My Take -> Week 3

Greetings, G-Force.

2-0. Two divisional wins. 85 points. More than 1,000 yards of offense. Game changing plays on defense. Crosby and Scott are kicking with perfection. There’s a lot to be excited about.

As I write, I listen to the Talking Heads “Remain In Light” album. I sip a Port Brewing Mongo. Love this double IIPA. And, the price is right. The price of a IIPA has become extraordinary. So, it’s refreshing to find a quality hopped up 4-pack of 16 oz cans for less than $9.

My quick vibes over the last week:

Matt LaFleur has the offense in rhythm. The crossing route is back. The run first offense has freed up the passing game. He’s stacking three WR’s to one side of the field and sending the outside WR underneath to create a natural pick. It seems that every single time, the outside WR is running free across the field and giving Rodgers an easy target. At some point, that’s going to turn into a big play on the outside as teams are going to overplay the middle of the field.

Aaron Rodgers is dialed in. He’s comfortable. He’s in command of this offense. He’s seeing the field really well. He’s patient. He’s taking what the defense gives him.

Aaron Jones is among the best playmakers in the NFL. He’s developed into a dynamite receiving option. As a runner, his vision continues to impress.

Elgton Jenkins is quickly becoming an All Pro quality OG. I already hope that he starts for this team for the next 10 years.

Allen Lazard has become an extremely trustworthy #2 option at WR.

This team passed an early season test when they took the ball down 14-3. They stayed calm. They stayed confident. They stayed within the game plan. They ran the ball to the weak side. They used play action. They worked the crossing route. Rodgers stuck with the underneath routes. The results were scintillating.

When Brian Gutekunst signed Preston Smith to a blockbuster deal on March 12, 2019; I guarantee that he didn’t envision seeing Smith dropping into zone coverage. Gutekunst signed Preston to have him pin his ears back and to get to the QB from the EDGE. Gutekunst paid $13.5 million in 2020 to be a disruptive pass rusher. Gutekunst invested 1st round draft pick capital in Gary to rush on the opposite side of Preston. Gutekunst is paying Za’Darius $17.25 million in 2020 to be among the most dominant 3rd down interior pass rushers in the NFL. It should be noted that Gary appears to have the ability to slide inside as well, but in principle, Gutekunst wants to rush 4 on 3rd down. He’s designed this team to have an elite 4 man rush on 3rd down. He doesn’t want to have to blitz to get pressure. Gutekunst likes his chances with the Smith Bros., Gary and either Clark or Keke coming on the rush on an obvious passing down. Pettine should trust his dynamic duo at CB to play man coverage on the outside. Pettine should trust Sullivan to play man coverage in the slot. Gutekunst signed Christian Kirksey as he was an upgrade over Blake in coverage. Pettine should not be blitzing Kirksey, he should be playing man coverage. I realize that it’s early in the season and that Pettine has to put stuff on film for later in the year. I realize that he’s trying to create disguise. I realize that they didn’t have much of a training camp. I realize that there wasn’t preseason games to get the kinks out. But, in short, I think that the more vanilla this defense plays, the better off they’ll be, as long as they’re healthy. He should play as simplified of a defense as possible. Similar to what the 49ers did last year. You know what SF was going to do. Their players were simply better and they won their 1 on 1 matchups. If healthy, I think this defense has a chance to be a disruptive defense, if they’re utilized properly. I wholeheartedly believe that this defense has the potential to be a high powered pass defense.

On the other hand, unless Adrian Amos elevates his game as a run stopper, this defense is not built to be a forceful run stopping defense. It’s designed to test the patience of the opposition’s OC. If the opposition sticks with the run, Gutekunst must think this defense is constructed to bend, but not break. Gutekunst must also feel that he hasn’t enough talent to draw multiple holding penalties, to force fumbles, to intercept passes and to get sacks. In theory, each of those scenarios should result in the defense getting off of the field. Pettine must trust his starters to win 1 on 1 battles.

Love the early game LaFleur aggressiveness. It was telling when he went for it on 4th down. He believes in his system.

I’ll never grow tired of seeing Big Bob Tonyan catching TD’s!

MVS showing toughness!!

Rodgers connected with 8 different receivers, including himself. And, had Jace hung on, he’d have hit 9. That’s highly remarkable.

Matt LaFleur has absolutely trashed two divisional opponents who have Head Coaches that pride themselves on playing tough, hard-nosed defense.

Monster play by Chandon Sullivan to make it a 3-score game!

Krys Barnes has shown enough over the first two weeks of the season to heighten my interest.

I keep waiting for Dean Lowry to take the next step in his career. One play, he’s extending his arms, gaining leverage and getting a push. On the next, he’s absolutely swallowed.

Riveting to see the defense get the 3-and-out to get the ball back to the offense before the half.

I like Keke’s heartbeat. Plays with desire. Big flaw: he’s lined up too far off of the ball.

Plainly stated, the Packers need better safety play. Turning the clock back to a Peprah and MD Jennings style of play!

You know the depth of the DL is bleak when your heart skips a beat after Tyler Lancaster goes down with injury. This team needs Snacks in the worst way.

Catch the ball, Jace.

This week - it’s the Saints. It’ll be a major test for the Packers on both sides of the ball. The Lions and ‘queens both unnecessarily went away from the running game. Sean Payton will be patient. He will test the Packers run defense for 60 minutes. If the Packers can’t stop the run, the could be in loads of trouble.

