed at how physical he plays. He plays much stronger than he looks.

The Adrian Amos signing continues to pay significant dividends.

Billy Turner was fantastic against a stout Bears front.

The Packers OL completely shut down Mack.

Sing it with me: The Bears Still Suck, The Bears Still Suck, They really, really, really, really, really, really suck. Oh, the Bears Still Suck.

For my 2020 Packers Mock Draft, I used the Fanspeak Steve Big Board:

Round 1: Austin Jackson, OT, USC.
Round 2: Dylan Moses, ILB, Alabama.
Round 3: Jalen Reagor, WR, TCU.
Round 4: Adam Trautman, TE, Dayton.
Round 5: Mustafa Johnson, DL, Colorado.
Round 6: Jon Runyan, OG, Michigan.
Round 6: JR Reed, S, Georgia.
Round 7: Josh Uche, EDGE, Michigan.
Round 7: Zack Moss, RB, Utah.
Round 7: Logan Wilson, ILB, Wyoming.

This week – it’s the ‘queens in Minnesota. I’ll never understand why they willing play in a Dome. The Packers have yet to win in their new building. Cousins has never won on MNF. Something has to give.

Minnesota has two sensational WR’s in Thielen and Diggs. Olabisi Johnson has been a good slot WR as well. Almost shockingly, Minnesota has put together a really good OL. Reiff and O’Neill are playing really well at Tackle. Garrett Bradbury has been a rock at Center. Kline and Elflein have brought power to the Guard position. Kyle Rudolph has been ageless. Irv Smith is developing nicely, as expected. Minnesota will likely be without Cook and Mattison. They’ll have Michael Boone and Ameer Abdullah as back-ups. The Packers will need to get in the face of Cousins. If so, they’ll force him into bad decisions. CJ Ham is often used as a short yardage back.

Danielle Hunter has developed into the best pass rusher in the NFL. Linval Joseph and Shamar Stephen eat up ball carriers in the run game. Everson Griffen isn’t the same player, but he’s still a weapon. Stephen Weatherly gives the ‘queens good snaps. Eric Kendricks is among the best ILB’s in football. Harrison Smith is among the best Safeties in football. Xavier Rhodes’ game has diminished. Trae Waynes is good for at least one pass interference, if he’s targeted. He’ll grab all game. Mike Hughes has struggled to rebound from injury. This Minnesota secondary can be targeted on double moves. They’ll bite. They’re susceptible to giving up the big play. Play action can also beat up this defense.

This is a let your nuts hang style of game for the Packers. Go win it and the Packers are in position for a 1st round bye. Lose and go beat a hapless Lions team to clinch the Division. The Packers should be playing loose. They are in position to accomplish the goal of winning the North either way. But, a win would go a long way in positioning the Packers for a run to the Super Bowl. So, play free, have fun and win the game!

Aaron Rodgers has played best when he’s targeted Adams, Lazard, Kumerow, Williams and Jones. He also trusts Graham and Lewis. I hope these 7 players are targeted on the vast majority of the Packers snaps. If so, I think we’ll see Aaron Rodgers playing in rhythm and executing the game plan. Rodgers is so cerebral, but he needs to trust his receivers. He trusts those 7 receivers. He seems to also trust Vitale. Could we see a big play to Vitale down the sideline?

If the Packers can limit Hunter and if Jaire and King can play as they did in the Week 2 match-up, the Packers will win this game. If the Packers OL struggles, it’ll be tough for the Packers to move the football. With time, the Packers will be able to expose a questionable ‘queens secondary. If King and Jaire are unable to contain the ‘queens dynamic duo, Minnesota will move the ball with an abundance of big plays.

Kevin King will be targeted on multiple deep balls. Pettine has to give him help over the top. Mission #1 is to prevent the deep ball. If Pettine can prevent the big play, Cousins will not stay patient and he’ll give the Packers opportunities to force a turnover.

When Harrison Smith steps up to the line, he must be accounted for.

I fully expect to see LaFleur pulling out all of the stops. Look for some trickery that results in a big play.

On December 24, 2004, the Packers went into Minnesota and left victorious to stake claim to the Division. On December 23, 2019, the Packers will do the same.

Packers 27.
‘queens 23.

My Take -> Week 15

Greetings, G-Force.

December wins must be cherished. There’s no need for concern over style points. Scoreboard points are all that matters. Enjoy these days.

As I write, I listen to Burning Spear’s “Marcus Garvey” album. Deeply rooted reggae vibes echo through my mind. I sip a Left Hand Chai Milk Stout. It’s nitro, creamy goodness with the perfect amount of Chai spice finish. The beer is a winner!

My quick vibes from the last week:

Matt LaFleur was dialed in. Don’t let this offensive performance fool you about his playcalling. He was in attack mode. A lot of motion. A lot of play action. But, the fumble and two near misses on deep balls made it look less than appetizing. If Rodgers holds onto the ball and if he hits Jones/Graham, the Packers would’ve had a 37 point performance. These are “if’s” yes, but the players have to execute the play. On the deep balls, the call worked, the players didn’t finish.

Mike Pettine set the tone for the game. He was in control from the start. He made sure the stage was too big for Haskins.

Aaron Rodgers did not climb the wizard list with his performance against Washington.

You are what your record says you are and last I checked the Packers hold the #2 seed in the NFC with a 10-3 record. Toss away the stats, wins are what matters. The most important stat is the standings. With 3 weeks to play, the Packers are sitting pretty.

I marvel at the way Aaron Jones keeps his balance. In a both frantic yet casual way, he spins his arms in circles to sharply turn corners and to cut the ball back across the field. Jones consistently uses his balance as arguably his greatest trait for picking up yards when they don’t appear to exist.

Across the board, the OL played really well. Fun to watch Jenkins in short yardage. On 4th and 1, Jenkins had the quickness and the power to take both the DL and the ILB out of the play to help Williams pick up the first down.

Quietly, Billy Turner has had a really good season.

Matt LaFleur is not afraid to call 3-TE sets. And, I love it.

I wish Jimmy Graham had an extra gear. Graham played as well as we can expect him to, at this stage of his career. He did his job. And, he’s blocking fairly well, too. But, his athleticism has declined tremendously.

Marcedes Lewis was a blocking machine. He was consistently moving people backwards.

Tonyan! Loved seeing him extend for the TD. Good footwork, too!

Thought Jace did a great job blocking on the outside. On the pass to him in the end zone, he needed to sit down in the zone. If he had, he’d have scored his first TD. Rodgers three the ball where it needed to be. Jace lacked awareness on the play.

Za’Darius Smith continues to be the best player on the team. He brings a palpable energy to the defensive front. I love the way Pettine continues to move him around. He needs to be accounted for on every play. And, Pettine is making it hard to find him.

Kenny Clark! Let’s hope we see more of that version of Clark in the month of December and beyond. He was a force!

Another star shining day for Jaire.

Adrian Amos continues to look more and more comfortable with this defense. He’s becoming a peg that Pettine is putting in position to be the playmaker. Amos has been performing really well most of the year, but especially as of late. He was dynamic in the win over Washington.

Chandon Sullivan played well. Fun to see him deflect the 3rd down pass to get the defense off of the field.

Twice, the ball was on the ground for the defense to steal. Unlucky to not come up with it.

There was a Josh Jackson sighting and the results were positive.

Great game, Darnell Savage. The strip was beautiful. He also made a TD saving tackle on the play in which Guice got injured. I’d have preferred to see Savage tackling him higher to prevent the Dalvin Cook style TD that we saw earlier this year, but a really good tackle by Savage in the open field.

Blake Martinez was active and in charge.

Lancaster and Lowry were setting a physical tone at the line of scrimmage.

Rashan Gary isn’t always the quickest off the snap, but when he gets his motor revving, he has quickness and a desire to finish the play.

It was clear that this game was really important to Preston Smith. He’s up to 11.5 sacks on the year.

Tyler Ervin!!! It’s been a woeful year for a return units, but Ervin offered hope. He wasn’t flashy, but he made people miss and run forward. He was shifty finding his was up the field. 4 returns with a 12.8 average and a long of 18 yards. I’ll take that weekly.

Mason Crosby. Money!

While it was not a super feel good kind of day for the offense, it should be noted that the offense, once again, was able to deliver a 4th Quarter Championship Drive to essentially seal the game. The offense got the ball back with 9:58 to play. They took over from their own 11. They went 74 yards on 14 plays. They ate up 7:24 off of the clock. They made it a 2-score game and ensured that this team got to 10-3.

Aaron Rodgers is a proud man. He knows the headlines. He’s not happy about it. Expect Rodgers’ soul to shine this weekend.

Quick NFL Draft thought: I anticipate that Gutekunst will look to trade back in this years Draft to fully stock up on mid to late round picks. With the way the Packers cap situation looks over the next two years, Gutekunst is going to have to compile a number players on the roster who have 1st year contracts. Look for him to pair those youngsters with multiple veterans who will come on 1 year prove it deals, similar to what he did with Wilkerson and Lewis over the last two years.

For my Packers 2020 Mock Draft, I used the Draft Network’s big board. As a side note, the Draft Network’s Draft order is not updated as it only recognizes the Packers as having 2 7th round picks. Here goes:

Round 1: Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson.
Round 2:Austin Jackson, OT, USC.
Round 3: Rashard Lawrence, SL, LSU.
Round 4: JR Reed, S, Georgia.
Round 5: Lamical Perine, RB, Florida.
Round 6: Jonathan Garvin, EDGE, []_[].
Round 6: Kendall Coleman, EDGE, Syracuse.
Round 7: Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame.
Round 7: Cameron Brown, ILB, Penn State.
Round 7: Daelin Hayes, EDGE, Notre Dame.

