Greetings, G-Force.
Suddenly, desperation has settled in. Almost ridiculously, at 3-2, our lifeline is ticking. Injuries are outrageous. Yet, we're still breathing and we must keep fighting.
8-0 at home. 2-6 on the road. Playoff berth. Let's make it happen. The road to the playoffs comes through us. But, we must control our own turf. Regardless of who steps on the field, we can make it a tough place to play. But, we must bring it.
For this week, it's about playing with a free spirit. Not sure if the expectations have gotten to us or what, but we're playing tight. We must play with passion. But, we also must be carefree. It seems like this team, which was once youthful, jovial & exuberant - its now pressing, playing with panic. I don't know this team. But, this week, we must return to our roots. Return to what has made this generation of Packers a fun team to watch.
No doubt, we should be 5-0. No question. Some may blame Ted Thompson. Others will blame Mike McCarthy. I blame the players that are the leaders of this team. I look at players that we've depended on. In fact, I commend Mike McCarthy. His star QB asked for the football. McCarthy gave both the ball & the game to his QB. Rodgers wanted the ball in his hands. McCarthy positioned Rodgers for success. Rodgers failed to win the game when we had multiple opportunities to do so. In the 4th Quarter & OT, Rodgers had 6 chances to essentially seal the game. The Packers offense totaled 3 first down. 91 yards. 0 points. 1 turnover. Thus, our chances of victory were shattered.
Since 1999, we've depended on Quickie to make plays over the middle. He's been our go-to guy. 4 drops last Sunday were unacceptable. Especially the play when we led 13-3 & we were driving. Rodgers hit him in stride. Double-D has made a living catching that ball. If he hangs on, we have 1st & 10 from the 13. A chance to seal the game. He dropped it. It was the biggest play of the game.
Greg Jennings, ditch the pink. Go back to yellow. Bust out the yellow wrist bands/tape that you were rockin' at the beginning of last year. Play with flava. Play with confidence. Mate, I understand that you're frustrated. But, bro, you have to hang onto the ball when it hits you in the hands.
No one loves Sir Charles more than me. But, Chuckie, man, it's time to roll smoothly. Get your hands off the WR's. Play with confidence. No reason to press. The plays are coming. Be patient. They'll happen. Karma is on your side.
Coming into the year, I thought Nintendo Nick, the Claymaker, YOTTO, and Rodgers were all possibilities for the All-Decade team. But, Nick, it's time for you to make a play. Where are you, Nick? We need you! We depend on you! Nick? Nick? Nick!
By the way, what has happened to Aaron Rodgers? He's back to his jumpy ways. He can't put a team away. Forcing throws. Dancing in the pocket, not trusting his line. Not looking downfield. Rather he's looking at the pass rush. EVEN WHEN HE HAS TIME, he seems to be looking for pressure! Drives me nuts. Aaron, when it's 1st & 10, it's OK to use the check down. It's OK to use the middle of the field. There's nothing wrong with 2nd & 5. Trust Crabtree. We kept 4 TE's for a reason.
Rodgers isn't seeing the field. While, he does have 99 yards rushing, I think that there have been more opportunities to use his legs. Yet, he's forced plays downfield & the result has been an incompletion. Almost amazingly, Rodgers is 12th in the league in passer rating. He's tied for the 6th most interceptions in the league. That's not Aaron Rodgers.
Play with confidence, Aaron. I trust in you. When you play as you're capable, no one is more talented than you. You have the potential to be the MVP. But, you have to play as yourself. Find your playmakers. Let them make plays. Make decisions quick. Get rid of the ball. Good things will happen.
Small observations:
- Anytime we want to sign Cullen Jenkins, I'll be fine with it. He's an anchor on our defense. With Jenkins, Jolly, Pickett, Raji, and Neal, we'll have the best DL in the NFL for the next three years. CJ Wilson is our developmental prospect unless we find someone better as an undrafted FA. LOCK UP JENKINS!
- BJ "Jazz Hands" Raji. What a stud!
- Mike Neal. Making plays. Getting a push.
- AQ81 showing promise. Wish we would have seen more on the 4th & 1. But, he showed enough to get me excited.
- Speaking of the 4th & 1, didn't we learn our lesson yet? On the road, ALWAYS take a 2 score lead when given the opportunity. We had our chance at the TD. We tried a QB sneak when we should have given the ball to Kuhn. When we got stuffed there, we blew our opportunity. Should have kicked the FG. Said it during the timeout. Saying it again right now. ALWAYS take the points if you have a chance to take a 2-score lead.
- BRAD JONES? Where are you, Brad? You've disappeared. And it looks like you've lost the confidence of the coaching staff. Interesting to see him dropping back into coverage. Almost as though he was an ILB as Desmond Bishop was pressuring the QB.
- Super impressed with Desmond Bishop. HUGE game from Bishop. Would love to see more of it.
- Like the intensity that AJ Hawk is playing with as well.
- T-Mon Williams, any day now, Ted. LOCK HIM UP! Nothing to wait for. Get it on this year's books. Get it done, Ted.
- Can't be pissed with Peprah. Sure, he got beat twice, but you almost had to expect it. Other than those two plays, I thought he played physical & confident. Looked comfortable in the defense.
- P-Lee can't play in this league.
- I wouldn't be disappointed if we started TJ Lang & Bulaga at tackle one of these weeks. See what we have in both of them.
- Our special teams are a disaster.
- Lets promote Dom Capers to Co-Head Coach. Give him a title. Can't let him leave!
- After 5 weeks, our defense has totaled 21 sacks & 8 turnovers.
This week - the Dolphins come to town. Without special teams miscues, the 'Fins might be 4-0. They've been playing better on the road than at home. Expect a stiff challenge. They'll take chances with Brandon Marshall deep down the middle of the field. On 3rd down, they'll look for Davone Bess. While Henne has been mistake prone, he's also made good progress. He'll look for Fasano on 1st down & take what the defense gives him.
Ronnie Brown looks to be on his last leg, while Ricky Williams continues to pound away. Yet, on 3rd & 2 or less, the ball is going to Lousaka Polite. Every time, expect the ball to be in Polite's hands. Normally, he'll fight for a 1st down.
Surprisingly, the Dolphins have looked good on defense. Randy Starks, Karlos Dansby, Cameron Wake, Vontae Davis, and Yeremiah Bell have all had great years thus far. Additionally, they'll get Channing Crowder & Jared Odrick back this week. Koa Misi has shown promise at OLB. Chris Clemons has been decent, but he can be beaten over the top. Jason Allen has improved, but he to can be beaten.
The Dolphins special teams have been the worst in the NFL. I just fear that we can't take control of this weakness.
The 'Fins will use a variety of blitz packages to confuse the Packers & then they'll depend on Starks to get a push from the inside & Wake to beat whoever plays RT with a speed rush. Wake has developed as a rusher. He'll force Rodgers to step up in the pocket, which has become Rodgers' biggest weakness.
The opening play of the game. I want 3 WR. 1 TE. B-Jack in the backfield. Jennings is split wide left. He'll be 1 on 1 vs. Jason Allen. Next to our RT is AQ81. Next to AQ 81 is Double-D. James Jones is split wide right. B-Jack gives help against Cameron Wake. It's Jennings on a puma-route. He'll catch it. Turn. He'll be man v man against Allen. Make a play, Greg.
Quarless grabs 5 balls this weekend. Gives us hope in a post J-Mike life.
Prediction of the week: Our defense scores a TD.
Packers 23. Dolphins 20.
Polish your helmets. Let 'em sparkle. Let 'em shine. Lambeau will rise. We're ready. Let's go have fun. Remember to enjoy yourself. Play with a free spirit & you'll capture the victory. Even with the injuries, we are the better team. Our depth will rise. Our youth will elevate. Play with energy. This is our game. 8-0 at home brings us a playoff berth.