It’s Brees vs Rodgers. On Sunday Night Football. Against two questionable defenses. You’d expect a shootout. But, without the two top WR’s on the field, I envision a game in which each time emphasizes ball control and time of possession. Look for both teams to want to establish the run game early. I anticipate that we will see multiple 5 minute scoring drives from both teams.

The Saints will pound Murray, Montgomery and Kamara. They’ll get Hill involved. They’ll also go play action and get the ball to Jared Cook.

The difference in the game will be turnovers. I think the Packers will force two of them. At some point, the Packers will get in Brees’ face and a turnover will follow. Look for Preston Smith to make a play.

Once again, Aaron Jones is the best player on the field.

Let's make sure we are appreciating Matt LaFleur as much as we should be.

My Take -> Week 2

Greetings, G-Force.

1-0! An impressive, leave-no-doubt victory over the 'queens from Minnesota. In the Dome. The last time the Packers traveled to Minnesota, the crowd left in silence as the Packers clinched the Division in Prime Time. This time, the silence was the same, but there were no fans in the Stadium.

As I write, I just finished a Mongo DIPA. It's a deliciously refreshing 8% West Coast Hop bomb. I'm moving onto Bourbon and Ginger Beer. Settled in on the Makers Mark 46 and Barritt's Ginger Beer. I'm listening to Peter Tosh's "No Nuclear War" album. Tosh brings enhanced soul to his voice throughout this 1987 release. This was Tosh's last album. He won a Grammy for the album. Tragically, he was murdered on September 11th in the same year.

Here are my quick vibes of the last week:

Thus far, Matt LaFleur absolutely owns Mike Zimmer. LaFleur is not only 3-0 against Zimmer, but Zimmer has been unable to slow down LaFleur's offense.

I saw this tweet from Ross Uglem: "Matt LaFleur's last 14 drives against Mike Zimmer (working in reverse) are victory formation, TD, TD, TD, Punt (when MVS dropped the wide open crossing route), TD, TD, FG, Downs on the 1 yard line after the Adams dropped TD, FG, Victory Formation, Punt (running out the clock), TD, Punt, TD." That's absolutely unbelievable.

While the Packers offense looked unstoppable, I'm wondering if the Packers offense is that good or if the 'queens defense is that questionable. You can't cover Adams with a rookie CB. Adams will win every time. The 'queens had no pass rush. They had no semblance of CB play. So, I'm going to hold my full-fledged optimism for now, but it was fun to see this offense flourish in a crucial division game.

Aaron Rodgers was in MVP form. He was accurate. He was cerebral. He was quick to hit the check down. He hit 7 different receivers. He was in mid-season form.

Davante Adams is a dynamite football player. Fluid as ever as a route runner. Sensational to see him tie Don Hutson's record with 14 receptions.

Allen Lazard is a legitimate #2 receiver. 4 catches on 4 targets. 15.8 yards per catch. A fierce blocker. Tough to tackle after the catch.

MVS. A mixed bag of goods. 4 catches. 6 targets. 2 absolutely brutal drops. The TD before the half was beautiful and had me feeling renewed vigor for him. I hope he can gain confidence. He doesn't trust himself right now.

Deguara showed well in his rookie debut.

Bakhtiari was a Superstar.

Kudos to Jenkins for his versatility.

Linsley was dominant on the interior.

Aaron Jones is a difference maker. He moves so much differently than the other backs on the roster. He appears primed for a big year. It'll be important for the Packers to use load maintenance on him early in the year to keep him healthy for the stretch run.

Tyler Ervin is going to be a fun toy for LaFleur to use all year. 4 touches. 48 yards. He's dangerous.

Jaire Alexander. Playmaker. He singlehandedly flipped this game.

Kevin King stepping up! Loved the open field tackle. And, the stop on the following 4th down.

Krys Barnes. Is he a name to know in 2020? Sure showed impressively in Week 1.

Za'Darius Smith gobbling QB's on 3rd down will never get old.

Take less steps in your rush, Rashan Gary. Just drive forward.

I'm going to reserve any potential criticisms of players on this roster until I see more out of them.

This week - it's the Lions. If the Packers can grab victory, a 2-0 start with two Division wins would be a sublime start to the 2020 football season.

The Packers will have to win the line of scrimmage. Adrian Peterson can still rumble. Matt Stafford can still whip the football around. TJ Hockenson is a big, bruising TE who will give the Packers problems. Danny Amendola is a slot WR who will frustrate. Marvin Jones has had big plays against the Packers in the past. Quintez Cephus was talented at Wisconsin. He'll challenge the Packers secondary.

While on offense, the Packers will have to block Trey Flowers. Jarrad Davis is a beast at ILB. The Lions secondary is banged up. They shouldn't be able to cover the Packers on the outside.

Davante Adams is going to have another field day. The Lions won't be able to cover him.

Protect Rodgers and I expect the Packers to score 30 points.

Get in Stafford's face and turnovers will follow.

The Packers should win by three scores, but without Kenny Clark, I worry about their ability to stop the run. So, Detroit will keep it close. They might even have a shot at winning.

But, in the end, the Rodgers to Adams combination will be too much.

Points -- for both teams -- should come in abundance.