This week - its the hated Bears coming to Lambeau Field. The Bears are coming to Titletown, U.S.A. with full confidence. They've won 3 straight and hold onto hope for a late playoff push. The Bears entered 2019 with Super Bowl aspirations. The Packers have a chance to crush their dreams. With a Packers win, the Bears would be eliminated from playoff contention. It's December. It's the NFL's greatest rivalry. It'll be near single digit weather. Both teams have winning records. It doesn't get any better than this.

The Bears have started to find a rhythm on offense. Their young QB has, once again, started to run with the football. If he's forced to be a pocket QB, he's proven to be ineffective, but when he can use his mobility to attack a defense, he is a dangerous weapon. He throws well on the run and he's a good running QB. When he's extending plays with his legs, he can control a game. David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen make for a good 1-2 combo at RB. Both are solid receiving options. Montgomery is excellent at breaking tackles. Cohen is as elusive as it gets. He'll be targeted multiple times as a receiver. Anthony Miller is an ascending WR who wins in traffic. Allen Robinson has superstar potential. He's been terrific for the Bears during their winning streak. The Bears might be without Taylor Gabriel and Javon Wims. Cordarrelle Patterson always seems to make a play against the Packers. Pettine will have to have a plan in place to limit Patterson when he touches the ball. The Packers must attack the right side of the Bears OL. Alex Bars and Rashaad Coward aren't legitimate NFL starters. Charles Leno is a good player at LT, but he struggles with a speed rush. Cody Whitehair and James Daniels are good players, but they're grabbers. With a quick shifting hip move to the inside, they're susceptible to holding calls.

Roy Robertson-Harris has destroyed the Packers over the last two years. He's listed as questionable. If he can't go, the Packers would catch a huge break. The Bears get Hicks back this week. He's disruptive. Khalil Mack is still the most disruptive EDGE player in the game. While the stats aren't flashy, Leonard Floyd is also playing very good football. Bilal Nichols and Nicholas Williams have overachieved for the Bears this year. Both have brought great hustle. At ILB, Nick Kwiatkoski has been great. He's stepped in and is in the midst of earning himself a nice contract as a UDFA after the year. Kevin Pierre-Louis has also played with a speed + power combination that has grabbed attention. The Bears back-up ILB's have shown premier abilities. Kyle Fuller continues to be a shutdown CB. He jumps routes and is a game changer. Eddie Jackson also brings the ability to immediately alter the complexion of a game. Prince Amukamara has started to show signs of decline. HaHa Clinton-Dix has played fairly well for Chicago. He's been around the ball. Buster Skrine has been good in the slot, but I still believe that he can be beaten.

Throughout the year, the Packers have ensured that Aaron Jones was fresh for the stretch run. This week - Aaron Jones should touch the ball 25 times. The Packers have to be dictators at the line of scrimmage. With it, the play action pass will open up.

Look for LaFleur to test Amukamara on a deep ball that comes off of play action pass early in the game. Rodgers must trust the play design and take a shot. Lazard is much bigger than Amukamara and would be able to win a jump ball. The Packers have to take advantage of that match-up.

Defensively, look for Pettine to stack the right side of the Bears line. Clark and Preston Smith on the left side of the defense with Za'Darius coming on the stunt. He'll overload the Bears and force the Bears young QB to play with happy feet.

The Packers should have Jaire match-up with Allen Robinson all over the field. On 3rd down, it feels like Robinson is always the Bears young QB's first read. Miller is the 2nd. If Jaire can neutralize Robinson, it'll be tough for Chicago to move the football.

On two occasion, the Packers defense will have a chance to force a turnover. If the defense can hold onto the football, the Packers should win this game by 2-scores.

Look for Campbell to spy the Bears young QB.

I expect to see a razor sharp performance from Rodgers. 2 TD's. 0 turnovers.

December wins are fun wins. Regardless of how they look.

Packers 27.
Bears 16.

My Take -> Week 14

Greetings, G-Force.

Sometimes, you have to get right at the expense of someone else’s wrong. In 2019, the New York Giants are not a very good football team. The Packers took advantage of their ineptitude. And, suddenly, the bounce is back in the energy of the Packers locker room.

As I write, I’m sipping a Newcastle Nut Brown Ale. Almost oddly, I had a craving for it. So I bought a 6-pack of it. I’m going to bury these pups. I’m listening to Janis Joplin’s Greatest Hits. My 4 year old asks me to listen to “Me and Bobby McGee” on a daily basis and because of it, this album has been spinning in my ears frequently.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

Matt LaFleur came out in attack mode. He delivered early knock out punches to Lazard. Loved seeing Lazard in motion, changing sides in the slot. Play action. Chunk play successes followed. Regardless of the result, I loved the early shovel pass to Davante. These are good moments to have on film. These plays set up trickery in the future.

Mike Pettine. Maybe his best showing since Week 2. The Kevin King interception was all Pettine. Pettine gave King help over the top, which allowed King to play the underneath route. Pettine drew up the defense to perfection and the results followed.

Aaron Rodgers. It was near mastery. Calling his shot to BIG DOG was fantastic. The 4th and 10 throw. The dart to Lazard for the TD. Ducking low to avoid the rush and then floating it to Adams for a Tud!

After being shut out for the first 10 weeks, it’s really nice to see Davante in the end zone 3 times over the last two weeks. LaFleur did a really nice job of designing plays to get the ball into his hands.

Allen Lazard is proving to be a worthwhile 2nd option at WR. He’s a big target that Rodgers clearly trusts.

It was a great relief to see G-Mo grabbing a couple of clutch catches to move the sticks.

What has happened for MVS? I had high hopes for him. He was showing signs early on. Now, he’s disappeared. At some point in December, the Packers are going to hit on a deep ball to MVS.

I want to see Jace targeted either on a seam route or on a crossing route in the month of December. He has the play speed to add a dimension to this offense that is currently missing.

I was so happy for Marcedes Lewis. And, to see the leadership that Rodgers displayed throughout the game, especially on the TD, was an absolute joy to witness.

Plainly stated, Aaron Jones needs to see the ball a minimum of 20 times per game.

Jamaal Williams running hard to close out games will never get old. Wish LaFleur would get back to having Williams and Jones back on the field at the same time.

Bulaga has been an absolute stud this year. He’s earning big coin after the season. If not from Green Bay, he’ll get it somewhere.

Za’Darius Smith is the best player on the team. He absolutely destroys the opposition week-in and week-out. He doesn’t always get home, but he’s disrupting plays all-of-the-time. Soon, he has a strip sack coming. He’s close, he just needs to swipe at the ball.

Preston Smith needs to refind his stride. He’s lost a little of his big play momentum. It’s time for him to turn up the December heat.

Kenny Clark with the big play on 3rd and 1 to stop Barkley set the tone for a very impressive run-defense performance.

Lowry flashed run stuffing skills. He was quick off the snap and swallowing the ball.

Stoked to see Savage grab another pick. The rookie has added a speed dimension that this defense has sorely missed.

Another impressive performance by Amos. He’s the surest tackling safety that I can remember in Green Bay.

Jaire was on lock down. After a minor mid-season blip in his performance, Jaire is back to his normal self. He was dynamite in NJ.

Once again, Kyler Fackrell was close. He couldn’t finish, but he was close.

What if Rashan Gary puts it all together and wins a play in December? Wouldn’t that be riveting? Would love to see his sack excitement. This year has had to have been a mental struggle for him.

A memorable performance by Mason Crosby. My heart goes out to him and his family. His 47 yard kick was a sight to see!

The Packers punt return units have been pathetic. It’s well documented. But, Gutekunst isn’t resting. The Tyler Ervin addition has me super stoked! I believe Ervin has the skillset to change the Packers fortunes. Prior to the 2016 NFL Draft, I wrote this on him: 10.) Tyler Ervin, San Jose St. Round 4. I heart Tyler Ervin. While he's undersized, he hits the hole fearlessly. On runs to the edge, he's blazing fast. He's a lethal weapon out of the backfield as a receiver. He runs a fantastic wheel route. A LB won't be able to cover him if you put him in the flat. More often than not, he'll make the first person miss. But, he's an absolute liability in pass protection. He gets run over. He lacks awareness as a blocker. It wouldn't shock me if he shows up well as a great Punt Returner.

For this week’s 2020 Packers Mock Draft, I used the Fanspeak Big Board:

Round 1: Alex Leatherwood, OT, Alabama.
Round 2: Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson.
Round 3: Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah.
Round 4: Hunter Bryant, TE, Washington
Round 5: Devin Duvernay, WR, Texas.
Round 6: JR Reed, S, Georgia.
Round 6: Josh Uche, EDGE, Michigan.
Round 7: Chris Orr, ILB, Wisconsin.
Round 7: Troy Pride, CB, Notre Dame.
Round 7: Logan Wilson, ILB, Wyoming.

This week – the Packers host the Redskins. With the win, the Packers will reach the magical 10-win platform. This year, it might require 11 wins to make the playoffs in the competitive NFC. Nonetheless, more often than not, historically, 10 wins has meant a playoff berth. The Redskins are a bad football team. I fully expect the Packers to win handily this weekend.