For those of you that are new to the blog, when I had more time, I would occasionally post a blog titled "Who are you watching now?" It focused on players that I was interested in at the college level. As time has diminished, I've narrowed the list to a mock draft. I only include Seniors that I've seen play. Also, I don't draft OL as I don't follow it closely enough. I'm projecting the Packers as having approximately the 24th pick in the draft. I try to apply a few principles that Ted Thompson seems to follow - mainly that he mostly drafts players with associations to Texas, Michigan, Florida, NJ, and California. I also apply a couple of basic McKenna-isms. First, the "Mark Clayton effect" which forces me to pay attention to the University of Louisville. If the Packers would have followed this effect, the 2008 draft would have looked significantly different. The "Law of Brian Dawkins" which makes sure you pay attention to the defensive backfield at Clemson. The "Antonio Freeman Attraction" which ensures that Virginia Tech playmakers are noticed. Thus, the 2011 Packers mock draft:
Round 1: Greg Jones, ILB, Michigan St. When Stack speaks, I listen. 3 years ago, he brought his name up to me. I've paid high attention to his game ever since. He'd instantly be an upgrade at ILB. Jones has the speed and power to play at the next level.
Jones barely beats out Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia. Come on! How could I not consider him. First, his name is Ras-I! He's 6-2, 200 lbs. By now, we know that Ted Thompson only drafts CB's that stand at least 6-0 tall. He attacks the ball in the air. Living in ACC land, I've been watching him for 3 years. I thought he was a better player than Chris Cook - who the Vikings drafted with the 1st pick of the 2nd round. He mans up. Plays the ball. Moreover, he's dealt with a hamstring injury. Doesn't that make him a lock for our 1st round pick?
I'm trying to look at LB's as much as possible this year. Guys I'm following as 1st round prospects are Jeremy Beal, OLB, OK and Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M. Interestingly, both have Texas ties. I've also got my eye on DeMarco Murray, RB, OK.
Round 2: Noel Devine, RB, WVU. For years, I've been begging for an electric scat back. A HR hitter. A game changer. A guy who can also return kicks. Devine fits this category.
Others: If not Devine, another HR hitter is Randall Cobb, WR, Kentucky. He can do it all. He single-handedly keeps Kentucky in games. A terrific utility football player. How can you not cheer for Mark Herzlich after all he's been through with - beating cancer. If healthy, the big time playmaking OLB from Boston College will have a career in the NFL. A trend is that I'm following OLB's that can drop in coverage. Stand 6-2 or above. Weigh approximately 250. Would like for them to run in the 4.6 range. Mason Foster, OLB, Washington played a huge role in Washington's upset of USC. I want to see more of him as I hadn't noticed him prior to that game. Prior to the disaster at UNC, I was enjoying Quan Sturdivant, ILB. Austin Pettis, WR, Boise has big time playmaking ability. Another player that I'm considering is Chris Culliver, CB, South Carolina. Has the size and the make to perform at the next level.
Round 3: Chris Rucker, CB, Michigan State. Rucker has the size & speed that Thompson looks for in a CB. He'll also make a play on the ball. Displayed in the game at Michigan when Rucker stepped in front of a Denard Robinson ball. Rucker plays the ball well in the air. And he's not afraid to help out in run defense. At this point, Rucker beats out Leonard Hankerson, WR, []_[]. Hankerson will make it in the NFL. Guy can play in the slot. Will run over the middle. Can take you deep. Great size. Great speed. Occasionally, he'll drop a pass, but he'll also amaze with sensational grabs. Jones is soon to be a FA. Jordy has not developed like we'd hoped. Driver is aging. Need to continue to give Rodgers options. Hankerson fits what we do.
Cliff Matthews, OLB, South Carolina. No relation to Clay, but he'd look nice rushing the passer opposite Clay. Guy has speed & can get to the QB. Big problem is that he can't drop in coverage like we'd need, so he's not the answer.Others: Marcus Gilchrist, CB, Clemson. I like Gilchrist, but he's only 5-11. Need to be 6-0 to be on our roster. Kelvin Sheppard, LB, LSU. I fear that Sheppard might not be fast enough for the NFL. Will be interesting to see how he times. Sometimes he's slow to get sideline-to-sideline, but he'll bury you if you're in front of him. Kendall Hunter, RB, OK State. Not the dynamic scat back, but he'll run around you. Great vision. Can catch the ball. Has shown some HR ability. Another OLB's that has caught my eye is KJ Wright from Mississippi State. He isn't as big in stature, but he can drop in coverage and has decent pass rush skills. Finds the football.
Round 4: Dontay Moch, OLB, Nevada. Have yet to see him this year, but last year I was indoors on a rainy night watching Missouri at Nevada. Dontay Moch stood out. He was the sole playmaker on the Nevada defense. Great speed, but passive. Nonetheless, he was in Missouri's backfield. Going to try & catch a Nevada game this year on TV, but I've had his name jarred in my memory for the better part of a year. Moch beats out Derrick Locke, RB, Kentucky as I selected Noel Devine earlier. Locke can cut with the best of them. Dangerous in the open field. He'd fit what we need. Small & elusive. Quick with the ball. Big play capabilities.
Others: If only Brandon Hogan, CB, WVU was listed at 6-0. He plays the ball in the air with the best of them. Sure tackler. Physical style. But, he's only 5-10. Colin McCarthy, ILB, []_[] reminds me of Brian Noble in many ways. Gritty player. Fighter. Get dirty. Plays physical and with attitude. Great heart. Also, when I watch Nevada later on, I'm going to have my eye on Colin Kaepernick, QB.
Round 5: Casey Matthews, ILB, Oregon. Can you imagine two long-haired Matthews brothers manning our LB unit? It's possible. Make it happen, Ted! Another to consider is Terrence Tolliver, WR, LSU. Great size. Gets deep. Tough to bring down. When it's all said & done, he might be a 3rd rounder, but for now, I see him listed on web sites as a 4th-5th round prospect.
Others: Similar to Locke is James Rodgers, WR, Oregon State though I'm not certain how Rodgers will respond to injury. Similar to Tolliver is Armon Binns, WR, Cincy.
** While it's likely that the Packers will have an additional 4th or 5th rounder via compensation with the loss of AK-74, until it's announced, I'm not going to make a pick. **
Round 6: Tejay Johnson, S, TCU. Smart player. Good range. Plays the ball well. Sure tackler. Damien Berry, RB, []_[]. Guy has speed and great vision. A one cut runner who can fight through arm tackles.
Others: Brooks Reed, OLB, Arizona. Might not have the true speed to drop in coverage, but he's a fighter. And he has the motor that's required. At the college level, he can pursue the QB. Damien Berry, RB, []_[]. Guy has speed and great vision.
Round 7: Dom DeCicco, S, Pitt. A ball hawk. A football player. Tough minded. Finds the ball in the air. Though a bit stiff, he seems to play faster than he runs.
Round 7a: Kevin Riley, QB, Cal. Poise in the pocket. Good composure. Confident. Good developmental prospect.
Others: Jock Sanders, WR, WVU. Good return skills. Offensive utility player. Can play a WR or can play RB. Poor man's Percy Harvin. Elusive. Makes people miss and makes plays with the ball in his hands. Zac Etheridge, S, Auburn. Physical. Leader on a solid Auburn team. Also, two RB's to watch are Graig Cooper, RB, []_[] & Donald Buckram, RB, UTEP. Prior to injury, Cooper might have been one of the top backs in the country. Rushed his way back. Relegated to mostly special teams work. Worth considering. Buckram is elusive and aggressive with the ball in his hands. Shifty. Small. Makes you miss.