My Take -> Week 1

Greetings, G-Force. I hope that you are healthy, happy and safe. The 2020 season is upon us. And, I’m going to do my best to carry the blog forward. I’m happy to have football back. I hope that it brings a sense of normalcy to my Sunday’s. As I write, I listen to the Toots & the Maytals 1973 classic; “In The Dark.” A legendary album. I was absolutely gutted to hear about Toots’ passing. The 2015 Crooked Stave Origins continues to carry a robust sour punch. It’s a flavor explosion! Candidly, I’m not as close with the 2020 team as I’d like to be. So, my initial take won’t be as thorough as past years. I hope that changes as I form more thoughts. But, without preseason football, my views are persuaded by what I’ve read or heard from others. On paper, I’m not enamored with the depth on this roster. I see issues are CB, Tackle, and ILB. It’s shocking to me that Veldheer and TMon aren’t in the roster. I’m not sold on the WR depth either as I’m not convinced that either MVS or ESB has taken the next step. This team also needs Keke to advance his game or else the DL might have depth concerns as well. To kick off the season, the Packers travel to Minnesota to take on the ‘queens. It’ll be odd to have limited, controlled noise in the dome. I anticipate that the Packers will be able to function their offense as they’d like. However, I can’t say that I expect the Packers to be in rhythm early on in the season. Look for the Packers to get Tyler Ervin into the open field. Look for the Packers to turn to Allen Lazard in abundance. Look for the Packers to attempt to pound the ball at the heart of the Minnesota Defensive Line. Look for Jaire to try and get in Thielen’s head early in the game. The Packers have to find a way to slow down Dalvin Cook. I’m not sure that I see a scenario in which they’re able to do that. There’s no reason for Minnesota to not run the ball at least 35 times. The game will be decided by a turnover. Have a hunch that Savage grabs a pick to save the day. The Packers defense bends often. My Take -> Packers Mock Draft

Greetings, G-Force.

I hope this writing finds you and yours both healthy and safe. Wild times, we are living. Unfortunately, I did not have time to write a draft blog this year. Instead, I’m just going to post my prediction for this years draft.

As I write, I listen to Bob Marley’s Legend album. I’ve been mostly listening to Marley and the Beatles through most of the quarantine. I’m presently sipping an Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. And, by sipping, I mean slugging.

It’s my firm belief that the Packers should trade down. Gutekunst needs to add bodies to this roster. In a perfect world, he’d select a minimum of 13 players. I’d try to maneuver to stack 5 picks in rounds 2-4. The Packers currently have 3. If Gutekunst feels the need to trade up, I hope it’s for Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU.

My Take -> NFC Championship

Greetings, G-Force.

These are days that we will remember. Forever. These days are special. A year ago, this franchise looked like it was on the brink of entering the doldrums. Today, thanks to brilliant work by Mark Murphy, Brian Gutekunst, Russ Ball, Matt LaFleur, Mike Pettine and Aaron Rodgers; this franchise is revived. This franchise is alive and well. The franchise has an arrow that is pointed skyward. I couldn’t be prouder to be born and raised in Titletown, U.S.A. It means more to us. And, yes, after the victory against Seattle, I was emotionally tearful. Harness in all of this energy. It’s why we root for the Green Bay Packers.

As I write, I listen to Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread” album. I feel comfortable saying that this album is arguably Marley's most underrated album. Kind of like the 2019 version of the Green Bay Packers, a really under appreciated piece of production. I drink a Weldwerks Peanut Butter Cup Imperial Stout. It’s creamy delicious. 9.7%. With a robust peanut butter and chocolate flavor. Dank!

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

When Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers got together to draw up the game plan, I’m convinced that the first thing they agreed upon was to get the ball to Aaron Jones and Davante Adams 30 times. Jones and Adams are top tier players. They need to touch the ball in order to move the ball against elite teams. LaFleur and Rodgers did a remarkable job of getting the ball to them early and often.

Pettine was patient and trusted his 3 and 4 man rushes to get home. The Packers kept winning their individual match-ups at the line of scrimmage and Wilson was uncomfortable all game long.

2019 has not been easy on the eyes for Aaron Rodgers. But, the playoff game showed that Rodgers is still loaded with talent. He was sensational. He was in control. He was dynamite all game long. The touchdown passes to Adams were absolutely beautiful.

Jimmy Graham was clutch on third down.

Tyler Ervin has been a terrific addition. He’s eye candy as a decoy. He’s a threat with the ball in his hands. He’s explosive. He’s dynamic. He must be accounted for every time he is on the field.

I loved seeing Davante Adams on underneath crossing routes with Rodgers bootlegging to his right.

On the opening drive, the Packers went 75 yards on 8 plays. They took 4:23 off of the clock. Jones and Adams combined to touch the ball 5 times.

With the score 7-3, the Packers took over at their own 25. The Packers needed to regain momentum. The Packers went 9 plays and 75 yards in 5:39. Adams and Jones combined to touch the ball 8 times.

With the score 14-3, the Packers looked to take complete control of the game after a missed Seattle FG. The Packers ate up 4:13 off the clock. They went 60 yards on 11 plays to make it 21-3. Adams and Jones combined to touch the ball 6 times.

After the half, Seattle looked to regain momentum as they cut the lead to 21-10. How’d the Packers respond? 5 plays. 75 yards. 2:35 off of the clock and a Packers TD. Adams and Jones combined to touch it 3 times.

It felt like everyone in the building thought that LaFleur was going to call play action on 1st down to start the game. Instead, he handed it to Jones. Jones burst forward for 23 yards. That was a big mental win for LaFleur.

I could watch the third down passes to Graham and Adams on repeat for years to come.