Dwayne Haskins will start at QB for the Redskins. The rookie has walked away victorious the last two weeks, but he’s not ready to play in this league. The Redskins live off of their run game. AP can still play. Historically, he’s dominated GB. He’ll be ready to run. I know he’s banged up, but I fully expect him to play. Derrius Guice is a stiff-arm, tough running machine. He’ll challenge the Packers front. Terry McLaurin has been an impressive rookie WR. He’s a big play threat. I imagine the Redskins will challenge Kevin King with McLaurin running a double move route down the sideline. Paul Richardson is an average WR who has a tough time separating from a jam at the line. Jeremy Sprinkle has been a fighter as a blocker, but he’s battled with limited success. He is a talented short yardage route runner. He’s a decent possession receiving TE. The Redskins OL has been a physical component of their team. They’ve performed well as run blockers. I don’t believe Donald Penn and Morgan Moses can hold up at Tackle. Additionally, there’s no chance that Ereck Flowers can block Za’Darius Smith. The Packers should line Smith right over Flowers all day.

The Redskins DL is legitimate. Jonathan Allen, Ryan Kerrigan, Montez Sweat and Da’Ron Payne were all 1st round picks and they’re all living up to expectations. Matt Ioannidis has developed into a really good player. He’s a high effort player. He flashes physical dominance, at times. Cole Holcomb has surprised me as a rookie. He’s been much better than I anticipated. He’s played stronger and more tenacious than I envisioned he would. He has a promising future. The Redskins have issues in the secondary. Josh Norman’s game has diminished. Landon Collins hasn’t made the impact that the Redskins hoped after signing a massive FA contract. Quinton Dunbar is a very good player. I’d expect him to shadow Adams all over the field.

This is the week that the Packers see a punt return of more than 10 yards. Tyler Ervin will make someone miss. He’ll be anxious to make a play. He’ll dance his way to the second level.

If the Packers can slow down the Redskins run game, this one won’t be close. Haskins won’t be prepared to deal with the intensity of Lambeau Field. Haskins will commit at least two turnovers. This game resides in the hands of the Packers run defense. Look for Pettine to play a bunch of 5 man fronts with Lancaster, the Smith Bros., Lowry and Clark. He’ll also have 2 ILB’s on the field. Pettine will trust Jaire 1 on 1. He’ll give King help over the top.

Look for the Packers to come out with an abundance of play action. I expect Rodgers to take two shots deep down the field early in the game. I’m hoping MVS gets back on track.

Za’Darius grabs at least one sack and likely 2.

Savage grabs another pick on an overthrown ball.

Haskins isn’t ready for this, if the Lambeau Faithful rises to the task!

My Take -> Week 13

Greetings, G-Force.

First and foremost, a Happy Thanksgiving to all of my readers. I appreciate the likes, the shares and the retweets more than I can state. I always enjoy seeing who is following along.

If you’d have told me in August that the Packers would be 8-3 heading into December, I’d have taken that situation in a heartbeat. So, here we are. The Packers in prime position to close the season strong and win the NFC North.

I write with the 7/13/19 Phish show from Alpine Valley in my ears. It was a Saturday Night throw down. I sip a Dry Dock Grapefruit IPA. This beer has that Grapefruit tasting citrus bite coupled by a sharp hop delight. This beer has become a staple in my fridge.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

Matt LaFleur’s team is trending in the wrong direction. They’ve been both dominated and unprepared in two of the last three weeks. Imperfections were to be expected for the first year coach. LaFleur has brought a rejuvenated energy to the Locker Room. He’s added a refreshing optimism to the Locker Room. He has brought a winning spirit to the Locker Room. Now, he must ensure that the Packers are ready to win in December. Historically, teams that can get hot in December are poised to make a serious run in the playoffs. The month of December will define LaFleur’s rookie season as a Head Coach in the NFL. The Packers have 5 games left, 4 of which have losing records.

Early on Pettine’s defense looked ready to play. They were aggressive and in attack mode. They set the tone. But, as the pressure lightened, the Packers defense struggled. Once again, there were major miscommunications in the secondary and big plays followed. I’m beginning to wonder if this defense is capable of playing 60 quality minutes of football.

This team desperately needs Aaron Rodgers. Over the last 3 games, Rodgers has not seen the field. It looks as though he’s watching the rush and not his receivers. He has open receivers, he’s not seeing the field.

Jimmy Graham has to make that catch. Simple as that.

Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams playing nearly identical snaps? Enough already. Let’s give Aaron Jones the month of December. It’s unbelievable that LaFleur can’t get the ball into Jones’ hands in the open field. LaFleur’s offense hasn’t suddenly lost all semblance of creativity. It’s bland. It’s predictable. It’s been unproductive.

Where have the motion gone in this offense? Where are the screens? Where are the fake jet and orbit sweeps? Why aren’t Williams and Jones being utilized on the field at the same time anymore?

MVS has to do a better job of trying to stay in bounds on the pass in the back of the end zone.

Za’Darius Smith is a superstar. He dominates. He offers a plethora of moves to free himself from blockers.

Thought Adrian Amos played well. I liked him creeping up to the line. When he is in position as a tackler, he finishes.

The officiating didn’t decide the game in any fashion. The 49ers were clearly the better team. But, early on, the refs definitely aided in the Packers falling behind 10-0. The penalty on Adams was highly questionable. The third down penalty on King that denied the Packers a crucial stop was even worse than the Adams penalty. The 10-0 deficit felt heavy early and the lead was significantly assisted by two major calls that went against the Packers.

Where is the spark on the offensive side of the ball? Where’s the urgency? Why are they often breaking the huddle with less than 15 seconds left?

This offense needs to dictate the tempo of the game. Too often, we hear that it was tough sledding playing behind the sticks and that’s it was difficult to get into the offense after falling behind. That shouldn’t be the case. LaFleur is letting the opposition determine his game plan. He needs to be the one to set the structure for the game. This offense needs to go up-tempo.

The SF DL was much more physical than the GB OL. I was really hoping that wouldn’t be the case. Linsley was awful. Disappointing.

The Packers return units are on the brink of becoming among the worst in the history of the NFL. They’re unbelievable bad.

What’s happened to JK Scott?

This team needs a spark. Aaron Rodgers. It’s your turn. Trust your teammates. Let the ball rip. This team is still in position to accomplish anything that they set their minds on. But, they need their 2x MVP QB to return to form.

For weeks 2020 Mock Packers Draft, I used the CBS Draft Board on Fanspeak:

Round 1: Derrick Brown, DL, Auburn.
Round 2: Kenneth Murray, ILB, Oklahoma.
Round 3: Alaric Jackson, OT, Iowa.
Round 4: Leki Fotu, DL, Utah.
Round 5: Paddi Fisher, ILB, Northwestern.
Round 6: Julian Blackmon, S, Utah.
Round 6: Daelin Hayes, EDGE, ND.
Round 7: Ben Bredesen, OG, Michigan.
Round 7: Walker Little, OT, Stanford.
Round 7: Trajan Bandy, CB, []_[].

This week, it’s the Giants. In New Jersey. Two storied franchise with a rich history of battling in important games in recent memory.

At 2-9, the Giants aren’t as poor as their record indicates. They just don’t know how to win late.

Saquon Barkley is dynamite out of the backfield. He’s tough to corral. And, he has the speed to outrun most defenders. He’s also used extensively as a receiver. Sterling Shepard has been banged up, but when he’s on the field, he’s a threat. Golden Tate is still dangerous with the ball in his hands. He’s a great third down receiver. Slayton is a great deep threat. Engram, when healthy, has inconsistent hands, but he has speed to cause defenses fits. Daniel Jones has had promising moments, but every game, he’s going to give the opposition an opportunity to steal the football. When teams take it away, they can normally grab a multiple score lead. But, when teams haven’t cashed in on those opportunities, Jones has shown the ability to cause problems for defenses. He throws a good slant, skinny post and deep balls. Jones can also get the 1st down marker with his legs. He’s tougher than he looks and won’t shy away from contact.

Defensively, the Giants have a young and improving DL. Dexter Lawrence, BJ Hill and Dalvin Tomlinson all bring high energy and a unique quickness + power off of the ball. They’re all still fairly raw and have battled inconsistencies. Markus Goldman has been a force rushing the passer. He brings high octane energy and a full gas tank. Lorenzo Carter has not developed into a dependable pass rusher like I envisioned he might, but he will occasionally be disruptive. Alec Ogletree has performed well in pass defense. He struggled to disengage in the run game and should be attacked. The Giants secondary has been vulnerable. Though injured, Peppers has been a good addiction when active. Deandre Baker has gained valuable experience as a rookie, but he’s taking his lumps right now. Janoris Jenkins can still play, but he’s not the same player that the Giants relies on in 2016. Julian Love and Corey Ballentine have shown promise as rookies, but neither is fully ready to compete on the big stage. Antoine Bethea brings a veteran presence and leadership to a mostly youthful secondary that has been picked on all year.

The Giants will test Kevin King on a deep ball early. It’ll likely be to Slayton.

Look for Saquon to get the ball on the swing pass. They’ll try to get Saquon lined up against either Campbell or Martinez.

The Giants don’t have the secondary to run with the Packers. Adams will have too much shake. Lazard will have too much height and strength. MVS has too much speed. MVS gets back on track this week.

The Giants inconsistencies on the OL should allow for Clark and the Smith Bros. to make a play. Look for Fackrell to also make a difference to help the Packers get off of the field on a 3rd down.

If Rodgers is seeing the field, the crossing routes should be open most of the day.

This one will be much closer than any of us want it to be. But, the Giants haven’t been able to win late and the Packers have been mostly fortuitous in close games. The Packers get back on track in the win column. It won’t be pretty, but a win is a win.

Giants 19.