My Take -> Week 5
Greetings, G-Force.
Amazing how much can change in less than a week. As a writer, I view myself as an optimistic realist. One who looks at the bright side & enjoys imagining ways in which the Packers are going to be victorious. Frankly, this week has taken some wind out of my sails. Some of it we can control, others we cannot.
I'll start with Marshawn Lynch. I like Marshawn Lynch. I don't love him. While our running game infuriates me, the fact that we didn't trade for Lynch doesn't overwhelm me. What bothers me is that we are standing firm with who we've already got. I believe that we're a capable RB away from being the elite offense in the NFL. We don't need a superstar. We need a threat. Sure, Lynch would have been that guy, but I'm sure there are also small school street FA's that can handle the duty as well. We need someone that defenses have to be aware of. And really, running in our system is a fairly easy task. Use your vision. Plant the foot. Cut back. Hold onto the ball. And GO! Full speed ahead. San Diego found a replacement in Tolbert. NE has a couple of guys that no one has ever heard of. This week, we'll see Ryan Torain - he fits in that mold. He was in for a tryout last year. We didn't keep him around. He would have fit our present needs. WE NEED A BACK! NOW!
Bless John Kuhn's heart. He has guts. He has courage. I like having him on our team. But, man, we need a compliment. On the first play of our last drive, a number of players in this league would have taken that play to the house. Kuhn can't get a 1st down on the play. The 3rd & 2 in the 1st Quarter was blocked perfectly. Kuhn couldn't get to the outside. Note to McCarthy - use Kuhn straight ahead or not at all.
I've been direct with my thoughts over the last couple of years with regards to B-Jack. I've received criticism for my thoughts in the past. To me, he is what he is. An excellent blocker on 3rd down. Decent hands. But, he's below average while running with the ball.
Where's Dmitry Nance? Is he that bad that he can't get on the field for anything other than special teams play. I'm baffled. I was convinced that he'd get a try. I trust Ted Thompson & I hope he is right with Nance. If not, we wait for James Starks. Starks was last seen running with the football in 2008 while he played for the University at Buffalo. Starks, I'm pulling for you, but kid, it's a long way from the University at Buffalo to the NFL. Especially after not taking contact in nearly 2 years. I'm not positive that we recognize this.
So, in short, I'm not mad that we didn't go after Lynch. I'm frustrated that we are doing NOTHING to jump start this running game. One last thing on Lynch - conventional wisdom would think that a 4th in the next two drafts would have landed us Lynch. Most analysts are projecting that we'll get a 4th as a compensatory pick for the loss of AK-74. So, we'll be armed with two 4th rounders. It wouldn't have been unreasonable to part with one of them.
As Judas was leaving the Packers organization, he discussed whether he thought the leadership in the Packers front office was serious enough to make the required moves that would propel the Green & Gold to the Super Bowl. I don't want this notion to begin to echo throughout our locker room. As my good mate, Stack, puts it: "Charles Woodson has one thing missing from his trophy mantel. He has the Heisman, a National Championship, a Defensive MVP." It's time to get Sir Charles the necessary tools to win a title. After all, it's the "logical" thing to do.
As the 'queens are playing for the title by bringing Randy Moss into the Twin Cities, we are holding onto our draft picks as if they're gold. There are various types of currency in the NFL. There's the draft, free agency & signing your own stallions. For Thompson, clearly, his draft picks are his ultimate treasure. Yet, we failed to acquire a pick during the final days of the preseason even though we had the most players claimed after the final cuts. Again, I like Thompson, I am just confused.
With success comes heightened expectations. And it starts at the top in what has become a win-now league. It's time for the Packers to look at the mountain & to determine what it'll take to summit it.
Injuries are at ridiculous levels. Burnett is done for the year. The severity of Barnett & Chillar's injuries are unknown. Nintendo Nick is questionable for this weekend. Tauscher & Clifton are banged up. Sam Shields is unable to practice. Thus, we see more of J-Bush.
Offensively, the 2010 Packers have been unable to delivery a knock-out punch. No resemblance of the Championship Drive I've discussed in the past. In the Philly, Chicago, & Detroit games, I felt we had the ball and a chance to essentially secure victory. In each case, we couldn't seal the fate until the very end. Time to find our inner "dagger."
Small Observations:
- Cullen Jenkins continues to gut it out with one hand. 4 sacks. 4 games. Can we please sign this guy? What are we waiting for?
- Really impressed with the work of the OL last week. Thought both Sitton & Colledge did a nice job on Suh. Sure, Suh had a sack, but for the most part he was quiet. Wells did a nice job chiming in on him as well.
- J-Mike = YOTTO! Can we please use him & that 4 yard slant as our passing game? Spread out the offense. Get the ball to J-Mike. He's quickly becoming one of the most lethal weapons in football. Gotta use him more. He should be getting a similar amount of receptions as Wes Welker does each week.
- Surprised that Rodgers has not been on the same page with receivers a couple of times this year. Last week alone, he wasn't on the same page as AQ81, Nelson, and Greg Jennings on 3 separate plays.
- AQ81 gets the start. Packers come out in double TE formation. AQ81 split out right. Only to have him run a 5 yard down & in. Things that make you go hmmmm.
- Any time we want to get Jordy Nelson off Kickoff Returns, it'll be fine with me. He's becoming a liability.
- At this stage, we also need someone other than T-Mon returning Punts. Can't risk injury.
- Once again, Aaron Rodgers takes a cheap shot on the sack by Delmas. No call. Rubbish.
- Love when BJ Raji shows us the "Jazz Hands!" So much comedy.
- Props to Mike Neal for forcing the fumble!
- Double-D getting in the end zone. Surprised that Rodgers missed him on the quick out pattern on 3rd down. He was open beyond the marker. Instead, Rodgers forced it to Jennings & it got picked.
- Why can't Jennings catch the deep ball anymore?
- If anyone sees Brad Jones, please send him to 1265 Lombardi Ave, Green Bay, WI 54304. Thanks. Clearly, he's lost. Guy needs to make a play.
- The Claymaker is an absolute force. Wish they'd just leave the Z-Man across from him. And please don't show me Poppinga across from him again. We need to create ways to free up Clay. In order to do so, someone needs to elevate across from him.
- There was an AJ Hawk sighting at Lambeau Field last week. Without him, we don't win that game.
- Anyone else notice Sir Charles' reaction after the Calvin Johnson TD at the end of the 1st half? He turned to Derrick Martin with complete disgust. How can Martin not make a play on either the ball or Johnson?
-Massive props to both the OL & to Kuhn during the last drive. Also to Rodgers for his intelligence. His mind was in the right place on the scramble where he stayed inbounds. During the Redskins-Eagles game, McNabb ran out of bounds on a similar play & later on they had to punt. Gave the Eagles an additional 40 seconds. Granted, the Eagles didn't do much with it, but that's beside the point.
- Our special teams units have cost us one game already. It wouldn't surprise me if it costs us at least 2 more this season.
- Congrats to Sir Charles for being the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week. Carry us thru the month of October Chuckie, we need you! His TD was one for the ages. Seriously.
- With J-Bush on the field, the Packers were unable to blitz Sir Charles. Had to keep Chuckie on the outside. Couldn't trust J-Bush in coverage. Bush has to play in the slot or not at all. Otherwise, we'll be held hostage.
- Dear Desmond Bishop, you get your chance this week. You've been begging for it. Be a run-stopper. A force up the middle. Shadow McNabb. Play with instinct, but be cognitive of your desire to over pursue. Be ready to bang heads, mate. Get after it.
- Nick Barnett looks like he's lost a step. Yes, he was hurt. But, it was his wrist. Shouldn't affect his speed.
- Nintendo Nick should consider the same vision surgery that LeRoy Butler had prior to the 1993 season. By my unofficial count, he's had his hands on 4 balls that could have been intercepted this year.
- Is the Quinn Johnson injury for real? Or are they going to have some quiet IR injury for him when Starks comes back? Is P-Lee going to be gone when Ras Al comes back?
- After 3 sacks & 3 turnovers, after 4 games, the totals are 17 sacks & 7 turnovers.
Through it all, a win is a win in this league. And the Lions are scrappy. They're fighters. They're 0-4, but they are a few plays from being in position to be 4-0. Therefore, every win is a good win. No matter how ugly it may seem.
This week - we travel to the Nation's Capital to visit the Redskins in what I call a MUST WIN. We need to win our next two games before this schedule gets unbelievably tough. Since we won the Super Bowl in 1996, two of our three best teams were prevented another Title by Donovan McNabb & Mike Shanahan. Now, the nemeses have united. And they need this win just as badly as we do.
Armed with a 3-4 defenses that is still figuring out the kinks, the Redskins have played solid defense in 2 of their 4 games. Even though - after three games - they had given up the most yards in the NFL. Led by Jim Haslett, the defense is a work in progress. They have players built for the 4-3 playing in the 3-4. A total adjustment. Haynesworth, Andre Carter & Brian Orakpo are solid NFL starters, but they aren't 3-4 players. Vonnie Holiday & Philip Daniels are seasoned professionals, but they're at the end of their careers. Rocky McIntosh & London Fletcher are football players. Put pads on them & they'll find the football. DeAngelo Hall, Philip Buchanon, Carlos Rogers, and Kevin Barnes all have flava. But, all can be beat. I loved LaRon Landry coming out of college. He's great against the run. He's been a bit vulnerable in the air. A piercing hitter, Landry, will surely be present on all crossing routes. Kareem Moore can be had.
With Clinton Portis out, they turn to Torain. Torain is an underappreciated back. He runs with force. With pace. Occasionally, a little upright, but he'll fall forward. And, at times, he'll run through you. Everytime we play the 'Skins, it seems Chris Cooley gets the best of us. McNabb loves the TE - expect Cooley to get his chances. It's no surprise that Santana Moss is McNabb's go-to guy. Moss doesn't scare me. Occasionally, McNabb will look for Anthony Armstrong on 3rd down.
I agree with Aaron Rodgers. Lets spread 'em out. Get our best players on the field. Matt Schaub passed for 497 yards against the Redskins. Let me repeat, 497 yards.
Give the game to Rodgers. Finley gets 10 catches and 2 TD's. Jennings grabs 5 and a TD. Double-D notches 3 and a TD. Jones holds onto 3 as well. Kuhn, Hall, B-Jack, Jordy, & Lee also catch ball. Yes, 9 different receivers. And Rodgers is in control. It's his game. The pass rush of the Redskins does not strike fear in me. Let's attack.
Defensively, play a lot of base 3-4. Straight up. Man up against these guys. Get ready to be physical. Bishop -> you are the guy who is accountable for shadowing McNabb. Don't let him get loose. Ever. He's your responsibility. Run him down. Keep him contained.
AJ, let your nuts hang, mate. Go after Torain. Get him straight on. Set the standard early. We can get down and dirty against these guys.
Look for Pickett to have a big game against the run.
This week - our depth gets tested. I think we've got enough to get by. McNabb has been a thorn in our side. Not this Sunday.