Yes, Za’Darius, you were snubbed. Another tremendous game by Za’Darius.

I’m so happy for Preston Smith. He was clearly hobbled in December. He didn’t have his burst off of the line. Pettine started to drop him in coverage. But, Preston was fantastic. He looked rejuvenated. The bye treated him well. Preston dominated the line of scrimmage. His 3rd down sack thwarted the Seahawks comeback and gave Rodgers the ball back with a chance to seal the deal.

Jaire Alexander alters games. Even when his name isn’t called. He’s a game changer.

When Amos and Savage are on the field together, I feel 100% confident in the security of our secondary.

Strong performance by Kevin King. I wish he would’ve held onto the interception, but nonetheless, he was tough in coverage and in the run game.

Kenny Clark is an absolute beast. He dominated the line of scrimmage. Loved his effort.

Oren Burks was a demon on special teams.

Great to see Dean Lowry getting his hands up to disrupt passing lanes.

Chandon Sullivan is a really good football player.

G-Mo made a 3rd down play!

Tyler Lancaster showed good hustle. He gets underneath his blocker and gets a push.

This team needs Allen Lazard to be healthy.

If the Packers are going to win the Super Bowl, they’re going to need MVS to make a splash play or two deep down the field. At some point, someone other than Jones and Adams has to make a game changing play. It feels like Lazard, Ervin and Kumerow are all capable. But, MVS has the most big play potential.

Tip of the cap to Jared Veldheer. He had a really strong performance, if you consider the circumstances.

Matt LaFleur went with many 2-TE sets. A wide variety of combinations, too. Jace, Tonyan, Lewis and Graham all played extensively. He did so to create 1 on 1 match-ups on the outside. It was evident that Seattle wanted to stop the run. They also wanted to double cover Adams as much as possible. But, when LaFleur went with 2-TE sets, he put himself in position to win with play action passes to Adams. LaFleur was dialed in.

I’m a big fan of Jace Sternberger. He’s an aggressive blocker. He is a fighter. I’m holding out hope that he has a crucial reception on the horizon.

Jake Kumerow was not in peak performance as a receiver, but his block on Clowney to get Jones into the end zone was all of the goodness that defines the epic nature of this team. Kumerow was also rock solid on special teams.

Superfly to see Za’Darius stunting to the inside.

Grateful that Amos knocked down the Hail Mary pass at the end of the half.

The locker room inside the 2019 Green Bay Packers team just feels different. There’s unification. There’s togetherness. They’re creating their own destiny with a belief in one another. By definition, they fit the word “team” and that togetherness goes beyond words.

The Aaron Rodgers QB sneak was gorgeous.

Aaron Jones has an uncanny ability to find his way to the goal line.

Have to admit: I was stunned when Jamaal Williams didn’t get to the 1st down marker when he was in the open field.

I really like seeing Will Redmond as a gunner on special teams. I'd like to have him back in 2020.

It was a true treat to see the Lambeau Gods blowing a FG wide right.

Lambeau Field looked to be in prime form. If you were in attendance, thank you!

Lil’ Wayne called it one of the dopest days of his life. Pop Tarts!

Take all of this energy in. Savor it. Who knows when we’ll be in this position again. I cannot get enough of this team.

The Canadian Football League had 54 All-Stars in 2019. Two of them have signed futures contracts in Green Bay: Reggie Begelton and DeShaun Amos. I love the way Gutekunst constructs the bottom portion of his roster. Non-homer take: I'm surprised that Gutekunst didn't win the Executive of the Year award. He quickly revamped a Packers roster from a faltering crop to a fairly deep and talented group.

For this weeks 2020 Packers mock draft, I used my own current draft rankings as projections. I’m a long ways from being prepared for the Draft, but I’m making small progress. Eventually, I'd like to have 2 WR's drafted as I imagine a mini overhaul at the WR position this offseason. Here goes:

Round 1: Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame.
Round 2: Rashard Lawrence, DL, LSU.
Round 3: Tyler Johnson, WR, Minnesota.
Round 4: Dane Jackson, CB, Pittsburgh.
Round 5: Colton McKivitz, OT, Dub-V.
Round 6: Robert Hunt, OT, Louisiana.
Round 6: Alton Robinson, EDGE, Syracuse.
Round 7: Evan Weaver, ILB, Cal.
Round 7: Sean McKeon, TE, Michigan.
Round 7: Logan Wilson, ILB, Wyoming.

This week - it’s the team from Green Bay traveling to the Bay Area. The winner will carry the NFC Crown and earn a trip to the 305 for a chance to win the Lombardi Trophy. Let that sink in for a moment. To repeat myself, a year ago, the Packers finished in last place in the NFC NORTH. They were 1-4-1 in the Division. This year, the Packers won the Division. They went 6-0 in the NFC NORTH. They are one win away from playing in the Super Bowl. I will cherish every snap of the game this weekend. Vibes up, Packers fans!

It’s easy to reflect on the last time these two teams played and to think that it’ll be really tough for the Packers to compete. But, I must remind you that the last time they played, there were two highly questionable officiating calls that put the 49ers in position to take a 10-0 lead. And, at that point, the Packers became one-dimensional - as LaFleur has become all year when he’s trailed by 2-scores - and the 49ers simply pinned their ears back and attacked Rodgers. It also didn’t help that Bulaga didn’t play. Alex Light proved to be incapable of blocking the 49ers vaunted defensive front. Now, in no way am I blaming the officiating for the loss in November, I’m simply stating that it’s possible the teams are much more evenly matched than the clobbering we witnessed in November. It’s also fair to assume that the Packers never mentally recovered from the 10-0 deficit. With that said, once again, if the Packers fall behind early in this contest, the game could get late very early in the game.