My Take -> Week 12

Greetings, G-Force.

A week after the Packers failed to show up for an afternoon battle with the Chargers, the team from Titletown, U.S.A. responded with an emotionally draining, hard fought victory in a Wintery Wonderland at Lambeau Field. Is there a more beautiful sight in sports than the snow falling under the lights at Lambeau? If so, I have yet to witness it. For those that were fortunate enough to attend, I proudly declare that I’m absolutely jealous of you.

As I write, I sip a Casey Brewing Blackberry Fruit Stand. It's a n ale aged in Oak Barrels with Blackberries. It's a lighter beer at only 5.5%. Tart finish. Oak fruit forward. If you're not familiar with Casey Brewing, it's among my favorites. With a trip to WV on the horizon, John Denver's Country Roads plays in the background.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

Following the bye, the Packers are well rested and healthy. With a path to home field advantage squarely in front of them. In order to secure the #1 seed, they must win this weekend.

LaFleur’s team was the beneficiary of two costly mistakes by Allen against the Panthers. His team capitalized on those mistakes. The Packers came out ready to play early and delivered the goal line stop on the final play.

I was really surprised when Pettine only rushed three on 4th down on the final Panthers drive. I thought he’d try and get in the young QBs face.

We’ve certainly seen Aaron Rodgers play better than he did against Carolina. Still, the Packers scored 24 points. Rodgers missed two wide open WRs in the end zone on the final drive of the 2nd Qtr.

Mason Crosby. What a tremendous kick.

Aaron Jones has officially developed into a top tier RB. He’s still underutilized. I wish he’d have been on the field when the Packers got the ball inside the 10 at the end of the 2nd Qtr. Jones has an uncanny ability to find the goal. He has an extra gear in short spaces and is more powerful than his frame appears to hold.

It was great to see Davante Adams return to form. He was unstoppable. Imagine this, Adams has 0 TDs and the Packers are 8-2.

The Packers OL has been remarkably better in run blocking than in years past. Elgton Jenkins and Billy Turner have revitalized the interior run game.

Another strong performance by Jamaal Williams.

It’s a great treat to watch the Lazard and Rodgers relationship grow.

Rodgers’ on-field mastery completely fooled Kuechly on the deep ball to Graham in the 2nd Qtr.

I really hope that MVS can find his stride again. His presence has disappeared in this offense.

I loved watching Jace block. High effort in the run game. Held the point well in run game. Want to see him as a receiver.

In grand fashion, the Packers averaged 6 yards per carry on the ground.

Once again, the Packers defense bent often, but they didn’t break. They gave up more than 400 yards, but only 16 points. As long as the turnovers continue, the defense should be fine, but when they don’t get sacks or turnovers, they struggle to get off of the field.

Za’Darius was a disruptive force. Ignore the stats, he was dominant. He was consistently pressuring Allen off of his spot.

Preston was dynamite again. Wish they’d never drop him in coverage. This team needs him in attack mode, not on his heels in space.

Fun to see Kenny Clark playing great football. He was moving lineman and getting a push.

Thought Lancaster showed well in the run game.

I’ve been waiting for Fackrell to make a big play. I thought it’d come in the form of a strip sack. I’ll take the goal line stop to seal the game. Right when I was having visions of Steve Beuerlein sneaking it in to beat the Packers in 1999.

Montravious Adams was also active on the line of scrimmage.

Need Blake Martinez to attack the line of scrimmage rather than waiting for the back to make the first move. Blake is playing too flat footed.

T-Mon with the pick! Point saver!

Amos was in the right position, just didn’t finish.

Keep waiting for Savage to be a savage and make a splash play.

Kevin King continues to get picked on in man coverage on down and out routes and comebacks. The Packers should look to give him safety help over the top, so King can jam at the line of scrimmage.

It’s time for a Pettine to let Savage cover the TE out of the slot. When the TE is lined up tight to the line, Campbell or Amos should handle the duties. Enough with the zone. Have to go man.

I continue to want to see more of Keke on the field.

Thought Campbell settles in nicely. He’s dependable. Clearly, Pettine trusts him. Loved the strip of McCaffrey.

I want Jaire to become the guy that closes out games. Wish he'd have caught the ball and danced for 6.

The Packers and their play clock issues. I’ll never understand it. It seems inexcusable. So, are the abundance of pre-snap false starts. The devil is in the details and offensively, the pre-snap details have been sloppy.

The defense continues to have communication issues. Watching Kevin King in zone while the rest of the defense is in man is beyond frustrating. Gotta clean it up.

The Packers had 10 penalties against Carolina. Yikes!

Footing continues to be an issue for the Packers on the Lambeau surface. Wish they could figure out the cleat situation.

8-2. With their best football seemingly ahead of them. The sky is the limit for this team. Just have to put it all together. And, they have to stay healthy.

Here’s this weeks 2020 Packers Mock Draft and for it, I used my good friend, Craig Forrestal’s, updated draft board that can be found on Fanspeak:

Round 1: Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson.
Round 2: D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia.
Round 3: Albert Okwuegbunam, TE, Missouri.
Round 4: Walker Little, OT, Stanford.
Round 5: Richard LeCounte, S, Georgia.
Round 6: Lorenzo Neal, DL, Purdue.
Round 6: Jeff Thomas, WR, []_[].
Round 7: Logan Wilson, ILB, Wyoming.
Round 7: Lavert Hill, CB, Michigan.
Round 7: Jon Runyan, G, Michigan.

This week, it’s the 49ers. In SF. The winner will hold possession of the #1 seed in the NFC. It’s a monumental Week 12 battle.

Kyle Shanahan is the best play caller in the NFL. He is a mastermind. He has redefined misdirection. He lives off of the screen pass. Screen pass, play action and crossing routes. He loves the wheel route to the RB. He has perfected the ability to get the ball into a playmakers hands in space. Shanahan loves motion. Pre-snap, he creates confusion in the masses. Shanahan finds mismatches.

During the offseason, I really wanted the Packers to take a look at Tevin Coleman. I thought he was the ideal back for the LaFleur offense. Instead, he landed back in the hands of Shanahan. And, Shanahan is using him in brilliant fashion. Coleman is a dynamic weapon on the inside run and in the screen game. He's a threat to make an explosive play every time he touches the ball. Jimmy Garoppolo is a smart QB who sees the field well.
He's clutch down the stretch. Raheem Mostert is a quality between-the-tackles runner. Deebo Samuel is dangerous after the catch. Emmanuel Sanders is a star. Dante Pettis is a talented receiver in traffic. Marquise Goodwin is a speedster. Richie James is a threat in the open field. If healthy, George Kittle is among the best TE's in football. The 49ers have a tough, athletic OL. Mike McGlinchey and Joe Staley are stars at Tackle. Staley has battled injury and his status is in question. Laken Tomlinson is a solid LG. Weston Richburg hasn't been the pro that most expected, but he's still more than serviceable. Kyle Juszczyk is an old school punch-you-in-the-mouth FB who is also a weapon as a receiver out of the backfield.

Defensively, the 49ers get to the QB. Dee Ford has been dynamite, but he is injured and might not play. Nick Bosa has lived up to his pre-draft hype. He gets to the QB. DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead are long and disruptive. They're massive men in the middle of the DL. I loved Fred Warner coming out of college. I really wish he was a Packer. He's been everything that I thought he'd be, a legitimate 3-down LB. Smart. Playmaker. Dre Greenlaw has been a better than expected rookie. He's been around the ball and playing with speed. Richard Sherman still has game. Ahkello Witherspoon was great and college and he's developing nicely in the NFL. I would like to see the Packers testing K'Waun Williams and Emmanuel Moseley deep down the field.

This game scares me. Kyle Shanahan scares me. Most of his play calls are designed to be passes that are 3-5 yards down the field with the possibility to grab 20+ yards. Shanahan designs game plans to get yards after the catch. I don't trust the Packers defense to make tackles against high-end athletes in space. This is a big test for Blake Martinez.

If both teams play their best football, I'd like to think that the Packers will win. But, when Rodgers gets pressured early, he's occasionally struggled to find his form. It wouldn't surprise me if SF comes at the Packers with heightened pressure early to try and knock the Packers offense out of rhythm.

The Packers are going to have to watch Coleman in a similar way to how they man-marked McCaffrey. Campbell will likely hold that responsibility. The Packers defense cannot over pursue this defense. Mind the gap. Stay in your lanes. And, watch the back side of the field. With Shanahan, it's all about deception. He lives to confuse the defense. And, often, the ball ends up on the opposite side of where you thought the ball would be.

The 49ers defense has a ton of strengths. But, I don't think they have anyone who can run with MVS on a deep route. We haven't seen much of MVS recently. Look for him to make a splash play.

Davante beats Sherman on a double move.

The offense might struggle to move the ball at-times, but Rodgers will connect on a couple of chunk plays.

Za'Darius comes up with a big strip sack from the blind side.

The defense will give up yards, once again. But, if they hold to FG's and come up with a crucial turnover, I like the Packers chances.

I'm expecting Shanahan and LaFleur to try and out-wit one another. Both pull out all of the tricks. Neither will hold anything back. Thankfully, LaFleur has the better QB. Rodgers returns to CA and comes up big in the clutch.

This one will be intense.

My Take -> Week 10

Greetings, G-Force.

The Packers had seen the Bears and ‘queens lose. They had command of the Division title in their grasp. Suddenly, they weren’t prepared. They lacked muscles. They played with small testicles and they got plowed over. In all phases. Life goes on.