Amazing how much can change in less than a week. As a writer, I view myself as an optimistic realist. One who looks at the bright side & enjoys imagining ways in which the Packers are going to be victorious. Frankly, this week has taken some wind out of my sails. Some of it we can control, others we cannot.
I'll start with Marshawn Lynch. I like Marshawn Lynch. I don't love him. While our running game infuriates me, the fact that we didn't trade for Lynch doesn't overwhelm me. What bothers me is that we are standing firm with who we've already got. I believe that we're a capable RB away from being the elite offense in the NFL. We don't need a superstar. We need a threat. Sure, Lynch would have been that guy, but I'm sure there are also small school street FA's that can handle the duty as well. We need someone that defenses have to be aware of. And really, running in our system is a fairly easy task. Use your vision. Plant the foot. Cut back. Hold onto the ball. And GO! Full speed ahead. San Diego found a replacement in Tolbert. NE has a couple of guys that no one has ever heard of. This week, we'll see Ryan Torain - he fits in that mold. He was in for a tryout last year. We didn't keep him around. He would have fit our present needs. WE NEED A BACK! NOW!
Bless John Kuhn's heart. He has guts. He has courage. I like having him on our team. But, man, we need a compliment. On the first play of our last drive, a number of players in this league would have taken that play to the house. Kuhn can't get a 1st down on the play. The 3rd & 2 in the 1st Quarter was blocked perfectly. Kuhn couldn't get to the outside. Note to McCarthy - use Kuhn straight ahead or not at all.
I've been direct with my thoughts over the last couple of years with regards to B-Jack. I've received criticism for my thoughts in the past. To me, he is what he is. An excellent blocker on 3rd down. Decent hands. But, he's below average while running with the ball.
Where's Dmitry Nance? Is he that bad that he can't get on the field for anything other than special teams play. I'm baffled. I was convinced that he'd get a try. I trust Ted Thompson & I hope he is right with Nance. If not, we wait for James Starks. Starks was last seen running with the football in 2008 while he played for the University at Buffalo. Starks, I'm pulling for you, but kid, it's a long way from the University at Buffalo to the NFL. Especially after not taking contact in nearly 2 years. I'm not positive that we recognize this.
So, in short, I'm not mad that we didn't go after Lynch. I'm frustrated that we are doing NOTHING to jump start this running game. One last thing on Lynch - conventional wisdom would think that a 4th in the next two drafts would have landed us Lynch. Most analysts are projecting that we'll get a 4th as a compensatory pick for the loss of AK-74. So, we'll be armed with two 4th rounders. It wouldn't have been unreasonable to part with one of them.
As Judas was leaving the Packers organization, he discussed whether he thought the leadership in the Packers front office was serious enough to make the required moves that would propel the Green & Gold to the Super Bowl. I don't want this notion to begin to echo throughout our locker room. As my good mate, Stack, puts it: "Charles Woodson has one thing missing from his trophy mantel. He has the Heisman, a National Championship, a Defensive MVP." It's time to get Sir Charles the necessary tools to win a title. After all, it's the "logical" thing to do.
As the 'queens are playing for the title by bringing Randy Moss into the Twin Cities, we are holding onto our draft picks as if they're gold. There are various types of currency in the NFL. There's the draft, free agency & signing your own stallions. For Thompson, clearly, his draft picks are his ultimate treasure. Yet, we failed to acquire a pick during the final days of the preseason even though we had the most players claimed after the final cuts. Again, I like Thompson, I am just confused.
With success comes heightened expectations. And it starts at the top in what has become a win-now league. It's time for the Packers to look at the mountain & to determine what it'll take to summit it.
Injuries are at ridiculous levels. Burnett is done for the year. The severity of Barnett & Chillar's injuries are unknown. Nintendo Nick is questionable for this weekend. Tauscher & Clifton are banged up. Sam Shields is unable to practice. Thus, we see more of J-Bush.
Offensively, the 2010 Packers have been unable to delivery a knock-out punch. No resemblance of the Championship Drive I've discussed in the past. In the Philly, Chicago, & Detroit games, I felt we had the ball and a chance to essentially secure victory. In each case, we couldn't seal the fate until the very end. Time to find our inner "dagger."
Small Observations:
- Cullen Jenkins continues to gut it out with one hand. 4 sacks. 4 games. Can we please sign this guy? What are we waiting for?
- Really impressed with the work of the OL last week. Thought both Sitton & Colledge did a nice job on Suh. Sure, Suh had a sack, but for the most part he was quiet. Wells did a nice job chiming in on him as well.
- J-Mike = YOTTO! Can we please use him & that 4 yard slant as our passing game? Spread out the offense. Get the ball to J-Mike. He's quickly becoming one of the most lethal weapons in football. Gotta use him more. He should be getting a similar amount of receptions as Wes Welker does each week.
- Surprised that Rodgers has not been on the same page with receivers a couple of times this year. Last week alone, he wasn't on the same page as AQ81, Nelson, and Greg Jennings on 3 separate plays.
- AQ81 gets the start. Packers come out in double TE formation. AQ81 split out right. Only to have him run a 5 yard down & in. Things that make you go hmmmm.
- Any time we want to get Jordy Nelson off Kickoff Returns, it'll be fine with me. He's becoming a liability.
- At this stage, we also need someone other than T-Mon returning Punts. Can't risk injury.
- Once again, Aaron Rodgers takes a cheap shot on the sack by Delmas. No call. Rubbish.
- Love when BJ Raji shows us the "Jazz Hands!" So much comedy.
- Props to Mike Neal for forcing the fumble!
- Double-D getting in the end zone. Surprised that Rodgers missed him on the quick out pattern on 3rd down. He was open beyond the marker. Instead, Rodgers forced it to Jennings & it got picked.
- Why can't Jennings catch the deep ball anymore?
- If anyone sees Brad Jones, please send him to 1265 Lombardi Ave, Green Bay, WI 54304. Thanks. Clearly, he's lost. Guy needs to make a play.
- The Claymaker is an absolute force. Wish they'd just leave the Z-Man across from him. And please don't show me Poppinga across from him again. We need to create ways to free up Clay. In order to do so, someone needs to elevate across from him.
- There was an AJ Hawk sighting at Lambeau Field last week. Without him, we don't win that game.
- Anyone else notice Sir Charles' reaction after the Calvin Johnson TD at the end of the 1st half? He turned to Derrick Martin with complete disgust. How can Martin not make a play on either the ball or Johnson?
-Massive props to both the OL & to Kuhn during the last drive. Also to Rodgers for his intelligence. His mind was in the right place on the scramble where he stayed inbounds. During the Redskins-Eagles game, McNabb ran out of bounds on a similar play & later on they had to punt. Gave the Eagles an additional 40 seconds. Granted, the Eagles didn't do much with it, but that's beside the point.
- Our special teams units have cost us one game already. It wouldn't surprise me if it costs us at least 2 more this season.
- Congrats to Sir Charles for being the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week. Carry us thru the month of October Chuckie, we need you! His TD was one for the ages. Seriously.
- With J-Bush on the field, the Packers were unable to blitz Sir Charles. Had to keep Chuckie on the outside. Couldn't trust J-Bush in coverage. Bush has to play in the slot or not at all. Otherwise, we'll be held hostage.
- Dear Desmond Bishop, you get your chance this week. You've been begging for it. Be a run-stopper. A force up the middle. Shadow McNabb. Play with instinct, but be cognitive of your desire to over pursue. Be ready to bang heads, mate. Get after it.
- Nick Barnett looks like he's lost a step. Yes, he was hurt. But, it was his wrist. Shouldn't affect his speed.
- Nintendo Nick should consider the same vision surgery that LeRoy Butler had prior to the 1993 season. By my unofficial count, he's had his hands on 4 balls that could have been intercepted this year.
- Is the Quinn Johnson injury for real? Or are they going to have some quiet IR injury for him when Starks comes back? Is P-Lee going to be gone when Ras Al comes back?
- After 3 sacks & 3 turnovers, after 4 games, the totals are 17 sacks & 7 turnovers.
Through it all, a win is a win in this league. And the Lions are scrappy. They're fighters. They're 0-4, but they are a few plays from being in position to be 4-0. Therefore, every win is a good win. No matter how ugly it may seem.
This week - we travel to the Nation's Capital to visit the Redskins in what I call a MUST WIN. We need to win our next two games before this schedule gets unbelievably tough. Since we won the Super Bowl in 1996, two of our three best teams were prevented another Title by Donovan McNabb & Mike Shanahan. Now, the nemeses have united. And they need this win just as badly as we do.
Armed with a 3-4 defenses that is still figuring out the kinks, the Redskins have played solid defense in 2 of their 4 games. Even though - after three games - they had given up the most yards in the NFL. Led by Jim Haslett, the defense is a work in progress. They have players built for the 4-3 playing in the 3-4. A total adjustment. Haynesworth, Andre Carter & Brian Orakpo are solid NFL starters, but they aren't 3-4 players. Vonnie Holiday & Philip Daniels are seasoned professionals, but they're at the end of their careers. Rocky McIntosh & London Fletcher are football players. Put pads on them & they'll find the football. DeAngelo Hall, Philip Buchanon, Carlos Rogers, and Kevin Barnes all have flava. But, all can be beat. I loved LaRon Landry coming out of college. He's great against the run. He's been a bit vulnerable in the air. A piercing hitter, Landry, will surely be present on all crossing routes. Kareem Moore can be had.
With Clinton Portis out, they turn to Torain. Torain is an underappreciated back. He runs with force. With pace. Occasionally, a little upright, but he'll fall forward. My Take -> Week 4
Greetings, G-Force.
Absolutely gut-wrenching. Heart-stabbing. In an outright domination, we lose. Truly unbelievable. Until the questionable pass interference call on Morgan Burnett - not for a minute did I believe the Packers were going to lose.
From those that I have spoken with, I seem to be alone with what bothers me most about this game. For some, it's the running game. For others, it's the penalties. For some, it's McCarthy's challenge. For others, it's the play of the offensive tackles. For most, it's the final 2 minutes & McCarthy's decision to not let them score. For me, it's the punt with just over 2 minutes left in the first half. For me, that was the single most important play of the game. The Bears were dead. In hibernation. The crowd was silent. The game was ours. All we needed was to boom the ball into the end zone. Let the Bears start from the 20. 2 minutes left. We were in control. They could not protect Nutler. They wouldn't have moved the ball. It would have been 10-0. Our ball to start the 2nd half with a chance to put the game away. Instead, Matshay kicks a line drive directly to Hester and he's able to catch the ball with a head of steam. Freakin' pathetic. Purely rubbish. Momentum changed. And in the eyes of the Bears and their crass fans, it was game on. Total crap.
I'm not going to whine. We had 18 penalties. Most were blatantly legit. But, I do have a couple of questions. On Nintendo Nick's personal foul call, did Forte ever hit the ground? I didn't think so. Since when does an awful pass - that was mostly uncatchable - warrant a pass interference to decide a hotly contested Division game? News to me. And if the Tauscher penalty was a holding call, wasn't Derrick Martin held on Hester's punt return for a TD? Both looked similar to me.
I understand that there are "Jordan Rules" for officials. You get calls if you've reached a certain stature. It just happens. It'll always happen. But, my question is when do you reach this stature? Aaron Rodgers continually gets hit in the head by defenders. Rarely does he get the call. Early in the game, he got drilled in the back of the head while he was lying on the ground. No call. Why? Where's the justification?
Sure, Tauscher & Clifton had their troubles on MNF. How can you blame them? When our best RB is John Kuhn, we're basically telling Julius Peppers to pin his ears back and rush the QB every single play. That's an unfavorable scenario for any OT. Before we're too hard on our tackles, lets have a running game. Coming into the season, over the last 40 games, Ryan Grant was among the league leaders in rushing. This OL can be an effective running unit. But, we need a RB.
Coming into the season, we had the luxury of keeping 4 TE's & 3 FB's. Now? Not so much. We need a RB that can hit the hole with a burst. Frankly, I don't know who that guy is. But, I also had little to no idea who BenJarvus Green-Ellis & Danny Woodhead were & last week they combined for 140 yards & 2 TD's on only 19 carries for the New England Patriots. I've never played football, but I've talked to a lot of people who have suggested that the RB is the easiest position on an offense to learn on the fly. We need a solution. Now! In '96, immediately after our loss to the Cowboys on MNF, Ron Wolf had Andre "Bad Moon" Rison on our roster. I wish Thompson would make a similar move with someone unless we see that Dmitri Nance is fit for the position THIS WEEK!
As it turns out, the challenge was a boneheaded decision. According to some media outlets, McCarthy was firmly instructed by his staff in the booth to challenge the play.
Finally, as for the last two minutes and whether or not we should have let the Bears score, I point to a couple of things. First, we all remember 1997. We invented this "we'll let you score so we get time on the clock" to go down and try to tie it philosophy. We all know how that worked out. Generally speaking, I'm in favor of maintaining this philosophy. But, in Week 3 of the season, when we're still establishing the mentality of the 2010 NFL Season, I'm not surrendering. I'm not throwing up the white flag. I'm asking the Claymaker or Sir Charles to make a play. To force a fumble. To go for the strip. We battled too hard on defense to give up with less than 2 minutes to play. It's a mentality. Also, this past Sunday, we saw the Raiders & Saints lose games because of missed short FG's. Any way, I'm fine with McCarthy's decision to play defense.
Some observations:
* Good effort Frank "Z-Man" Zombo. We need to find a pass rusher opposite Clawledge at OLB. While Clay has shown that he hasn't needed training camp, Brad Jones has played as though it's a necessity. Granted, he's still battling injury & he didn't play Monday Night, Jones has been non-existent. Great to see the Z-Man hit Nutler for a sack. Also, I'm not going to blame him for the 15-yard roughing the passer on the Barnett pick. Zombo made a beautiful spin move. Next time, though, rook, lower your head.
* Cullen Jenkins continues to be unblockable. LOCK HIM UP!!!
* A really impressive performance by T-Mon. LOCK HIM UP!!!
* If we give Aaron Rodgers a running game, I will trust him to win any game. Against any team. Anywhere.
* In the words of my wife, A*, "I heart our defense."
* J-MIKE! YOTTO! LOCK HIM UP!!!
* I'm anxious for Mike Neal to get healthy! He'll add another physical dimension to our DL & will further the dominance of our pass rush.
* AQ81 must catch that pass. Totally disappointing.
* Watching B-Jack as a 1st down RB is nearly disgusting.
* Chillar has to get his head turned around. He's on the team due to his strength of covering TE's. He's got to learn to see the ball. Unacceptable.
* Nintendo Nick, catch the ball!
* Wish that Bulaga could have held the point of attack on the FG. Hope that's not a sign of things to come. Bummer to watch. Couldn't believe Sitton got ran over as well on the play.
* BJ "Jazz Hands" Raji can play on my team any day.
* After three weeks, we have 13 sacks & 4 turnovers. I still believe that the turnovers are coming. In bunches. We're too active defensively for them not to occur.
This week the Lions come to Lambeau where they haven't won since 1991. Expect that streak to continue. Though the Lions have improved. They'll rush the passer. The front 4 can flat out pressure the QB. Vanden Bosch, Corey Williams, Suh & Cliff Avril make up an above average pass rushing DL. Avril was great against Minnesota. And not only do all 4 want to get to the QB, but all 4 want to knock the ball loose as well.
At LB, Julian Peterson is a play maker. Zach Follett is a guy that I wanted the Packers to draft badly. He missed the Minnesota game after a 6-tackle performance in Week 2. I've heard no word as to his status for this week. DeAndre Levy was slow in coverage at WI. He'll be a target of our offense this week as well.
In the secondary, other than Louis Delmas, the Lions do not have anyone that impresses me. Houston, Smith & Wade can all be had. While Smith was a terrific playmaker in college, he's too small for the NFL. We'll run by him & throw over him this weekend. Randy Phillips wasn't making plays for the []_[] last year in college. And I don't expect him to be making plays for the Lions this weekend either.
Luckily for the Packers, we won't have to face Matthew Stafford. Though Shaun Hill is a decent back-up QB, we'll bury him. Also, Jahvid Best may not play due to injury. Same with Nate Burleson. So, expect the Lions to see a lot of Calvin Johnson & two TE sets with Brandon Pettigrew & Tony Scheffler as the main targets. Kevin Smith & Maurice Morris do not scare me if Best is unable to go.
Lambeau Field, are you ready? Let's make some NOISE!!!!!!!!!