San Francisco has an abundance of offensive weapons. Deebo Samuel is only getting better. Emmanuel Sanders is still a reliable target. Kendrick Bourne has had a thrill for the dramatics. Richie James is a dangerous with the ball in his hands. James is also a lethal returner. At RB, the 49ers have a trio of stars in Coleman, Mostert and Breida. At TE, the 49ers have the best one in the game, George Kittle. Levine Toilolo is also a good blocking TE and a reliable receiving option. Jimmy Garoppolo has been very good, but he's prone to making mistakes. He often misses his targets behind the receiver, which might give the Packers a chance to jump a crossing route. The 49ers OL is beastly. Laken Tomlinson, Mike Person, and Ben Garland have eaten up blockers on the interior. Mike McGlinchey has developed into a legitimate star at RT. Kyle Juszczyk is a sneaky weapon at FB. He must be accounted for.

Defensively, the 49ers apply an abundance of pressure. They do so by only rushing 4 players at a time. They're front 4 is so good that they don't have to blitz. And, because of their depth, they're able to rotate and keep everyone fresh. Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner have immense length. They not only eat up runners and put pressure on the QB, but they disrupt passing lanes. Nick Bosa has been elite. Dee Ford is healthy and adding high level pass rushing skills. Solomon Thomas might not be living up to his 1st round draft pick status, but he's still a very good rotational player. Sheldon Day is also disruptive. At LB, the 49ers struck it rich in the last two drafts with Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner. Kwon Alexander has returned from injury. He's a stud. In the secondary, Richard Sherman is still an A-level talent. Other than that, I feel like the 49ers secondary has played better than they actually are. I'd like to think that Emmanuel Moseley can be attacked, but Moseley keeps playing great football. When he plays, Ahkello Witherspoon can be beaten. K'Waun Williams has been great as a slot CB. He's shocked me with his slot skills. He jams and runs. He plays smart football. Jimmie Ward has offered over the top help across from Sherman. Jaquiski Tartt continues to play very well. Better than I'd expect him to. Because of the pressure that their front 4 applies on the QB, the 49ers can scheme to give deep safety help on nearly every play. And, since Sherman is still playing at an elite level, they're often able to give Moseley help over the top, so he sits on the underneath routes. They have a fantastic defensive set up.

The Packers must come out with a fierce intensity. Ready to attack. With full blown aggressiveness on both sides of the line of scrimmage. In order to win, the Packers are not only going to have to protect Rodgers, but they’ll also have to slow down the SF run game. They’ll probably also have to win the turnover battle.

I’ve always respected the Minnesota run defense. It’s wild to think that SF scored 27 points against Minnesota on only 19 passes. Garoppolo only completed 11 passes. SF ran the ball right at the heart of the Minnesota defense with very little misdirection. They were more physical. They punished the normally tenacious front 7 of the Minnesota defense with 47 rushing attempts. That’s crazy to consider.

I don’t expect Shanahan to run the ball 47 times this week, but I do envision a 50/50 run/pass split. It’ll be vital for the Packers defense to win first down.

Shanahan is terrific at devising an initial script. LaFleur has been very good as well. The 1st Quarter of this game is telling. I really hope that the Packers play defense to start the game. Get off of the field. Hand the ball to Rodgers with a chance to score 1st. Then, get the ball to start the 3rd Quarter. If the Packers can keep it to a 3-point game over the course of the 1st Quarter, I really like the Packers chances as both teams will settle down from the initial adrenaline rush. The Packers just have to survive the 1st Quarter. Especially the 1st 10-12 minutes. Let the initial rush of the train roll by. Let things calm down.

Once again, the Packers look to get the ball to Jones and Adams in abundance. I expect them to combine to touch it at least 25 times. The Packers will also look to slow the pace of the game down. They'll want to limit the possessions in the game in an effort to mellow the crowd's impact.

The Super Smith Bros. make another major impact. They're bringing their axe's. Gonna chop down trees. And, fight the 49ers OL.

Kenny Clark, Lancaster and Lowry duke it out with fever against the brute SF front to limit SF's run game.

With the 49ers looking to stop the run and clouding Admas, LaFleur will have to design ways to free up others as well. I fully anticipate Tyler Ervin making a big play down the sidelines as a receiver. I also expect MVS to get a shot deep down the field. Look for Rodgers to connect with MVS. I'm also expecting to see a play action pass to Jace down the seam.

The Packers defense shows up in mighty fashion. They force two turnovers. Jaire grabs an interception on a pass that's thrown behind Sanders on a crossing route.

Rodgers protects the ball all game long and delivers a late TD drive to grab the lead.

Once again, as they've done all year, the defense rises to the occasion to get the late stop. The Packers are going to the Super Bowl!

The NFL loves drama. First, it was the Packers beating the Seahawks in a great outside-of-the-division rivalry. Over the last 20 years, since Holmgren joined the Seahawks, the two teams have been linked. Then, it is the Packers taking on the 49ers for the 8th playoff battle over the last 25 years. And, when Packers win, they'll likely play the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. It'd be a rematch of Super Bowl I in the 100th year of the NFL. Oh, the story lines.