As I write, I listen to the Yonder Mountain Mountain Tracks Vol 3 album. This album has always brought me great joy. This past Monday, I was fortunate to attend the “What the Night Brings” concert. It was a tribute to Jeff Austin. It was an excellent reminder of Austin’s prowess. If you’re not familiar with his music, put on this album and toss on the “If There’s Still a Ramblin’ in the Rambler” version. You’ll be captured. Stellar energy! I drink a New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin. It has a nice cinnamon pumpkin front with a perfect habanero pepper finish. I really enjoy the blend in these flavors.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

For those that are new to this blog, I'm not a sports journalist. I'm a blogger. With an optimistic realist perspective on the Packers. And, on life. So, with weeks like we just witnessed, my thoughts are minimized. It doesn't do me any good to spit an abundance of negativity. It doesn't do you any good to read it. It's important to recognize that it's a week-to-week league. This is a defining week for Matt LaFleur's locker room. This is a defining week for the 2019 Green Bay Packers. Championship teams respond to adversity. The Packers must show up this week.

The Packers went to California with a chance to make a statement in the NFC North. Instead, they treated the trip as though it was an October vacation beneath the Palm Trees.

For the first time in Matt LaFleur’s tenure as coach of the Green Bay Packers, his team was unprepared. They were uninspired. They were unmotivated.

When Pettine’s defense isn’t getting turnovers or sacks, it’s struggled to prevent teams from moving the football. Once again, the defense was very good inside the Red Zone, but it was sieve like in stopping the Chargers from moving the ball down the field. At some point, Pettine is going to have to become more aggressive in his attempt to get to the QB.

In the first half, the defense gave up 250 yards. They gave up 13 first downs and only two of those first downs came on 3rd down. They were dominated on 1st and 2nd down.

Aaron Rodgers and the offense never found their rhythm. Discouragingly so.

There was never a doubt that LaFleur would encounter struggles in his first year as Head Coach. I hope he learned from his experience in LA. He should be the dictator. He should not let the defense dictate his playcalling. He was too quick to give up his game plan. And, the Packers offense suffered all day because of it.

The Packers need Kenny Clark to be a difference maker at the line of scrimmage.

I was really hoping to see a play or two designed for Jace Sternberger. He stepped on the field one time. Jenkins jumped early. We never saw the play again.

Dear Wisconsin, can we please legalize marijuana? It’s an herb. It’s medicinal. It heals. It’s absolutely appalling to see how Za’Darius Smith got treated for having a couple of blunts.

Outside of Crosby and Scott, the special teams unit = LOL.

This week’s 2020 Mock Draft:

Round 1: Raekwon Davis, DL, Alabama.
Round 2: Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson.
Round 3: Marvin Wilson, DL, FSU.
Round 4: Jon Runyan, OG, Michigan.
Round 5: Trajan Bandy, CB, []_[].
Round 6: Daelin Hayes, EDGE, ND.
Round 6: Jordyn Brooks, ILB, Texas Tech.
Round 7: Mitchell Wilcox, TE, South Florida.
Round 7: Troy Pride Jr., CB, ND.
Round 7: Bradlee Anae, EDGE, Utah.

This week - the Packers host the Panthers. At Lambeau. In a must win game. Carolina rests one game behind the Packers in the loss column. The Packers can grab a 2-game lead in the loss column with the head-to-head tie breaker over the Panthers with a win on Sunday.

This is a scary game for the Packers. The Packers run defense has been poor. The Panthers rushing offense has been exceptional. Christian McCaffrey is arguably the best RB in the NFL. His speed-power combo is 2nd to none. He’s a terrific pass receiving option as well. The offense revolves around his skills. Kyle Allen has stepped in for Cam Newton and done a good job. He’s taking care of the football and managing the game. He finds the check down. He’s a smart down and distance QB. Greg Olsen remains a reliable TE. He’s physical and offers a presence as both a receiver and a blocker. Curtis Samuel is a deep threat who fights for the ball in the air. DJ Moore has been Allen’s favorite target. The Panthers OL plays with a mean, nasty streak. Almost unbelievably, Greg Van Roten starts for them. In GB, he couldn’t play. But, credit him, he’s developed into a decent player for them. Trai Turner has been a solid Guard for them. Taylor Moton has played well at Tackle. So has Daryl Williams.

Defensively, the Panthers are built with a physical intensity. Luke Kuechly remains the centerpiece. Shaq Thompson can get sideline-to-sideline. Bruce Irvin and Mario Addison are speed rushers from the EDGE. Gerald McCoy presents problems as an interior rusher. He’s Stout in the run game, too. Dontari Poe and Vernon Butler will offer maximum effort each week. James Bradbury continues to develop into a top tier CB. Donte Jackson is an aggressive CB who looks to make the big play. Eric Reid and Tre Boston are two safeties that I had hoped the Packers might bring to GB. They play with brute toughness. Mean dudes! The Panthers lack depth in the secondary.

This will be a great test for Matt LaFleur. It’s a defining game for the 2019 season. The momentum came to a screeching halt in LA. It’s up to LaFleur to ensure that he brings an energized team with a creative offensive design. When Carolina went to SF, Shanahan designed a game plan that left the Panthers scratching their heads. The Panthers struggled with misdirection. LaFleur needs to draft up a similar strategy.

Just like most teams, look for the Panthers to try to establish the run game early. They'll try to milk the clock. They'll be conservative against the Packers defense and expect Allen to be able to convert 3rd and short, if necessary. Pettine will likely play with 2 ILB more this week than we've seen all year. I also expect Ibraheim Campbell to see snaps as a Dime LB.

The Packers have to spy McCaffrey. Everywhere he goes. They should have someone dedicated to him. Could this be a week to test Oren Burks' athleticism?

I'm expecting Rashan Gary to make a play soon. Hoping it comes this week.

After a sluggish first game back from injury, look for Davante Adams to get back on track.

Look for LaFleur to get the ball into Aaron Jones' hands 20 times this weekend.

Rodgers connects with 7 different receivers.

Lazard grabs a Red Zone TD.

I'm sorry, but I can't envision a world in which a Kyle Allen led team beats a healthy Aaron Rodgers led team at Lambeau Field in November. At some point, I expect the stage to get too big for Allen. He'll make a big mistake. Make it difficult, Lambeau! Get Loud!

My Take - Week 9

Greetings, G-Force.

The Packers Sunday Night victory in Arrowhead left me feeling Super. Thus far, in 2019, no matter the in-game circumstance, this team has stepped up to the challenge. The Offense continues to evolve into creative excellence. The Defense continues to show the pension to come up with the big play. Scott and Crosby have been exceptional in the kicking game. There’s something brewing in Titletown, U.S.A.

As I write, I listen to the Phish 8/31/19 show from Commerce City, CO. It’s a phenomenally phunky show with many wicked bass grooves. I was bouncing with my brother, Chad, in a mellowed fantasia dance style. I sip an Avery Mephistopheles. 14.666%. It’s sugary sweet dark goodness. It’s fresh, the 2019 version. And, it’s best served when aged for more than 3 years.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

If you haven’t seen the Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur postgame hug that was posted on Instagram, you’re missing out. It’s all love. It’s a head hug embrace. Brotherhood!

The Matt LaFleur “all gas, no fucking brake” philosophy was put to the test when the Packers had the ball, up 7, at the 2-minute mark. I might’ve spread the Chiefs out and ran Jones up the middle in hopes that he would grab the necessary yardage. If not, I’d have punted and forced the Chiefs to go 85-90 yards with 1:10 to play and no timeouts left. Not LaFleur. He was “all gas, no fucking brake.” Rodgers rewarded him with the game winning completion to Jones for the dagger.

This offense knows how to close out games. With 5:04 left in the game, the Packers took over from their own 2 yard line. The Chiefs had all 3 timeouts. The Packers went with power football. They ran 7 times for 31 yards. After the Jones catch, it was victory formation. That’s a CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVE.

Aaron Rodgers’ audible to a run on 3rd and 2 from his own 10 with 3:40 to play was veteran mastery. He saw that the Chiefs went small to defend the pass, so Rodgers went with Jones to move the chains. Billy Turner got the necessary push and Jones bulled for a crucial 1st down.

If you want to see the camaraderie on this team in its purest form, rewatch the wizardry of Rodgers tossing the TD to Williams in the corner of the end zone. Simply take note of Aaron Jones’ reaction after Williams’ catch. Jones couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate his running mates success. The reaction defines teamship.

With 9:03 left in the game, the Chiefs got equal at 24. In a hostile environment, how’d the Packers respond to the adversity? Two plays. 75 yards. 00:59 off of the clock. A big time TD. This team is special.

Aaron Jones is an absolute superstar. ‘Nuff said.

Watching the budding relationship between Rodgers and Lazard is a thing of beauty. They appear to be in mental lockstep.

What a dynamite catch by Jake Kumerow!

Tyler Lancaster with the game changing play to propel the Packers to victory. Riveting to see the role players providing defining moments. Not only did he knock it loose, but he had the awareness while laying on the ground to scoop up the fortuitous bounce.

Have to love the flea flicker that LaFleur called after the Lancaster forced fumble and fumble recovery. It didn’t work, but I appreciated the aggressiveness.

The play design to free Jones loose on the double move was sublimely crafted by LaFleur.

Jamaal Williams is a force in this offense.

Rodgers connected with 8 different receivers. It’s crystal clear that he is becoming extremely comfortable in this offense.

Chandon Sullivan breaking up the final third down pass to Kelce on a 50/50 ball has to make Gutekunst want to stand in front of a mirror and flex his muscles.