Once again, T-Mon shuts down Calvin Johnson. My brother, Chad, & I sat in the stands in 2007 as the Packers hosted the Lions. We thought it was T-Mon's coming out party. He was a total athlete. * After three weeks, we have 13 sacks & 4 turnovers. I still believe that the turnovers are coming. In bunches. We're too active defensively for them not to occur.
This week the Lions come to Lambeau where they haven't won since 1991. Expect that streak to continue. Though the Lions have improved. They'll rush the passer. The front 4 can flat out pressure the QB. Vanden Bosch, Corey Williams, Suh & Cliff Avril make up an above average pass rushing DL. Avril was great against Minnesota. And not only do all 4 want to get to the QB, but all 4 want to knock the ball loose as well.
At LB, Julian Peterson is a play maker. Zach Follett is a guy that I wanted the Packers to draft badly. He missed the Minnesota game after a 6-tackle performance in Week 2. I've heard no word as to his status for this week. DeAndre Levy was slow in coverage at WI. He'll be a target of our offense this week as well.
In the secondary, other than Louis Delmas, the Lions do not have anyone that impresses me. Houston, Smith & Wade can all be had. While Smith was a terrific playmaker in college, he's too small for the NFL. We'll run by him & throw over him this weekend. Randy Phillips wasn't making plays for the []_[] last year in college. And I don't expect him to be making plays for the Lions this weekend either.
Luckily for the Packers, we won't have to face Matthew Stafford. Though Shaun Hill is a decent back-up QB, we'll bury him. Also, Jahvid Best may not play due to injury. Same with Nate Burleson. So, expect the Lions to see a lot of Calvin Johnson & two TE sets with Brandon Pettigrew & Tony Scheffler as the main targets. Kevin Smith & Maurice Morris do not scare me if Best is unable to go.

Once again, T-Mon shuts down Calvin Johnson. My brother, Chad, & I sat in the stands in 2007 as the Packers hosted the Lions. We thought it was T-Mon's coming out party. He was a total athlete. A joy to watch. We were right. T-Mon is a proud Packer. I'm happy to have him. Again, lock him up. T-Mon picks off a pass this week.

My Take -> Week 3
Greetings, G-Force.
A successful pilgrimage to the American sports Holy Land. The first time my good mate & I were in attendance in which the Packers came away with a victory. Cheers, Vargas.
2-0! Living life. Not playing our best football. It offers hope for a bright future.
First, we need to re-establish a home-field advantage. NOW! I know we've been winning as of late at Lambeau, but in order to capture the Holmgren home-field magic of the '90's, it must start with US! Yes, you & me. Those in the stands provide the energy. Players feed off that energy. Especially the defense. The traditions are passed down from the fans. We pass down the legacies. We have the responsibility of living up to the expectations. Never taking a week off. Regardless of the opponent, On 3rd down, get off your ass. Get on your feet. Or stay home. Encourage those around you to do the same. We can help the defense get off the field & when the defense forces a punt, give them the applause they deserve! The Faithful must be enthusiastically explosive at all times. This is what makes both Lambeau Field & the Green Bay Packers unique. As fans, we must carry the weight! From here on out, get the job done. This team needs us.
In order to become Super, a team needs to deal with obstacles. At some point, there has to be controversy. There must be unsettling moments that build the teams character. Often, these moments force others to propel their game to the next level. This team has seen plenty. Think the Drama Viqueen. Johnny Jolly. Ras Al. Ras-A-tari. Life without Ryan Grant. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. In 1996, in many ways, Andre Rison & Bruce Wilkerson saved the season. Now, we need a similar savior in 2010. Or the season won't end in Super form. We need a solution at RB. Someone must answer the bell.
The sky is the limit for this team. Take away the quarter in which Michael Vick was a supernatural & this team has outscored the opposition 61-17. And, frankly, we haven't played that well. If we peak, we can dominate. No doubt.
In case you haven't noticed, Clay Matthews III is a beast. A predator. A maniacal animal. Even on the sideline, you can't contain him. He sets the pace for the Defense everytime we step out on the field. He's ALWAYS the 1st one to the huddle. Our unquestioned leader.
Congrats to Morgan "Heritage" Burnett & Brandon Chillar for their 1st picks. Again, great to see Nintendo Nick hungry to play the role of mentor for Burnett. When Burnett go the pick, Collins was looking to celebrate. Pimpin' together. Good ol' boys just being boys! And after the play, they shared a Gatorade with one another & Collins wanted to know ALL details. As if he were a proud big brother. They're mates. T-Mon & Shields were simling onlookers. Sir Charles came over to show small appreciation & acknowledgement. Nonetheless, the reigning Defensive MVP's small pat on the back was certainly noticed by Burnett. Guaranteed. His smile was endless post Woodson's gesture. But, it was Collins who cherished the moment most. Chemistry exists!
A couple other small observations:
In the 40/40 watch, the Packers notched 4 more sacks & forced 2 more turnovers giving us 10 sacks & 3 turnovers after two games. The turnovers are going to come in bunches. Trust it.
I enjoy Nick Barnett's new mouthguard.
YOTTO! Send Finley to Hawaii! He's lethal coming across the middle on the crossing route.
After 2 games, the stats for Rodgers reads 443 passing yards, 4 TD's 2 INT, 94.0 passer rating. And I'd argue that he hasn't played well. Amazing to consider.
Bulaga filled in admirably. Happy that his 1st NFL action is behind him. He's ready for contact. I get the feeling that - at this stage - he might be a better run blocker than a pass protector. Thou Buffalo didn't show much of anything.
Sam Shields with the tackle over the middle to prevent the 1st down & get us off the field on 3rd down! Well played, rook!

Props to Crabtree, Martin & Donald Lee for solid special teams play. Swain has to make a tackle on kickoff coverage. He's in position. Has to finish the play!