My Take -> Divisional Playoffs

Greetings, G-Force.

Sativa-like sensations billowed 5th Ave in Brooklyn, NY as Mason Crosby nailed the game winning FG to secure a 1st round bye for the Packers. I was in NYC to see Phish at MSG and Crosby's kick brought euphoria to the soul. These are days that we must cherish. 13-3. Division champs. #2 seed. Leggo!

As I write, I’m listening to Yonder Mountain String Band’s Mountain Tracks Vol 2. This 2002 gem of a live release really has me missing Jeff Austin. I’ve been dealing with a light strep throat/post influenza/early pneumonia battle, so I’m unfortunately without a beer by my side. So, if my tone is different, I apologize, in advance.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

Plain and simple, Packers fans: RISE UP! This one is for those of you that are fortunate enough to be in attendance. Off your ass. On your feet. For 60 minutes.

Cheering for the 2019 version of the Green Bay Packers is unlike any version of the Packers that I’ve ever seen. We’re used to seeing elite QB play, questionable defensive play and heartbreaking losses late in games. Today, while Aaron Rodgers is still capable of being elite and has been at times this year, he hasn’t been elite over the course of a 16-game season. Today, we’re watching a defense that knows how to win games unlike any team I’ve seen in past years. This defense knows how to get off of the field in the 4th Quarter. This defense knows how to force a turnover when this team needs it the most. This defense gets pressure on the QB. This defense is selfless. This defense is about the team result. They believe in one another. This defense is capable of carrying the Packers to the Super Bowl. And, because of the defense’s approach, the Packers have consistently won close contests. Consider this: the Packers were 8-1 in one-score games. In most of those games, the defense stepped up with major stops in the 4th Quarter.

For many years, I’ve listened to Packers fans talk with envy over the Seahawks, Bears and ‘queens ability to win games in ugly fashion. For many years, those franchises have known how to steal victories from the jaws of defeat. In 2019, the Green Bay Packers have that trait. They’re going to fight for 60 minutes. They’re going to be tenacious. For some, it’ll make you think that this team isn’t very good. You’re wrong. They’re excellent. They know how to win. And, they can beat you in a wide variety of ways. As fans, we must embrace this team. They’re winners. They’re just winning in a fashion that we’re not accustomed to watching and really, it feels like we don’t know how to cheer for this style of football. It’s foreign to us. My advice: just give it all of the positive energy that you can muster.

Now, we must hope that Aaron Rodgers gets hot. Just like he was in the month of October. If we can get that version of Aaron Rodgers to lead the Packers offense throughout the playoffs, look out. This Packers team is an October 2019 version of Aaron Rodgers away from being a Super Bowl Champion. Yes, I firmly believe that. This defense will pressure the QB. This defense will force turnovers. Mason Crosby will be reliable. JK Scott will be trustworthy. Tyler Ervin will make an impact in the return game. The OL will offer time. This team needs Aaron Rodgers to return to his normally accurate self.

This week – it’s the Seahawks traveling to Titletown, U.S.A. in the Divisional Playoffs. The winner earns a trip to the NFC Championship. The Packers and Seahawks have established a great out-of-division rivalry.

The Seahawks have two really talented WR’s in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Metcalf has been much better than I expected him to be. Lockett continues to improve each and every year. Russell Wilson is on his way to having a Hall of Fame career and 2019 was the best regular season of his career. The Seahawks brought Marshawn Lynch out of retirement and Lynch has shown flashes of returning to his old form. Jacob Hollister has been a good receiving TE addition for Seattle. The Seahawks OL has been inconsistent in the pass protection, but they can bully as run blockers. DJ Fluker and Germain Ifedi get low and drive forward on the right side. Mike Iupati continues to play tough, mean football. Duane Brown is a great LT. Both Brown and Iupati are banged up and might miss the action this weekend. If so, that'd be a major win for the Packers.

This Seattle defense gets great play out of their front 7. Jarran Reed and Poona Ford have been rocks in the middle of the defense. Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah are still superstars at the book-end of the defensive line. They can destroy games. Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright have played a lot of football. Both players continue to make huge impacts on games. They’re so smart. They’re dictators on the football field. Shaquill Griffin is a budding star at CB. Tre Flowers is a classic John Schneider find at CB. Schneider likes big, long, tall CB’s. Somehow, he found Flowers and snatched him up in R5. Brad McDougald and Quandre Diggs have been solid additions at Safety. The Seahawks lack depth in the secondary, so if you can spread them out, good things can happen down the field.

Both teams are going to control the tempo of the game by running the ball. They’re going to try to eat clock and to control the time of possession.

This game will be determined by two things: who can run the ball better and who can force turnovers.

The Seahawks are going to find ways to get the ball to Lynch. I expect to see Lynch as the target of a couple of screens. I also expect the Seahawks to give Russell Wilson multiple RPO looks for him to improvise. The Wilson-Lynch tandem will be in full-effect.

I’d expect the Seahawks to target Metcalf deep down the sideline when he’s covered by King. Pettine would be wise to give King safety help most of the game.

While the Packers will look to establish the run early. I fully expect to see a play-action pass to Davante on the first play of the game. We’ve seen the weak-side slant off of play action previously. I’d like to see a double move early in this game off of the same look.

Defensively, I don't think Seattle will blitz often. They'll try to play coverage and hope that their front 4 can get some pressure.

Look for Tyler Ervin to make a big play as a receiver out of the backfield down the sideline.