Za’Darius Smith with two more sacks. He’s brought a zest to this team that we haven’t seen in many years.

Phenomenal blocking by Graham, Bakhtiari and Linsley on the 67 yard TD reception by Jones. Maximum effort by Bakhtiari and Linsley to get downfield and Graham held the initial point to spring Jones loose. Epic!

We will marvel over the greatness of Rodgers desperately flinging it to Williams with perfection. But, with a FB and two RBs on the field, why aren’t the Packers pounding the ball right behind Linsley and Jenkins on 3rd and 1?

The defense has come up with big Red Zone stops all year. It had appeared they’d done so again until the TMon penalty came in late on 3rd down.

After a painful 2nd Quarter, the defense really settled down in the 3rd and 4th Quarters, holding the Chiefs to only 7 points. Pettine stuck to his game plan. He was patient. He didn’t take risks. He trusted his secondary to make a play. Sullivan rose to the occasion.

Gutty performance by Blake Martinez playing with one hand.

Montravious Adams was active along the line of scrimmage.

Adrian Amos continues to be a sure tackler in space.

It was really good to see Savage back on the field again. On the first 3rd down of the game, it was Savage who jammed Kelce man to man at the line.

Aaron Jones. 20 touches. 226 yards. 2 TDs. Unbelievable performance.

Watching the Packers carve out an offense without Davante Adams, makes me think that LaFleur and Rodgers must be harmonizing together: “We move through stormy weather. We know that our days are few. And, we dream and we struggle together. And, love will carry us through!”

When Gutekunst writes his agenda for the year, one line item is likely, “I want to enter the NFL Draft with 10 selections.” In an era when many teams don’t value picks, Gutekunst does. He’s an old school scout with a new era approach to playing GM. He won’t overlook any options towards constructing the roster. And, he’s had two seemingly successful drafts, so far. However, a part of me wonders if he regrets his decision to trade Trevor Davis to secure his 10th pick in next years Draft. Especially with the way that Jenkins has played, you’d have to imagine that Gutekunst could unload Lane Taylor for a similar 6th round pick in the offseason. Without Davis, teams continue to show absolutely zero respect for the Packers return unit. They intentionally kick it short and almost amazingly, the Packers often cannot return the ball to the 25 and have yet to get the ball to the 30. Thus far, the Packers return units have been brutal.

The Packers have to figure out their return game. How does Shep let the ball bounce on that last punt? He should’ve easily caught the ball at the 16 yard line. Instead, he let the ball bounce and the Packers were pinned at the 2. Intolerable. It’s disappointing, but Shep was a failed experiment in his rookie year. I would like to see the Packers give Tremon Smith a shot as a punt returner. He did it in college. Also, the Titans cut Darius Jennings. He was with LaFleur in Tennessee last year and led the NFL in kickoff return yardage. Could the Packers take a peep? The Packers need a spark in the return game.

It was another week in which the Smith Bros. desperately needed help getting to the QB. Once again, no one stepped up to the task. I’d been feeling like Fackrell was getting close. But, he’s been quiet the last couple of weeks. Gary continues to mostly get swallowed. At this stage, teams are doubling Preston in definite passing downs. Teams are trusting lineman to win their other 1 on 1 battles. I wonder if Tim Williams will get a chance soon.

Here’s a completely different look than I’ve previously been putting together for a 2020 Mock Draft:

Round 1: Ceedee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma.
Round 2: D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia.
Round 3: Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah.
Round 4: Calvin Throckmorton, OT, Oregon.
Round 5: Jay Tufele, DL, USC.
Round 6: Alohi Gilman, S, Notre Dame.
Round 6: Michael Bushman, TE, BYU.
Round 7: Jeff Thomas, WR, []_[].
Round 7: Liam Eichenbeeg, OT, Notre Dame.
Round 7: Alton Robinson, EDGE, Syracuse.

This week – it’s the Packers traveling to Los Angeles for a home game…err…a road game that will likely be filled with 75% Packers fans. I encourage all Packers fans that attend the game to be extra rowdy. With the SF win on Thursday night, the Packers must keep the pace. At the mid-point in the season, a 1st round bye is 100% within sight. But, each week is precious. The NFC is really tough and the Packers cannot afford to slip up. It might require a 13-3 record in order to earn the right to rest up over Wild Card weekend. Get loud in LA!

The Chargers have an abundance of talent at the skill positions, but they’re really banged up along the OL. Keenan Allen is a weapon. He’s a dangerous possession weapon who is a savvy route runner and a dependable 3rd down target. Mike Williams is a great deep threat. He is a physical WR who gets up and wins jump balls. He’s a competitor, an underappreciated WR. Hunter Henry is skilled. He’s physical. He excels in all phases of the game, but he occasionally displays inconsistent hands. The Chargers have three talented RB’s in Melvin Gordon, Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. Gordon is finally finding his stride after missing training camp and the early portion of the year. Ekeler is a great receiving back out of the backfield. While the Chargers OL has been decimated with injury, they were able to just activate Russell Okung at LT. Okung should significantly improve the protection for Rivers’ backside.

Defensively, the Chargers have two talented pass rushers that will challenge the Packers tackles. Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram are terrific compliments. They’ll present a dangerous threat. When they’re going for the sack, they’re also looking to get the strip. Brandon Mebane and Justin Jones are good players on the DL, but they’re both banged up. Jerry Tillery is a promising rookie. Damion Square is an ascending player on the DL as well. Aged vet, Thomas Davis, remains a physical LB. He can still run as well. Denzel Perryman is a speedy, heady ILB. The Chargers secondary can be beaten. Casey Hayward continues to play at a high level. Desmond King is an above average slot CB. Outside of that, I like the match-ups. Look for Rodgers to target Michael Davis. The Packers should be able to win over the middle of the field against Rayshawn Jenkins and Roderic Teamer.

The Packers defense has to win the line of scrimmage. Look for Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry to have big games. Also, expect the Smith Bros. to get in Rivers’ face. When Rivers gets pressured, he makes mistakes. I expect the Packers defense to force at least two turnovers. It wouldn’t shock me if Rivers throws an interception and if Gordon fumbles.

I have a feeling that Rashan Gary makes a play this weekend.

Za’Darius dominates as a pass rusher from the interior.

Keenan Allen will frustrate the Packers. Williams will catch a pass in excess of 30 yards. Ekeler will grab 1st down yardage in the pass game.

Offensively, look for the Packers to run right at the Chargers defense. Bosa and Ingram like to be aggressive with outside rushes. To slow them down, you have to run right at them. Expect a healthy dose of both Jones and Williams.

I’m hopeful that we see Davante Adams on Sunday. The Chargers won’t be able to cover Adams.

MVS will get targeted on more than 1 deep ball. Rodgers hits him for a long touchdown.

Rodgers continues to stay in rhythm. He continues to find the check-down. He continues to look for the RB’s in the passing game. He continues to play football at an MVP level.

Jimmy Graham scores in the Red Zone.

Crosby continues to stay true to form.

Packers 30.
Chargers 20.

My Take -> Week 8

Greetings, G-Force.

In times like these, it's hard for me to even pretend to be dispassionate. On a day when Lambeau Field showed beautifully through the TV screen, the Packers offense was as dominant as we've seen it since the 2016 NFL Season. And, as the NFL season charges towards to the midway point of the Regular Season, it appears as though the Packers are well positioned to be a legitimate contender in the NFC.

As I write, I sip a New Belgium Oakspire. It's a Bourbon Barrel Ale. A collaboration with Knob Creek. The caramel ale checks in at 9%. The beer doesn't have the hot bourbon feel that I expected. Instead, it's fairly smooth. I listen to the Dirty Heads "Home - Phantoms of Summer" album. If you don't know the song "Sloth's Revenge", I strongly encourage a listen.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

The conversation between LaFleur and Rodgers early in the game was absolutely priceless. Rodgers saying that he wanted 5 TD's. LaFleur saying that he wanted 6. They're excitement together is riveting. They're having fun. Their brotherhood is consistently growing. I love what they're building together.

Through 7 weeks, the Packers defense ranks 26th in the NFL in yards per game. Almost amazingly, although they're giving up yards in the masses, they rank 9th in the NFL in points allowed. In large part, this is possible because the defense has buckled down in the Red Zone. And, they've consistently forced turnovers when their backs are against the wall. This defense plays to every inch on the field. It's not a fluke that this defense stiffens up in the Red Zone. They've done it every week except for against Philly. It's not a fluke that this defense forces turnovers. They've done it in 5 of 7 games. At this stage, as fans, we should expect it. The defense has defined itself.

Make no mistake about it, this has become Matt LaFleur's offense. We're seeing all kinds of misdirection. LaFleur has coached up Rodgers to find the check-down. Rodgers is no longer afraid of the middle of the field. LaFleur has earned Rodgers' trust. It's clear that they're enjoying game planning together.

An encouraging note: we've seen the Packers win a game in which the offense failed to show up in Chicago. And, we've seen the Packers win a game in which the defense struggled to get off of the field. This team has shown that they can win in a wide variety of ways.

Aaron Rodgers. In MVP perform. A sight to see. If he can continue to master this offense, look out. Anything is possible.

Phenomenal to see Aaron Jones getting back on track. He continues to be a weapon in the passing game. His burst through the hole has been a difference maker for this offense.

Jamaal Williams with another great game. I can't get enough of the camaraderie between Williams and Jones.

Without question, this was Jimmy Graham's best game as a Packer. Graham looked quicker. He made a great grab for a TD. He grabbed big yards after the catch. He was moving the sticks. Well done, Jimmy!!