Great camaraderie on the sidelines. Team unity is strong. Units sticking together. Studying together. Growin together. Learning together. Defining team.
The Packers travel to Lambeau South this weekend. Excitingly, perched atop the NFC North standings, you'll find the Packers equal with the hated Chicago Bears. For those of you that know me, there are very few things in life that I hate. For me, at the top of the hatred list is the Chicago Bears. Add Monday Night Football to the equation coupled with the notion that sole possession of 1st place is on the line & man, I'm stoked for this prime time battle.
I've seen every play of both Bears games twice. And it's hurts for me to admit, but there's reason for optimism in Windy City. True, they were fortunate to steal the Lions game, but if you look at the individual performances of many of their players, there are some positives around the hated rivals. Urlacher looks like he's back in 2006. So does Briggs. Same with Tillman. Forte looks like he's back to his 2008 form. All are making plays. Olsen, Hester & Knox have all displayed that they are capable whether it's on offense or special teams. They bring speed to the table.
And then there is Ray Nutler. In 55 career games, Nutler has 64 interceptions. Yet, this year, Nutler has a passer rating of 121. He's thrown 5 TD's compared to 1 interception. Suddenly, he hasn't been throwing into traffic (as much) & he's also making quick decisions. Nutler also showed the ability to escape the rush against the Cowboys. Dallas came with much pressure, yet Nutler was elusive enough to avoid punishment.
It's not rocket science, but this game will be won at the line of scrimmage. Both teams will try to spread each other out. Both teams will take shots down the field. The Packers will look towards the middle of the field. The Bears will look to test us down the sidelines. Look for them to try & get Hester or Knox lined up against Woodson & then try to take advantage of the speed advantage. I'm shocked that teams haven't targeted Shields. Might be Martz's game plan. Martz will try to also find Olsen, Forte & Chester Taylor on short routes when they are in one-on-one coverage against our LB's.
If Nutler holds onto the ball, the Packers DL will dominate the Bears vulnerable OL. The Bears OL can be beaten. Change that, the Bears OL WILL be beaten. Especially if Mike Neal is added to the mix. In fact, I'm so confident that we'll win those match-ups that largely, I'd only rush 4 men. Occasionally, I'd rush Sir Charles or Barnett. But, for the most part, I think we'll win individual match-ups with them. The Bears OL is weak on the edges. And when we do win those battles, it'll force Nutler to make quick decisions. We know how that story goes. Especially when the secondary is polluted with defenders.
This is a big game for Nick Barnett. We need him to play well. His responsibility will be to take away Nutler's bail out option. He'll have opportunities to make plays. Carpe Diem, Nick.
The Bears pass defense showed weaknesses between the LB's & the Safeties. We can win the middle of the field. We can also beat Moore & Bowman. Regardless of Moore's 2 picks last week. He can be had. Watch for Tillman to try for the strip. Also, I'm wondering if Tommie Harris is done.
Early in the game, the Bears rise to the occasion. A motivated crowd inspires goodness to the Bears defense. They get off the field. Find decent field position. The Bears strike first. Taylor, Forte, Hester & Olsen are all involved.
The Packers offense responds with a nice drive. Sitton pushes Tommie Harris 5 yards deep. Changing momentum. It's Nance grabbing carries & pushing for 1st downs. It's Kuhn pounding it at the gut for 3 yards. Play action to J-Mike over the middle. YOTTO! It's B-Jack slipping forward for 3 yards. The Bears hold to 3. But, the tone is set & the LB's have to creep forward. In fact, it's mandatory for the Packers to force the Bears LB to move towards the line of scrimmage early in this game. We can't let them rush 4.

On & On & ON!!! The pass protection comes after Ray Nutler. CM3 from the blindside! Connects with Nutler. Driving his shoulder into the turf. Forcing the fumble. The big turnover the Packers needed!

Back & forth, the game goes. Neither team able to slip away. Then, T-Mon makes the BIG play. Stepping in front of a Nutler pass.
It'll be a dog fight. Notch another victory for the good guys from Titletown. Once again, the Packers walk into Lambeau South & grab success.

My Take - > Week 2
Greetings, G-Force.
Tomorrow, I make the splendid trek from the sunny beaches of South Beach in Miami to mecca of American sports, Titletown. Words can't describe the level of my enthusiasm.
We enter the home opener at 1-0. Fresh off a road victory against a legitimate NFC opponent. At a place where we had not won in nearly 50 years. Not since Lombardi.
Don't let the Michael Vick led comeback distract from just how impressive it was to win in Week 1 at Philly. By the way, Vick made plays the were super human. He is the ONLY player in the game that could have made a handful of those plays.
But, consider this: our MVP candidate QB played what was arguably one of the top-5 worst games of his 3 year starting career. We lost our 1200 yard RB. And we won the game. In a hostile environment.
Also, the statement of this team came when we stopped the Eagles on 4th & 1. Strangely, I was CONFIDENT that the Packers would get the stop. Not since Reggie retired from the Packers in 1998 did I feel that way. Seriously. The 2010 Packers defense is loaded with players that can make plays. We'll give up yards. We'll give up points. We'll give up plays. But, we'll also make game changing plays. Plenty of them.
Small observations:
* Massive props to Josh Sitton. Running B-Jack & Kuhn behind Sitton generated a TD. Dominant display by Sitton. Great to see.
* As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I'm going to track the Packers defensive run to the 40/40 club. In Week 1, we had 5 sacks & 1 turnover. The turnovers are coming.
* The Claymaker for Defensive MVP. Go get it, Clay.
* Sir Charles, the reigning Defensive MVP, playing like, well, Charles Woodson.
* T-Mon stepping up to the occasion. Playing brilliantly.
* BJ "Jazz Hands" Raji was the real deal.
* Cullen Jenkins is a gamer.
* Congrats to Double-D for #50. You the man, Donald!
* Big Ups to Mason Crosby! To Jordy Nelson as well for his Kick Return abilities. I thought Crabtree & Derrick Martin did a great job holding blocks to help spring him.
* Our Safeties must tackle better. Especially in the open field.
* Sam Shields was exposed late in the game. It's on video tape. That's scary. After the game, Maclin made a comment that he was surprised that he was so wide open. Yikes. But, no worries, rook. Gotta stay strong. Liked the way you went for the ball. As a side note, on Monday morning on the Joe Rose show in Miami, 560 AM radio, two different callers were absolutely shocked that he's our nickel back.
* Dear Ryan Grant, get well, mate. Liked that you hopped off the field. No cart. Says a lot about your character. You'll get knocked down. But, you'll fight thru this. You'll come back as a better man, if that's possible. I'm confident of that.
* Props to AK-74, the future Green Bay Packer HOF'er. You're in our hearts forever. Congrats on your Week 1 production. 1.5 sacks for the Jags. I'll be following you all year. Cheers, AK-74.
The injuries can't be ignored. Grant's injury does not end any chance of a Super Bowl. But, we need to improve from where we were in Week 1. With that being said, Mike McCarthy has been here before. Think back to 2007. You can win in the NFL with a top-tier passing attack. Especially in September & October. In 2007, during the months of September & October, the Packers went 6-1. In the wins, the Packers averaged less than 65 yards rushing per game. Spread 'em out. Short 3 step drops mixed in with Shotgun formations. Read the blitz. Find WR's in space. Let your playmakers make plays. Hopefully, over the next 6 weeks, we can figure out who will be our mudder. For when the weather turns, we better be ready to pound away with the running game.
The answer might be B-Jack. I doubt it. Highly. But, I'm not going to fully rule it out. He's had some decent performances in bad weather contests. I've been critical of him in the past. I'm not sold that he's a full time back. He lacks another gear. But, for now, if we can get 65-75 yards from B-Jack & 20-30 yards from Kuhn, we'll be OK over the next 5 weeks.
Coming into the season, I felt that the Packers needed to start at least 5-1. We're well positioned. The schedule stiffens from Week 7-16 before we close with the lowly Bears. Heading into our Week 7 contest with Minnesota, I'd like to have our run game figured out.
I watch a lot of football. Too much, if that's possible. I can't tell you anything about Dimitri Nance. I saw games that he played in. His name doesn't register. For what that's worth. Nonetheless, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. In 2005, Ted Thompson pulled Samkon Gado out of a hat. Gado received significant carries in 5 games. In those games, he averaged 104.4 yards per game. Gado was a good fit for Mike Sherman's system. In 2007, Thompson played genie once again in the form of Ryan Grant. Is Nance the 2010 version? Or is it James Starks? We've been waiting to see him. He could hold the key to the Packers success in 2010.
Or maybe the answer is Marshawn Lynch...
This week the Buffalo Bills come to town. The Bills have one of the worst OL's in football. Trent Edwards is in the bottom tier of QB's in this league. At WR, they have WI product Lee Evans & Steve Johnson at WR. I'll give you $10 if you can name where Steve Johnson went to college. When I was watching the Dolphins/Bills game in Week 1, I literally had to look him up. No worries, Johnson's from Kentucky & he contributed 1 catch for 3 yards against the vulnerable, young Dolphins secondary. Roscoe Parrish has been a disappointment and he's been demoted to the #3 WR. The Bills are loaded at RB with CJ Spiller, Fred Jackson, and Marshawn Lynch. Lynch should just stay in Green Bay after the game.
Defensively, the Bills have an interesting mix of draft picks & cast-offs. Jairus Byrd, Donte Whitner, Terrence McGee, and Drayton Florence present a defensive backfield that has playmaking capabilities. At ILB, Paul Posluszny is a solid football player. Marcus Stroud, Dwan Edwards, and Kyle Williams make up an interesting DL for a 3-4 yet none of them are going to change a game. Chris Kelsay & Reggie Torbor are not sack masters. Andra Davis is on his 3rd team in 3 years.
Show up. Play your game. And this one is a walk in the park.
Predictably, the Packers come out in 5 WR/TE sets. In Week 1, Rodgers connected with only 6 receivers. In Week 2, he finds 8 different options. He also throws 3 TD's. And he racks up 300 yards. This one will be a laugher. A celebration.
Defensively, I hope we play with the same passion as we did last week. Don't let up. Let's come after Edwards! If we do, we'll make big plays. We'll force at least 2 turnovers. We'll get 2 more sacks. Importantly, we'll also force a number of 3 & outs.
Look for the Bills to try and use last weeks film to their advantage. It wouldn't shock me to see the wildcat this weekend. Jackson taking snaps from center. Flanked by Spiller & Lynch. All three of them have the capability to beat you. All are game breakers. If they get blocking, they could be dangerous. Buffalo has to find a way to slow down our offense. The only way they'll be able to do that is by keeping our offense off the field. Trickery is the only way they'll have success running the ball. Though it wouldn't shock me if Spiller got loose one time.
Look for the Bills to also try to grab small yardage by dumping the ball off to Fred Jackson. He'll be active. They'll try to attack Shields with Lee Evans. Deep down the sideline on a double move.
But, this one is all about Green Bay. We're on a mission. One week at a time. And, this week, our offense has 7 scores in them this week.