Expect Rodgers and Adams to connect on at least 4 completions for first downs.

Aaron Jones gets loose for a long run.

The defense gets a stop late to send the Packers to the NFC Championship!

My Take -> Week 17

Brian Gutekunst is confidently walking with his chin up and his shoulders back. Dude should be really proud of what he’s accomplished in his short time as GM of the 13-time World Champion, Green Bay Packers. Gutekunst has quickly infused the talent in the roster with athletic phenoms in the prime of their careers.

As I write, I sip a 2017 New Gladys Enigma. Even with two years of age to it, it stills pours a fruit soured punch. I listen to the Bob Marley and the Wailers Burnin’ album. 10 magical hits to this vinyl. Tosh and Marley together, so powerful.

Here are my quick vibes from the last week:

Matt LaFleur went into Minnesota and fully out coached Mike Zimmer. Zimmer had trouble slowing the Packers down all day. And, even though the scoreboard only read 23 points, it felt much more commanding than that.

Over the last two weeks, the Packers beat the Bears to clinch a playoff berth and to eliminate the Bears. Then, they went into Minnesota to capture the NFC North crown. Matt LaFleur has swept the Bears and ‘queens in his first year as Head Coach. Powerful!

Mike Pettine pushed all of the right buttons. As the DL continued to win their battles, Pettine was able to simply rush 3 or 4 lineman. There was no need to blitz Cousins as Za’Darius and Clark were dominating the line of scrimmage.

In a match up of NFC North powerhouses, Za’Darius Smith was the best player on the field. He led the Packers in tackles. He also had 3.5 sacks. He dominated the line of scrimmage and singlehandedly destroyed the ‘queens game plan.

Kevin King with the play of the game. It felt like Minnesota was starting to gain some momentum. They had just converted a 3rd and long. They were across midfield. When King snagged the pass and started to take the ball upfield, it instantly felt as though all momentum was on the Packers side.

After quiet October and November months, Kenny Clark has dialed you his intensity. He’s been wrecking the opposition all December. He bulled his way through the Minnesota passing game. He helped to destroy their passing game with constant interior pressure. It feels like his game was ignited against the Giants when he wrapped up Barkley on the 3rd and 1 on the first possession of the game. Ever since that play, Clark was been unstoppable.

Kevin King and Jaire were dynamite tacklers. They were physical in the open field. King’s tackle on Thielen on the 3rd and short run led to a huge stop. An absolutely monstrous performance by King.

LaFleur was confusing the Minnesota all day. On the Packers second possession of the 1st Quarter, he sent Ervin in motion and flipped him the ball. Ervin slipped forward for 7 yards. LaFleur came back to this play a couple of times later with Ervin used as a decoy. Ervin drew attention as he has to be accounted for. As eyes peeled towards Ervin, Jenkins paves the way for Aaron Jones to get loose. MVS also chipped in with a great block. And, with that, Jones was off to the races. 56 yards later, the Packers were tossing a dagger into the Minnesota faithful and for the regular season, Green Bay returned to its namesake —Titletown, U.S.A.

Bakhtiari and Bulaga were trustworthy. Billy Turner continues to shine. Jenkins looks like a future Pro Bowl Guard. He frequently gobbles up multiple would-be defenders. Linsley wasn’t his normal mistake free self, but he stood up to the test and helped to manage a tough environment.

I’m so happy for Aaron Rodgers. Again, he didn’t look like the guy that we’ve known and loved since he took over the reigns in 2008. Rodgers was inaccurate. He missed his mark a number of occasions. But, he stood tall in the pocket. He didn’t hold onto the football. He played in rhythm.

Aaron Jones is an elite RB. 160 total yards. 2 TDs. He’s capable of getting loose at any time.

Kumerow, MVS and Lazard have developed into really good blocking WRs. Not only are they willing, but they’re very skilled.

Davante was clutch. Minnesota couldn’t guard him. 13 catches on 16 targets. One of those incompletions was the drop in the end zone on a poorly thrown pass that you’d love to see Adams catch, but other than that, Adams was mostly flawless. 116 yards for Adams in the NFC North Division clinching game in Minnesota.

Lazard has evolved into a legitimate threat on 3rd down.

On the 2-point conversion play call, LaFleur could sense. blood in the water. His courage paid off to give the Packers a 7-point lead.

The Packers were the more dominant team. They were the more possessed team. With more than 36 minutes of ball control, the Packers dominated the game. They had twice as many first downs via the pass as Minnesota had total first downs. The Packers were more physical and had a much better plan of attack.

Rashan Gary has amped up his force over the last month. He was really close to making game changing plays on a couple of occasions. I keep waiting for him to strip the ball from behind.

Fackrell was active. When Minnesota was attempting to dial up one last comeback effort, it was Fackrell beating Reiff around the edge to force the all-important holding penalty.

Keep chopping wood, Za’Darius! Dude is the hardest working player on the field. He’s changed the spirit of this franchise.

The Packers need Preston Smith to regain his stride. Preston has not been the impact player that he was over the course of the first 8 weeks. The Packers need the Pass rushing consistency from Preston that we watched earlier in the year. If Preston finds his form, and you combine it with the December play of Clark and Za’Darius, and you add the Fackrell/Gary rotation to the mix; suddenly, it looks like a 4-man rush that could carry the Packers to a Super run.