MVS now has 5 30+ yard catches through 7 games. I was hoping that he'd get 10 this year. He's on pace. He's a big play waiting to happen. LaFleur's use of MVS has been spectacular. MVS is consistently running deep routes and stretching the field. That's helping to open up both the underneath routes and the middle of the field. Even as a decoy, MVS' speed is a difference maker. You have to guard him.

Loved seeing G-Mo and MVS showing up with big-time performances when their status was in question.

Another solid game from Dean Lowry. He was moving people.

KEVIN KING!! Another really strong performance by King.

How about Will Redmond? His hustle play saved a TD. That's two weeks in a row that the Packers have chased down a would-be TD from behind to save points. The week before, it was Jaire who made the play.

Blake Martinez didn't look good in coverage. But, he finished with 16 tackles and he was chasing Carr down as he neared the goal line to prevent the TD and force the fumble. Massive play by Blake Martinez.

Championship teams finish halves strong. Championship teams start the 3rd Quarter strong. When Rodgers hit Kumerow to finish the 2nd Quarter, that felt like a game changing play. Especially with the Packers getting the ball to start the 3rd. When LaFleur called the shot play to MVS to start the 3rd off of play-action, he went for the kill. LaFleur was aggressive. Rodgers was dialed in. The Packers were playing Championship football.

Another dominant display by the OL. Every one of them showed well. Jenkins and Turner have brought great quickness as blockers to the run game.

Granted they only played mop up duty, but man, I expected a lot more out of Dexter Williams and Josh Jackson. Williams was slow moving. Jackson had a chance to jump a route and didn't deliver the interception.

At some point, the Smith Bros. are going to need some help in getting to the QB. Whether it's Fackrell, Gary, Clark, Lowry, Keke or Tim Williams; someone has to help the Smith Bros. in applying pressure on the QB and finishing plays. A part of me would like to see Tim Williams active soon and used in spot duty as a pass rushing option.

It is really good to see Oren Burks in pads. Even if it's just on special teams. He's a difference maker to help prevent kickoff returns.

Aaron Rodgers. 25/31. 429 yards. 5 TD's. A rushing TD as well. That's perfection.

DANNY VITALE!! SMOOTH, BABY!! An added dimension in the passing game. Soft hands. And, the yards after the catch. Consider this: he had two catches for 43 yards. That's 21.5 yards per catch. He looked like Tom Rathman out there!

Loved seeing Kumerow stretch for the TD after he tip toed down the sideline.

Lazard with the acrobatic catch!! Wish he'd have hauled in the grab down the sidelines as well. But, nonetheless, another good showing for Lazard.

Adrian Amos is in the open field is a thing of beauty. Love the way he wraps up.

Another stellar showing by JK Scott.

Mason Crosby splitting the uprights makes me smile.

It's thrilling to watch how well Rodgers is seeing the field right now. I can only believe that his play will continue to perform as he continues to get comfortable in this offense.

In order for a team to put themselves in a position to consider them Super, they need to have depth when injuries occur to starters. Thus far, we've seen that the Packers have shown depth at WR without Davante Adams. The Packers offense was lethal without Jamaal Williams. Will Redmond rose to the occasion in place of Darnell Savage. BJ Goodson has played well as he's quickly been asked to learn the system as a replacement for Oren Burks. When Linsley went out, Lucas Patrick played exceptionally well. The one major hiccup: when Bulaga went out against Philly, it didn't appear as though the Packers had a worthwhile replacement. The depth of this team has shown Gutekunst as a shining star. He's compiled a roster that is thick with talent.

I'm really excited for Darnell Savage to return to this team.

It sure feels like the Packers will score a defensive touchdown soon.

Here's my weekly 2020 Mock Draft:

Round 1: Alaric Jackson, OT, Iowa.
Round 2: Kenneth Murray, ILB, Oklahoma.
Round 3: Brandon Jones, S, Texas.
Round 4: Leki Fotu, DL, Utah.
Round 5: Michael Divinty, ILB, LSU.
Round 6: Kendall Coleman, EDGE, Syracuse.
Round 6: Matt Bushman, TE, BYU.
Round 7: Luke Farrell, TE, Ohio State.
Round 7: Tyler Clark, DL, Georgia.
Round 7: Devin Duvernay, WR, Texas.

This week - it's the Chiefs. At Arrowhead. On Sunday Night. This is a statement game for the Packers. Thus far, the Packers are undefeated on the road. The Chiefs might be without their superstar at QB. The Packers must come out and play with intensity. Show the NFL world that they belong among the elite. And, with the strength within the NFC, the Packers need this one to continue to hold onto the lead in the NFC North over the 'queens.

The Chiefs are loaded with talent on offense. Tyreek Hill is as dynamic as it gets in the league. Every time he touches the ball, he's a threat to score a TD. Sammy Watkins is a physical possession WR. Mecole Hardman is a bright young talent at WR who is dangerous with the ball in his hands. Byron Pringle is a physical player and will win jump balls in traffic. At RB, Damien Williams is a playmaker on the edges. He sees the hole and hits it quickly. He's a good receiver out of the backfield as well. LeSean McCoy is still a gifted RB who makes defenders miss in the open field. Travis Kelce is among the best TE's in football. He dominates as both a blocker and a receiver. If Mahomes plays, this offense is as good as any offense in football. Without Mahomes, Andy Reid will be required to be the architect who drafts up open receivers for Matt Moore to move the team.

Defensively, the Chiefs aren't overly stout, but they do have a number of intriguing playmakers. Frank Clark has caused problems for the Packers in the past. Alex Okafor is a good rotational EDGE defender. Chris Jones absolutely dominates on the interior of the line. Anthony Hitchens has a nose for finding the football. Tyrann Mathieu remains a star in this league. He's a weapon on the blitz. He finds the football. Juan Thornhill is a rising star at Safety. The question marks come at CB. I'm a fan of Bashaud Breeland. I wanted him back in GB. But, he can be beaten. Charvarius Ward can be targeted. Kendall Fuller is a nice player, but he, too, can be taken advantage of.

This is a great test for Matt LaFleur. He'll be battling against a terrific playcaller in Andy Reid. It'll be interesting to see how both of these teams scheme.

I know Mahomes practiced on Wednesday, but I find it hard to believe that he'll be the starting QB this weekend. I'm guessing that it'll be Matt Moore as the QB. Moore is a disciplined veteran QB. Look for Reid to scheme to get Travis Kelce open on a number of out routes. Reid will also design play action passes to get Hill in man-to-man coverage deep down the field.

Look for Pettine to have Jaire follow Hill all over the field. King matches up with Watkins. It wouldn't surprise me to see T-Mon muscling up with Kelce. What T-Mon will lose in size, he'll make up for in mind. T-Mon might not be seeing the snaps that he's seen in the past, but he might be the most trusted defender that the Packers have to slow down TE's.

Regardless of who is playing QB, if the Packers can't get pressure, it'll be difficult to slow this offense down. The Packers defense must win the line of scrimmage. Look for Pettine to call a variety of inside blitzes to try and get the QB off of his spot.

If it's not play action, Reid will design plays that are quick hitting crossing routes and slants. He will want to get the ball out of the QB's hand in three seconds or less. Pettine must respond with man coverage.

I'd like to think that the interior of the Packers DL can match-up well with the interior of the Chiefs OL to slow down the run.

Offensively, look for the Packers to try and spread out the Chiefs out. If so, the Chiefs don't have the depth to man-up against LaFleur's trickery. The Chiefs secondary can't run with MVS. Hopefully, the Packers will target MVS deep down the field early in the game.

Expect Rodgers to hand to Jones on a couple of quick hitting run plays right at the edges of the Chiefs defense to help slow down the pass rush.

The Packers win both sides of the line of scrimmage. Bulaga and Bakhtiari control the perimeter of the line on offense. Clark and Lowry show up big on the interior of the defensive line.

MVS finds the end zone again this week.

Savage grabs an interception in his return to the field.

The Packers defense responds nicely.

My guess is that Mahomes doesn't play.

Packers 27.
Chiefs 16.

My Take -> Week 7

Greetings, G-Force.

What a victory! Mental fortitude at it's finest. A gutty performance. A cool confidence displayed throughout - even when things felt bleak. A never say die mentality. The reward was fulfilling. A 3-0 start in the Division puts the Packers in a good position from a tie breaker perspective. The Packers must not bask in this goodness. Instead, this team must continue to keep the foot on the gas pedal as the Division appears to be thick with talent.

As I write, I listen to the Grateful Dead's 5/19/74 show from Portland Memorial Coliseum. If you don't own this vinyl, look for it. It's a great spin. I sip a Myrcenary Double IPA from Odell. Presently, I drink this beer more than any other. It's 9.3%. It has a Tropical Hop feel. It goes down smoothly. It's fantastic.

Here are my quick vibes from last week:

Yes, this team has flaws. But, I absolutely love the 2019 Green Bay Packers.

When Brian Gutekunst drew up his offseason plan for recreating the Packers roster, he knew that Aaron Rodgers made all of his skill players better. So, he focused his attention on the physical nature of this team. Gutekunst’s emphasis on the trenches rather than the fantasy football approach towards roster construction helped deliver a massive Monday Night division victory. And, it certainly didn’t hurt that Rodgers lived up to his end of the equation with a band-aid collection of talent at WR and a slow moving, washed up TE as his targets.

It’s easy to criticize LaFleur because he’s still difficult to listen to in a press conference. It sounds like he’s really canned and has a lot of quirky transition statements. But man, I really like how he’s putting his stamp on this offense. Each week - its looking more like his offense rather than offenses of years past. He still has to work on the 3rd Quarter, but it’s developing nicely.