Tomorrow, I make the splendid trek from the sunny beaches of South Beach in Miami to mecca of American sports, Titletown. Words can't describe the level of my enthusiasm.
We enter the home opener at 1-0. Fresh off a road victory against a legitimate NFC opponent. At a place where we had not won in nearly 50 years. Not since Lombardi.
Don't let the Michael Vick led comeback distract from just how impressive it was to win in Week 1 at Philly. By the way, Vick made plays the were super human. He is the ONLY player in the game that could have made a handful of those plays.
But, consider this: our MVP candidate QB played what was arguably one of the top-5 worst games of his 3 year starting career. We lost our 1200 yard RB. And we won the game. In a hostile environment.
Also, the statement of this team came when we stopped the Eagles on 4th & 1. Strangely, I was CONFIDENT that the Packers would get the stop. Not since Reggie retired from the Packers in 1998 did I feel that way. Seriously. The 2010 Packers defense is loaded with players that can make plays. We'll give up yards. We'll give up points. We'll give up plays. But, we'll also make game changing plays. Plenty of them.
Small observations:
* Massive props to Josh Sitton. Running B-Jack & Kuhn behind Sitton generated a TD. Dominant display by Sitton. Great to see.
* As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I'm going to track the Packers defensive run to the 40/40 club. In Week 1, we had 5 sacks & 1 turnover. The turnovers are coming.
* The Claymaker for Defensive MVP. Go get it, Clay.
* Sir Charles, the reigning Defensive MVP, playing like, well, Charles Woodson.
* T-Mon stepping up to the occasion. Playing brilliantly.
* BJ "Jazz Hands" Raji was the real deal.
* Cullen Jenkins is a gamer.
* Congrats to Double-D for #50. You the man, Donald!
* Big Ups to Mason Crosby! To Jordy Nelson as well for his Kick Return abilities. I thought Crabtree & Derrick Martin did a great job holding blocks to help spring him.
* Our Safeties must tackle better. Especially in the open field.
* Sam Shields was exposed late in the game. It's on video tape. That's scary. After the game, Maclin made a comment that he was surprised that he was so wide open. Yikes. But, no worries, rook. Gotta stay strong. Liked the way you went for the ball. As a side note, on Monday morning on the Joe Rose show in Miami, 560 AM radio, two different callers were absolutely shocked that he's our nickel back.
* Dear Ryan Grant, get well, mate. Liked that you hopped off the field. No cart. Says a lot about your character. You'll get knocked down. But, you'll fight thru this. You'll come back as a better man, if that's possible. I'm confident of that.
* Props to AK-74, the future Green Bay Packer HOF'er. You're in our hearts forever. Congrats on your Week 1 production. 1.5 sacks for the Jags. I'll be following you all year. Cheers, AK-74.
The injuries can't be ignored. Grant's injury does not end any chance of a Super Bowl. But, we need to improve from where we were in Week 1. With that being said, Mike McCarthy has been here before. Think back to 2007. You can win in the NFL with a top-tier passing attack. Especially in September & October. In 2007, during the months of September & October, the Packers went 6-1. In the wins, the Packers averaged less than 65 yards rushing per game. Spread 'em out. Short 3 step drops mixed in with Shotgun formations. Read the blitz. Find WR's in space. Let your playmakers make plays. Hopefully, over the next 6 weeks, we can figure out who will be our mudder. For when the weather turns, we better be ready to pound away with the running game.

My Take -> Week 1
Greetings, G-Force.
The season has arrived. Finally. In the progression of a young QB's career, this year is supposed to be the next step. Anything other than a year that includes at least one playoff victory would be a disappointment. If we win 11 regular season games, we'll win the Division. Most are predicting the Packers to make it to the Super Bowl. I'm picking the Packers to finish 11-5. Win the Division. Hopefully, that includes a 1st round bye. From there, let's play. But, in order to get there, we have to take it one game at a time. And it all starts with the Eagles at Philadelphia.
Philadelphia has been a house of horrors for the Packers franchise. In recent history, the City of Brotherly Love has not been so friendly to the Green & Gold. There has been evil demons that have haunted our proud franchise when we've entered the land of the cheese steak. Reggie White tossing Tony Mandarich around like a rag doll. Longwell missing a short FG in '97. 4th & 26. Mike McMahon leading a team to victory. The end of Favre's TD streak. For whatever reason, games at Philly have not been kind. This week - things will be different.
If Philly wins 8 games this year, it'd be a successful season. Playing with a young, inexperienced QB often leads to a less than stellar season. I compare the '10 Eagles to the '08 Packers. Many close games. Lots of losses. For obvious reasons, the careers of Aaron Rodgers & Kevin Kolb will be compared forever. Throw in the fact that Kolb wears #4 and the story becomes more weird.
The Packers must mix it up along the DL and come with a variety of blitzes to confuse Kolb early in the contest. Philly has an unsettling OL. They lack chemistry. We need to pressure them from the outside to contain Kolb, who has a strong ability to extend plays with his legs. If we let him escape, he'll make plays.
Clay Matthews coming from the left side should have success against the Winston Justice, Reggie Wells combination. Wells joined the Eagles less than a week ago. He's ripe for the picking. Expect BJ Raji & Mike Neal to push him around. Additionally, both LeSean McCoy & Mike Bell have limited blitz pick-up experience. It's time to pin our ears back & attack the Kolb.
The Eagles present a tough opponent for the Packers in Week 1. Their strengths seem to be the Packers weakness. The Eagles are loaded at WR. We lack depth at DB. Plus, film on Kolb is limited, so he'll be tough to prepare for.
Defensively for the Eagles, Trent Cole & Brandon Graham will provide stiff challenges for Clifton & Tauscher. Surprisingly, I believe that the Ealges LB's can be had. This might be the worst Eagles LB core that I can remember. Akeem Jordan, Stewart Bradley & the undersized Ernie Sims. Not what you call playmakers. J-Mike, get ready to blow up, kid. YOTTO, you'll be!
On the outside, the Eagles have two strong starters in Ellis Hobbs & Asante Samuel. But they lack depth & experience. At safety, while I like Nate Allen, he's a rookie & he can be confused. Spread 'em out. Let's play.
The Packers come out with 3 WR's & J-Mike. B-Jack sees additional playing time so that he can help on the blitz pick-up. Literally, he's a 6th blocker. A-Rodge uses J-Mike early. He uses him often. TD for the YOTTO! TGIF!

It's Driver on a crossing route. Absorbing the hit. Nelson on a puma route. Jones on a deep fly down the right side of the field. The lead grows to double digits.
The Eagles have weapons. Jackson, Maclin, Avant & Celek will ALL make plays. Jackson gets deep down the middle of the field.
In the 2nd half, the Packers begin to lean on Philly's front 4. Grant finds yardage running to the right. We dominate the line of scrimmage. And then, it's play action. Rodgers to Finley.
If you're a gambling man, bet the over.
Packers 37. Eagles 31.