Lancaster and Lowry made their presence felt in the run game. Loved seeing Lowry get his hands up again to knock down the 1st Quarter pass. Lowry and Lancaster are playing with confidence.

The Packers had three brutal turnovers in the 1st half and only gave up 10 points. When the defense stepped into the field for the first time and it was 1st and goal, the tone of this game felt different. Huge kudos to the defense for rising to the occasion.

TMon had a fantastic game. He jumped the third down route to get the ball back late in the 2nd Quarter. He was a great tackler all game long.

Chandon Sullivan plays with excellent length. He brings physicality as well. He’s a solid rotational DB.

Blake Martinez is a tough dude. He’s the glue in the middle of this defense.

Have to enjoy watching all of the 2 and 3 TE sets. Soon, we will see a play that was designed to get Jace free in space. At this stage, you’d think that he’d be the least likely target. I’d anticipate that you could potentially see an explosive chunk play coming off of play action in a 3-TE set.

The Packers held the ‘queens to 139 net yards. On Monday Night Football. In Minnesota. To clinch the NFC North. That buzz is sublime!

It’s December football, baby. The Packers are 12-3. It feels like they’re gaining momentum. Soak this in. Enjoy these days.

Wouldn’t it be great if Rodgers would take a pay cut after the season, so that the Packers could afford to resign Clark, Martinez and Bulaga? Prior to the Packers converting the roster bonus into a signing bonus, Rodgers was scheduled to make more $32 million next year. I’m not sure what his cap figure is for 2020 after the bonus conversion, but I did see that the Packers created more than $11 million in cap space. If he could drop that to $25 million and if the Packers release Graham, they’d be able to free up more than $15 million. Martinez would have to come at a cap friendly deal, so the Packers could afford to pay Clark and Bulaga. In this scenario, the Packers would have Clark, Lowry, Gary, the Smith Bros., Martinez, Jaire, Amos and Savage all locked you for the next three years. That’s 9 of the key defenders on their current roster.

How pathetic has the sports scene been in Minnesota? The Star-Tribune named the Barr hit on Rodgers as one of the top 5 sports moments in Minnesota over the last decade. This only adds to the enjoyment of beating Minnesota in Minnesota to secure the NFC North crown.

This week - the Packers travel to Detroit to play the Lions. LaFleur will attempt to have his team go 6-0 in the NFC North. I went to the Lions game last weekend at Denver. The Lions didn’t give max effort. They’re banged up and lacking intensity. Injuries have taken their toll and they’re currently lacking leadership. If the Packers don’t walk into Ford Field with lackadaisical passion, they’ll win handily. But, in division games, anything can happen, so the Packers must show up ready to play with heightened desire.

The Lions are really beat up on offense. They still have Kenny Golladay and he’s sure to challenge the Packers downfield. Detroit will look to beat the Packers over the top with Golladay. Danny Amendola is still a worthy slot WR. He finds the soft spot in the defense. Surprisingly, the Lions are still playing Kerryon Johnson. Johnson is a good back, but he’s been dealing with a boatload of injuries. David Blough throws a good deep ball. He’s not ready for prime time and will give the Packers a couple of opportunities to steal the football. The Lions OL is mostly intact. Ricky Wagner and Taylor Decker are big bodied Tackles who have manned up and played through injury. Frank Ragnow is a good interior lineman. Lady Aboushi couldn’t hold up at Denver. Graham Glasgow also struggled. Look for Za’Darius to be lined up on the interior of the defense most of the game. Aboushi can’t block an inspired Za’Darius. Bo Scarborough is a worthwhile backup RB who hits the hole hard. The Lions injuries at WR, TE, and RB have decimated the depth of their talent at the skill positions.

Defensively, the Lions still have Flowers, Robinson and Harrison to disrupt the flow of the game. They’re all talented players. Darius Slay is still grinding at CB, too. Tavon Wilson is trying to step up as the leader of the defense and Tracy Walker looks to be following his lead. The Lions are really banged up at LB. the middle of the Lions defense won’t be able to slow down the Packers rushing attack. If the Packers can get Jones to the 2nd level, look for Jones to feast all day.

The Lions will try to pound the ball at the heart of the Packers defense. Blake Martinez has to step up and plug the hole. If the Packers can slow the Lions run game down early, Blough can’t beat them.

Look for Pettine to give King help over the top with Savage against Golladay. Expect Savage to snag an interception this week.

LaFleur comes out with play action. He takes a shot deep to Lazard and Rodgers is on point.

Detroit fights hard early. They keep it close for 20 minutes. But, they don’t have the stamina to keep up with this determined Packers team. The nail biting won’t last long.

The Packers OL leans on the Detroit DL and Aaron Jones gets loose in a big way.

Clark and Za’Darius create havoc.

Let’s go, Preston! Come off the edge and make a play. I’m cheering for you to destroy a 3rd down.

With Slay mostly on Adams, Rodgers looks to Graham, Lazard and G-Mo.

Look for LaFleur to get Ervin involved in the screen game or on a halfback wheel.

With Jamaal Williams unlikely to play, we might see Dexter Williams involved this week.

Rodgers tosses 2 TDs, Jones runs for 2.

The Packers bring playoff intensity to a meaningless game for the Lions. With that, the Packers earn a 1st round bye and a 13-3 record.

The last time the Packers won the Division was in 2016 and the Packers closed out the Regular Season with a win in Detroit. Once again, the Packers are the Division Champions and they’ll be closing out the season with a win in Detroit.