Pettine’s crew adjusted nicely. They were beaten early over the top, but responded by winning in the Red Zone. Pettine also altered his defensive approach by playing more aggressively in his approach to stop the run. He came with the run blitz. He added an extra DL on most early downs. He was rewarded as the defense played very well in the run game.

Aaron Rodgers is playing like he wants to win a Super Bowl. Badly. He's dialed in. He's focused. He's rejuvenated. And, he looks healthy.

So, this is what it feels like to be the beneficiary of poor officiating late in games? I’ll take it! For years, it’s felt like late-game officiating has gone against the Packers. The 98 playoffs, the Fail Mary, the ‘queens game last year and this years loss to the Eagles immediately come to mind. It’s nice to have the advantage come the Packers way.

Really happy to see the way Jaire responded after his poor showing in Dallas. His hustle play on the first play from scrimmage saved the Packers 4 points.

The Smith Bros. making splash plays and celebrating together will never get old. Their spirit is infectious! What a beautiful buzz!

Kevin King got off to a rough start, but he kept fighting. He responded well. Stayed focused and eventually was up to the task on a number of crucial plays in the 3rd and 4th Quarter.

Aaron Jones will have better days in the future.

Another phenomenal game by Bryan Bulaga.

Corey Linsley and Elgton Jenkins completely dominated the line of scrimmage. Jenkins looks like an absolute stud in the run game. He is fluid getting to the second level.

Allen Lazard throwing heavyweight punches to help him pick up 6 yards after the catch was the type of fight that you love to see. He was a battering bull on a mission seeking contact. Lazard provided the spark that the Packers needed.

Watching Rodgers on Monday Night reminded me of watching Favre in 1996 as he was tossing Touchdowns to Don Beebe and Terry Mickens.

Don't let the questionable officiating calls ruin the enjoyment that LaFleur is bringing to this offense. I love the way he's using MVS. He's sending him on crossing routes. He's sending him deep down the field. He's sending him on a wide variety of sweeps, often in a disguise fashion.

Speaking of MVS, it was great to see him hauling his third reception of more than 30 yards on the year. I'm hoping to see him grab 10 of them this year.

Marcedes Lewis has been a great surprise this year.

Fantastic game, Jamaal Williams. He brought momentum. His spark light a fire in this offense. It was great to see him with the ball in his hands again.

Keep your head up, Shep.

With Ibraheim Campbell soon to be in the mix, I'm hoping that he can step into the ILB role next to Martinez when Pettine decides to go small.

Rodgers showed great faith in Lazard on the 35 yard TD pass. On the play before, Lazard was unable to haul in a difficult catch in traffic. But, Rodgers came back to him. It was great to see Rodgers showing confidence in a receiver who has been buried on the depth chart.

The Jaire pass break-up on the final third down play was sensational. He fought to the finish to save the defense.

The Smith Bros. third down impact cannot be overstated. They've been unbelievable!

Dean Lowry was a monster in the run game.

Hope G-Mo is healthy enough to quickly return. While he's been a disappointment thus far this year, he's a good talent and this team needs him.

Goodson brought a physical approach to the defense.

It's so fun to see Rodgers scrambling for first down yardage on big plays.

Fackrell continues to get close. It really feels like he has a high impact game on the horizon.

Billy Turner has gotten better each and every week.

The Packers got the ball back with 6:46 to play. Trailing by 2. They went 14 plays for 77 yards. They ate up the entire 6:46 on the clock and won on a FG at the buzzer. That's championship football.

The Mason Crosby Lambeau Leap. Delightful!

What happened to Jimmy Graham's athleticism? He was among the most lethal TE targets that I'd ever seen. Especially in the Red Zone. Now? He's slow and can't seem to get off of the ground. He's only 32 years old. I can't figure it out.

At this stage, teams are showing no respect for the Packers Kickoff units. They're returning the ball on kicks that are deep into the end zone. They're challenging the Packers units to prove that they can tackle. And, the opposition is intentionally kicking short to the Packers and still preventing the Packers from getting to the 25 yard line.

I'm really happy that Jace Sternberger has been designated to return. While it's highly unlikely that he'll make an impact over the next 4-6 weeks, I do feel that he'll bring an added dimension to this offense in the 2019 Season. It'll be important for him to find a connection with Rodgers. If given the opportunity, he'll bring more athleticism as a receiver than the Packers are currently getting from their TE group.

Take note: the Packers won a divisional game in prime time with a banged up MVS , Lazard, Shepherd and Kumerow as the WRs when they were down 9 with less than 10 minutes to play. I love you, Aaron Rodgers!

When the Packers got the ball back with 12:17 to play and down 9, I had my doubts. But, 7 plays and 79 yards later, while only taking 3:14 off of the clock and the Packers were in business. That was an efficient offensive display.

The defense bent early. But, they didn't break. They also responded after being put in multiple tough positions throughout the 2nd half. Pettine's unit responded brilliantly as the game wore on.

If the Packers win on Sunday, it’d also become a great day for Scoreboard watching. What an awesome Sunday for the NFL. MN at DET, BALT at SEA, NO at CHI, PHI at DALLAS, RAMS at ATL. Those could all be great games that we have our eyes on. Meanwhile, the Packers better take care of their own business.

My good buddy, Craig Forrestal, has been published on the Fanspeak Draft Boards under the NFL Draft Diamonds name. I used his Big Board to create my mock draft this week:

Round 1: Javon Kinlaw, DL, South Carolina.
Round 2: Ceedee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma.
Round 3: Raequan Williams, DL, Michigan State.
Round 4: Colby Parkinson, TE, Stanford.
Round 5: Richard Lecounte, S, Georgia.
Round 6: Michael Divinty, LB, LSU.
Round 6: Jeff Thomas, WR, Miami.
Round 7: Daelin Hayes, EDGE, ND.
Round 7: Lamar Jackson, CB, Nebraska.
Round 7: Luke Farrell, TE, Ohio State.

This week - it's the Raiders coming to Lambeau. Consider this one a must win. They're entering a tough 2nd half of the season schedule. With that, they must be able to take care of Lambeau against an inferior opponent. Injured or not, the Packers have more talent than the Raiders and they must be able to win this game.

Offensively, the Raiders have been running the ball through the tackles. Josh Jacobs looks like the real deal. He's also very good as a receiving option out of the backfield. When Derek Carr takes care of the football, he's dangerous. But, he's prone to turnovers. The Packers must take advantage of their opportunities to steal the ball. Darren Waller is a fantastic weapon at TE. The Raiders WR's shouldn't pose a significant threat to the Packers secondary. Tyrell Williams might not play and he's their best option. Zay Jones has underachieved as a pro. Dwayne Harris is dangerous with the ball in his hands, but he's a rough route runner. I like Hunter Renfrow in the slot, but he's solely a possession receiver. Trevor Davis will undoubtedly be motivated to show well against his old team. The Raiders calling card has been the nasty on the OL. Gabe Jackson and Trent Brown have manned up on the right side of the line. Former 1st round pick, Kolton Miller, is developing nicely at LT. And, good ol' Richie Incognito is still a bruiser at LG.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Raiders have a lot of young talent. Arden Key and Clelin Ferrell are loaded with skill and still developing as every down NFL players. Johnathan Hankins is well traveled. He's a try hard vet. I like Josh Mauro as a rotational DE. Maurice Hurst could eventually be a considered a steal of the 2018 Draft. I love his game. Tahir Whitehead is a playmaking coverage LB. I'd like to think that the Packers could do damage against the Raiders secondary. Nevin Lawson is prone to penalties. Lamarcus Joyner is an aggressive Safety, but he can be beaten on the double move. Karl Joseph has had big play, hard-hitting moments, but he can be vulnerable to giving up the big play. Daryl Worley works hard at CB. He's consistent, but he isn't a game changing CB. Gareon Conley is still developing at CB. He'll make an occasional play, but he can be attacked. If the Packers have Adams, MVS and Allison; I'd envision a big offensive output.

This game will be an interesting challenge for the Packers DL. Gruden will undoubtedly challenge the Packers DL in the run game. And, after it, he'll go to play action to try and find the Packers in single coverage on the outside. They'll also look for Waller on crossing routes and Renfrow on quick out routes out of the slot.

The Raiders will to try to get Josh Jacobs 20 touches on Sunday.

The Raiders will consistently test the Packers ability to cover the TE. Waller will get a multitude of targets.

If the Packers can get out to an early lead, I can't see the Raiders coming back. So, it'll be important for the Packers to not let the Raiders stick around.

Expect LaFleur to call a double move to MVS on a deep route early in the game. He'll be looking for a big play to get this offense started.

Then, LaFleur stays patient. He stays committed to the run game. He finds Lazard on a comeback watch out of play action.

Assuming Adams can't play, look for LaFleur to move Lazard around the field. You'll see Lazard in the slot. You'll see him split wide left. You'll see him split wide to the perimeter on the Right. He's a big target that Rodgers seems to trust.

Look for Kevin King to grab another interception. The Packers defense forces two turnovers this week.

I'm going to keep banging the Fackrell drum until he has a 2-sack game. It's coming, I can feel it! He's single blocked when he's on the field. And, he's getting close. But, Fackrell, you have to finish, young man! Make this the week!

The Packers grab an early lead. They keep the offense moving with excitement all game as Aaron Jones gets unleashed, once again.

Packers 30.
Raiders 16.

Go Pack Go!