My Take -> Preseason Week 4
Greetings, G-Force.
There is reason for enthusiasm. While it's only the pre-season, the Packers have played with animation over the last 5 quarters. Offensively, we are on a mission. Rodgers is playing at a ridiculously high level. He's using his check-downs. Finding the backs. The safety valves are allowing the big plays down the field as defenses are having to respect both the underneath routes and the middle of the field due to J-Mike's stardom. Thus, our WR's are finding 1 v 1 opportunities. And Rodgers is utilizing the field to spread the ball. On the epic 2-minute drive to close the 1st half, Rodgers connected with 5 different receivers. Sublime.
Rodgers' high command of the offense was displayed on the audible in which he connected with J-Mike for a TD. Phenomenal. His toughness was elite. Standing in the pocket. Taking the hit. Absorbing the pain. 7 points. Beautiful.
As we yearn for health on the defensive side of the ball, the defense made a big statement as it rebounded from a putrid 1st Quarter. We forced turnovers. We applied pressure. While we only sacked Manning once, he was hurried on a number of occasions. The performance reminded me of the 2009 New Orleans Saints. An offense that is nearly impossible to defend only requires a defense that will alter the tide of the game with a crucial turnover. Judging from what we've seen thus far, the Packers defense will give up points. We'll give up yards in abundance. But, that same defense has a knack for making the game changing play.
This defense looks like a team that could force 40 turnovers and notch 40 sacks. We'll call it the "40-40" club. And we'll track it all year. In fact, this might be a requirement to position ourselves for a Super season. Since our special teams is a work in progress, we must depend on our defense to occasionally switch the field. While it would be an "amazing" stat if the Packers had 4 DB's with 5 picks each, it would not "amaze" me. In fact, I'm half-expecting Woodson, T-Mon, Nintendo Nick & Morgan Burnett to pick off 5 passes each.
Speaking of Morgan Burnett, he's the Pimp with the Limp! Loved watching him bounce after the pick. I was also stoked to see Nintendo Nick relishing the moment with Burnett. As Burnett was bouncing, Collins was a leader in celebration right next to him. I like the flavor. I wished Burnett would have had the pick on the deep ball as well, but good to see him in position.
J-Mike looks prime for a 100-catch, 1,000 yard season. He's not only claiming his nickname as TGIF, but he's also shouting that YOTTO is his MOJO. While Greg Bedard is reporting that YOTTO means "Year of the Take Over", the urban dictionary claims that YOTTO is "one who is great..has all power and huge cock. Is almost like god except he walks the earth. Is gorgeous and has sex-appeal. There can be only one Yotto. All others bow to him for Yotto is the greatest." Either way, J-Mike, whatever gets you thru the night...it's alright!
Unless the Packers are able to add a #3 CB via trade over the next week, Sam Shields has earned the right to be our nickel corner in Week 1. Since Ras Al can't play, it wouldn't shock me if Shields is the 5th DB at Philly. In fact, he should be. Props to Shields for proving me wrong thus far. He's a lock for this team & he's been the most pleasant surprise of camp. Well done, Sam. Keep it up, mate.
Frank Zombo has guaranteed himself a spot on this team as well. High intensity. Great motor. Still slow off the ball, but his hustle will find him around the ball. He also plays intelligently. Drops in coverage decently. I've yet to see him tracking a TE down the seam, but when he's dropped inside 10 yards, he's done well.
Mike Neal can play in this league. The artist known as "Bam-Bam" has shown growth & understanding of the defense. He spreads his way down the line of scrimmage like wild fire. He'll be a terrific compliment to Cullen Jenkins. As for Jenkins, we you healthy. NOW! Get well, bro. You're a vital component to our success. On 3rd down, I'd like to see Jenkins, Neal, CM3, & Zombo come after the QB. I'd expect pressure.
Massive props to Chery! Curious to see what he does this week. He'll get an opportunity to repeat the deed. If it happens, it'll earn him an improbable roster spot. I am interested in his kick-off return ability.
Looks like we have solid developmental depth of ILB with Francois, Simpkins, and the little we've seen of Alex Joseph. It'll be an interesting practice squad battle this weekend.
B-Jack continues to master the blitz pick-up.
Andrew Quarless! Drew-Q! Go up & get it, Drew-Q! Then, get up in the stands, kid! Flex those muscles. Lets party. Become a secret weapon. The Drew-Q/J-Mike combo could revolutionize the NFL.
It's too bad Lumpkin can't stay healthy as he can do things with the ball that none of our other backs offer. I like his style. Not sure if we can keep him as we've learned this lesson before with DeShawn Wynn. Since Starks goes to the PUP list, it appears we'll look at Lumpkin on an additional 6-week trial basis.
Said it before. Sayin' it again. I am really impressed with the continued growth of Marshal Newhouse. Looks like he could be a player in this league.
I fear that our DL depth is a weakness. We might only have 4 players who can play. Jenkins, Neal, Raji, Pickett. Might be wise to trade for an additional DL.
Heavy credit to Colledge for shutting his mouth. Taking the right approach. Winning the starting LG job. Moreover, cheers to Bulaga for the way he conducted himself after it was announced that Colledge had won the starting job.

I hope Nick Barnett hasn't lost a step. He seems a bit hobbled.
Tom Crabtree wasn't on the same page as A-Rodge on the crossing route in the 2nd Quarter. I'm sure A-Rodge wasn't happy when Crabtree stopped his route. While Crabtree has not shown a lot catching the ball in the preseason, he has impressed with his blocking. It was great to see him throwing Jerry Hughes around like a rag-doll. No doubt that Crabtree can block.
Finally, BIG UPS to Ted Thompson! The man has endured fierce scrutiny. Instead of crumbling, he's rising to the top. From what I've seen this preseason, I believe Bulaga, Neal, Burnett, Newhouse & Quarless all have futures with this franchise. In some capacity, each looks capable of having a positive impact. Furthermore, I felt the Indy game was Wilson's best game thus far. And I'm jonesin' to see James Starks!

This week the Packers travel to Arrowhead to take on the Chiefs in the "Stay Healthy" game of the preseason. If you are a starter, you get one series this week. ONE. Make it count.
It's Aaron Rodgers, the Surgeon, finding 4 different receivers. Driver, Jones & Nelson all grab balls for 1st downs. The Surgeon finds TGIF for the TD.
Playing without Sir Charles, Ras AL, Barnett, Brad Jones, CM3 & Cullen Jenkins, the defense gets the stop as Neal squirms thru & forces a hurried 3rd down throw by Matt Cassel.
Then the evaluation begins. Coming off his best performance in Green & Gold, Matt Flynn gets his change. Using West, Williams, Dillon, Chery, and Swain as his weapons, Flynn gets after it. These 5 WR's are all competing for the final WR spot. Flynn finds confidence in the underneath routes. I'm begging for West to get a glowing chance. I'm confident he'll shine.
Lumpkin grabs 20 carries. Playing to ensure a roster spot, Lumpkin spins, lowers his shoulder & finds additional yardage. Eventually, he finds the end zone.
Flynn finds Donald Lee for a potentially farewell TD. Lee, a consummate pro, deserves this TD. Regardless of what happens to his Packers fate over the next week.
The Packers defense continues to give up yards. Points as well. But, in true fashion, we find turnovers. Zombo gets to the QB. Shields grabs his 3rd pick of the preseason.

There is reason for enthusiasm. While it's only the pre-season, the Packers have played with animation over the last 5 quarters. Offensively, we are on a mission. Rodgers is playing at a ridiculously high level. He's using his check-downs. Finding the backs. The safety valves are allowing the big plays down the field as defenses are having to respect both the underneath routes and the middle of the field due to J-Mike's stardom. Thus, our WR's are finding 1 v 1 opportunities. And Rodgers is utilizing the field to spread the ball. On the epic 2-minute drive to close the 1st half, Rodgers connected with 5 different receivers. Sublime.
Rodgers' high command of the offense was displayed on the audible in which he connected with J-Mike for a TD. Phenomenal. His toughness was elite. Standing in the pocket. Taking the hit. Absorbing the pain. 7 points. Beautiful.
As we yearn for health on the defensive side of the ball, the defense made a big statement as it rebounded from a putrid 1st Quarter. We forced turnovers. We applied pressure. While we only sacked Manning once, he was hurried on a number of occasions. The performance reminded me of the 2009 New Orleans Saints. An offense that is nearly impossible to defend only requires a defense that will alter the tide of the game with a crucial turnover. Judging from what we've seen thus far, the Packers defense will give up points. We'll give up yards in abundance. But, that same defense has a knack for making the game changing play.
This defense looks like a team that could force 40 turnovers and notch 40 sacks. We'll call it the "40-40" club. And we'll track it all year. In fact, this might be a requirement to position ourselves for a Super season. Since our special teams is a work in progress, we must depend on our defense to occasionally switch the field. While it would be an "amazing" stat if the Packers had 4 DB's with 5 picks each, it would not "amaze" me. In fact, I'm half-expecting Woodson, T-Mon, Nintendo Nick & Morgan Burnett to pick off 5 passes each.
Speaking of Morgan Burnett, he's the Pimp with the Limp! Loved watching him bounce after the pick. I was also stoked to see Nintendo Nick relishing the moment with Burnett. As Burnett was bouncing, Collins was a leader in celebration right next to him. I like the flavor. I wished Burnett would have had the pick on the deep ball as well, but good to see him in position.
J-Mike looks prime for a 100-catch, 1,000 yard season. He's not only claiming his nickname as TGIF, but he's also shouting that YOTTO is his MOJO. While Greg Bedard is reporting that YOTTO means "Year of the Take Over", the urban dictionary claims that YOTTO is "one who is great..has all power and huge cock. Is almost like god except he walks the earth. Is gorgeous and has sex-appeal. There can be only one Yotto. All others bow to him for Yotto is the greatest." Either way, J-Mike, whatever gets you thru the night...it's alright!
Unless the Packers are able to add a #3 CB via trade over the next week, Sam Shields has earned the right to be our nickel corner in Week 1. Since Ras Al can't play, it wouldn't shock me if Shields is the 5th DB at Philly. In fact, he should be. Props to Shields for proving me wrong thus far. He's a lock for this team & he's been the most pleasant surprise of camp. Well done, Sam. Keep it up, mate.
Frank Zombo has guaranteed himself a spot on this team as well. High intensity. Great motor. Still slow off the ball, but his hustle will find him around the ball. He also plays intelligently. Drops in coverage decently. I've yet to see him tracking a TE down the seam, but when he's dropped inside 10 yards, he's done well.
Mike Neal can play in this league. The artist known as "Bam-Bam" has shown growth & understanding of the defense. He spreads his way down the line of scrimmage like wild fire. He'll be a terrific compliment to Cullen Jenkins. As for Jenkins, we you healthy. NOW! Get well, bro. You're a vital component to our success. On 3rd down, I'd like to see Jenkins, Neal, CM3, & Zombo come after the QB. I'd expect pressure.
Massive props to Chery! Curious to see what he does this week. He'll get an opportunity to repeat the deed. If it happens, it'll earn him an improbable roster spot. I am interested in his kick-off return ability.
Looks like we have solid developmental depth of ILB with Francois, Simpkins, and the little we've seen of Alex Joseph. It'll be an interesting practice squad battle this weekend.
B-Jack continues to master the blitz pick-up.
Andrew Quarless! Drew-Q! Go up & get it, Drew-Q! Then, get up in the stands, kid! Flex those muscles. Lets party. Become a secret weapon. The Drew-Q/J-Mike combo could revolutionize the NFL.
It's too bad Lumpkin can't stay healthy as he can do things with the ball that none of our other backs offer. I like his style. Not sure if we can keep him as we've learned this lesson before with DeShawn Wynn. Since Starks goes to the PUP list, it appears we'll look at Lumpkin on an additional 6-week trial basis.
Said it before. Sayin' it again. I am really impressed with the continued growth of Marshal Newhouse. Looks like he could be a player in this league.
I fear that our DL depth is a weakness. We might only have 4 players who can play. Jenkins, Neal, Raji, Pickett. Might be wise to trade for an additional DL.
Heavy credit to Colledge for shutting his mouth. Taking the right approach. Winning the starting LG job. Moreover, cheers to Bulaga for the way he conducted himself after it was announced that Colledge had won the starting job.
